Karen Burniston Pop it Ups Designer Challenge – Pivot Cards

February 12, 2014

Welcome to our very first Karen Burniston Pop it Ups Designer Challenge.

I’m Karen Burniston and each month I will challenge my Designer Challenge Team to use Pop it Ups dies in some specific way. For our first challenge I gave them an easy one – simply use one of the three Pivot Card Dies to make a card of any style, any theme. Here are the three dies they could choose from:

768---Katie-Label-Pivot-Card---KB 767---Butterfly-Pivot-Card---KB775---Heart-Pivot-Card---KB

Before I send you around the web to see the Designer Challenge Team’s creations, let me share a new project and video from me.

For my Challenge Card, I wanted to show a technique for doubling the height of the Katie Label Pivot Card by  folding your paper first. This gives you a larger pivot area for decorating.

Doublehigh_Katie_Closed

Speaking of decorating, the video will also show how to make the mosaic heart embellishment:

Doublehigh_Katie_Heart

The video also shows how I made the two-tone stamped, framed greeting:

Doublehigh_Katie_Page2

And also the label with the inlaid heart detailing:

Doublehigh_Katie_Label

Because I had used patterned paper for my card, I felt that it needed some backing strips to make it stronger. I used two strips of patterned paper in the back:

Supply List:

As you saw in the video, I also made a simple version of this same card, this time using Glitter Border Stickers to cover all the fold lines.

_DH_Katie_Red_Open

I used the same technique for the mosaic heart embellishment but this time cut the hearts from cardstock and added a glitter dot to each heart. The mosaic heart went onto a larger piece of patterned paper and then I cut the same heart shape using decorative edged scissors. For the front of the card I stamped a heart in silver ink, randomly.

_DH_Katie_Red_Closed

The greeting was another stamp from the set, this time inked in red and stamped on a vertical decorator Katie Labels piece. To highlight the script “love” I used a silver pen and then slightly shadowed with a red pen. I added large Glitter Dots in the center of the printed words LOVE.

_DH_Katie_Red_Details1

I used the Katie Labels again to make the horizontal label, cutting the heart from the label and then filling it with glitter dots.

Ready for a ton of Pivot Card inspiration? Time to hop around the web to the blogs of the eleven talented designers on the Karen Burniston Designer Challenge Team, plus one Guest Designer.

Since I used the Pop it Ups Katie Label Pivot Card die set this month, let’s start with some additional ideas for using that die:

Donna Wright has a lot of clever ideas in this card. You can click over to Donna’s Blog Post to see more photos including how she made the “to” by clever cutting of a Hello die and how she created the music lines (the notes are arranged in the Happy Birthday tune!)

It’s a good thing that Australia is a big place. It’s just big enough to hold Frances Byrne’s stamp collection! She always has the perfect stamps for any card, including this wonderful Bee card. Fabulous color scheme and composition. See more photos and a supply list on Frances’ Blog Post.

Frances_Byrne_Katie_Bee

Helen Cryer always manages to pick the perfect combination of colors and textures for her cards. For this beauty she has combined the Katie Label Pivot Card with the Agatha Edges, Flower Set #3 and Happy Birthday dies. I love how she’s chopped up the Agatha Flourish to embellish the corners. See more photos on Helen’s Blog Post.

Another fantastic card by Helen Cryer. This time she used the Katie Label as a platform for some stamped and colored images. What a cute birthday card for a boy! See photos and supplies on Helen’s Blog Post.

Kelly Booth inspired me to try Copic markers after seeing so many beautifully colored cards on her blog. She is a master with color. Here’s a great example, with cute owl stamps colored to perfection. See more photos and a supply list on Kelly’s Blog Post.

Raquel Mason blew me away with her project this month and you really must go to Raquel’s Blog Post to see what I mean. She has a greeting attached to the back of Page 2 that is visible when the card is closed. Open the card and that greeting disappears and is replaced with a new inside greeting to match her party birds. Love this!

Summer Hills-Painter adds such fun details to her cards, including these sparkly rhinestone lips on this Katie Label Pivot Card. I like how she drew the colors for her cards from the patterned paper. See a supply list and more details on Summer’s Blog Post.

As you can see, the Pop it Ups Katie Label Pivot Card die set is very generic and can be used for any theme. Plus, it comes with five decorator dies in addition to the pop-up die.768 Katie Label Pivot NP

Next up, some ideas with the Pop it Ups Butterfly Pivot Card die set.

Helen Cryer has another wonderful creation mixing some fun patterns. For this card she mixed in the Butterfly Accessory Die and the Agatha Edges along with the decorator dies that come included with the Butterfly Pivot Card. See more photos and a full supply list on Helen’s Blog Post.

This beautiful card by Fran Sabad is so elegant and has the perfect sentiment. You’ll want to visit Fran’s Blog Post to see her supply list and the equally pretty card front.

Fran_Sabad_Butterfly

This card by Caz Counsell is a butterfly party on the inside! Love the pretty vibrant floral paper with the lacy butterflies overlaid. Great pearl accents, too. See the card front on Caz’s Blog Post. You can also see a great YouTube video by Caz showing the ease of the Pivot Cards on this blog post.

Caz_Counsell_Butterfly

The Pop it Ups Butterfly Pivot Card die set comes with 5 extra decorator dies as shown below. If you want even more companion butterflies, there is a Butterfly Accessory Die available as a separate purchase.

Finally, let’s take a look at some cards using the Pop it Ups Heart Pivot Card die set.

There are so many things to love about this techniques masterpiece by Shelly Hickox it’s hard to know where to begin! The way she’s created the finishes on the gears and key (notice the key is part of the greeting) is amazing and she has the neatest faux rivet techniques shown on Shelly’s Blog Post. You’ll definitely want to check it out, plus you can see this card in action in a little Vine video on Shelly’s blog.

Shelly_Hickox_Heart_Gears

Karen Aicken has created two Heart Pivot Cards for this month’s challenge in two completely different themes. For this Christmas Card she used the heart to illustrate the stamped greeting perfectly. I love her mixing of Peel-off stickers into the card for a bit of shimmer and elegance. See it closer on Karen’s Blog Post.

Karen_Aicken_Heart_Christmas

For her other Heart Pivot Card, Karen Aicken used it to make a very special 50th Anniversary card. This has a beautiful mix of shimmery papers and creates such an elegant card. You can see more details on Karen’s Blog Post.

Karen_Aicken_Heart_Anniversary

Gretchen Schmidt has the perfect tutorial for using the same card design with just a couple pieces of double-sided paper to create four cards that are the same . . . but different! See all the details on Gretchen’s Blog Post. This is a very practical way to produce a bunch of cards but have them all look unique.

Gretchen_Schmidt_Heart_Valentines

Frances Byrne shows another use for the Heart Pivot card that is not romantic love – it’s a Baby Girl card! So many beautiful details on this card, including embossed hearts and Agatha Edges. See everything on Frances’ Blog Post.

 Frances_Byrne_Heart_Baby

Fran Sabad made this next Heart Pivot Card and made some lovely effects by nesting the two largest decorator dies together for a delicate frame. I also love how she hung the key from twine in the opening. See all the details on Fran’s Blog Post.

Fran_Sabad_Heart_Valentine

Finally I want to share a very clever and beautiful card by our Guest Designer Sandy Diller. Sandy wanted to keep her pop-up a surprise for the recipient so she created a gate-fold card and used the Heart Pivot Card on the inner fold. You’ll definitely want to check out Sandy’s Blog Post to see the card closed. Thanks for joining us this month, Sandy!

I was sad that your relationship with Sizzix has been terminated, Karen, but the new connection with Elizabeth Crafts seems to be opening new possibilities for you. Cool technique for elongating that wonderful Katie Label. Can’t wait to play with it!

Wow, I need to watch the video again to capture all that awesomeness! Love that mosaic heart & I have GOT to get more of that glitter – one in every color please. The Silk Microfine Glitter is so soft & powder like & is so nice to work with. A big round of applause to the Designer Challenge team – we hit it off good. Great job to all & can’t wait for next month’s challenge.
