Birthday Gift Tags

March 6, 2014

It’s Karen Aicken here with today’s blog post. I enjoy making pretty gift tags, and adding them to a plain white or kraft gift bag with a coordinating ribbon. I made three Birthday Gift Tags to share with you today … here is the first one:

The Candles die set was one of the first ones I ever bought from Elizabeth Craft Designs, and I have to tell you I LOVE them.  I make a lot of birthday cards to donate to Seniors Secret Service, and there is so much versatility with these candles. They work for kids and adults, ladies and those ever-challenging masculine cards. They come with dies to layer on top of the base, but for this gift tag I decided to just use the base die.

To start out, cut a 3-3/4 x 7-1/2″ piece of white card stock and score at 3-3/4″ to create a 3-3/4″ square gift tag. You can place the fold at the left side or at the top, whichever you prefer.  Cut a 3-1/2″ square of green patterned paper, ink edges and attach to folded tag.

Cut a 4″ square of yellow patterned paper, and fit it over the Fancy Label Accordion. You don’t need the tabs or frame, you are just wanting the lovely bracket shape in the center. Run it through your die cut machine, snip away any extra pieces and ink the edges with orange. Then use foam tape to pop it up over the green layer.  You can see how the gift tag is starting to take shape now!

Using the largest decorator die that comes with the Fancy Label Accordion, cut one from blue patterned paper and ink edges. This piece is attached over the yellow one with foam tape.  Now cut your candles – I cut two from orange and two from striped patterned paper scraps. The edges were inked then three of them were layered over the top (blue) layer with foam tape.

The third candle was popped up inside the tag, and I cut a Happy Birthday from a green patterned paper scrap. I like to ink the bottom edge of the word dies, as it gives it an ombre look. Just remember to ink it on scrap paper before attaching it to your gift tag!

For the second Birthday Gift Tag, simply cut a tag shape free hand from sparkly patterned paper. This one is 4-3/4 x 2″ and I snipped off the corners to create the tag shape.

Use the Cupcake Die (another favourite of mine) to cut a cupcake from the bottom centre. Set the die cut cupcake aside for Tag #3.  Now cut a slightly larger tag from white card stock; 5 x 2-1/4″. Glue the tags together, centering the patterned one over the white one and cutting the top edges even.

Cut another cupcake die, this time from orange card stock. Lightly ink the bottom edges with orange and use a glue pen to attach the die cut to 90# water colour paper. You can use many different mediums to colour in your image and for today’s project I chose to colour with Tombow markers and a blender pen. When it was dry, I outlined inside the edges with a sparkly gel pen and coloured in the cherry with the same pen.

I am fairly new to using the Elizabeth Craft Designs Peel-Offs, but not their Glitter Dots. I LOVE GLITTER DOTS. I love all the sparkle and shine of a gem without the bulk. Plus, they come with different sizes on the same sheet! I added two different sizes of orange Glitter Dots to the cupcake liner then fussy cut the cupcake from the water colour paper.

Pop it up over the opening in the patterned paper with foam tape, punch a hole at the top of the tag and tie a pretty bow with seam binding.

Gift Tag number three uses the leftover Cupcake Die cut from the tag above. Once again, I glued it to water colour paper and coloured it in with Tombow markers and a blender pen.

I fussy cut the cupcake out, leaving a narrow border around the outside. Set it aside.

Using two decorator dies from the Oval Accordion set, cut the white oval with the stitched frame. Don’t you love how easy it is to add this stitching to the oval with these dies?  Now cut two 3 x 4-1/2″ pieces of card stock – one orange and one white.  Lay them on the Oval Accordion and cut with your die cutting machine. Snip off any extra pieces, ink the edges of the orange one and pop up the stitched oval onto the orange oval with foam tape. Now pop up your coloured cupcake onto the stitched oval.

Working on the remaining white oval, score a horizontal line about 3/4″ down from the top and trim off a straight edge from the bottom. Add adhesive above the score line and join the orange decorated tag to the white one. The straight edge at the bottom is what will allow your oval tag to stand on it’s own!

Once the tag was assembled, I resisted the urge to add glitter dots. Instead I added glitter glue to the cupcake liner and the cherry.  I wanted to show you some different looks, but honestly? If I was making these for me I would have added the Glitter Dots.  It IS a Birthday tag after all.

For the inside, cut a Happy Birthday from orange card stock and ink the bottom edges for an ombre effect. Glue inside the tag and you are finished.

Finally, here is a look at all three tags together:

Not only do these tags look great on a gift bag, they also make wonderful gifts when packaged in a cello bag with a pretty bow.

Thanks so much for stopping by today!
