Roses, Beads, and Butterfly Card

Creating the Card

The last card I posted was a bit involved so I thought I would simplify for my second post! Start by cutting a card base 6″x12″ from the Core’dinations Black Magic card stock. Fold it in half (I use a bone folder/burnishing bone to make a nice crease). Hint: if you aren’t a perfect folder, short the back side a tiny amount when you fold the card. Use sandpaper to sand some of the black coating off of the front of the card around the edges (I left the back side all black). Do NOT do this on your craft sheet if you are using one.

The Graphic 45 6×6 paper pad has this lovely kraft colored music sheet pictured. If you do not have it, just stamp music on a piece of kraft 6×6 card stock (to tone it down, you can stamp off on another sheet before stamping on the card stock without re-inking – this is second generation stamping). Tear a slight amount of paper around all the edges (tear towards you, with the good side facing you to get more effect). Using the ink blending tool, apply Antique Linen Distress Ink around the edges and also the back side of the paper where you plan to curl it, if desired. Using your fingers, curl the paper where  you inked on the back (it’s easier do this at the corners but you could also do it in the middle with some fiddling). Adhere this to the card base front. I made my card so it would open from the bottom; I oriented the card stock accordingly.

Adhere one side of the double-sided adhesive to cream or white card stock, keeping the backing sheet. Die cut the fancy butterfly (top layer) and rose bases from this. Die cut the delicate top layers of the roses from black card stock. Die cut two stems from green card stock. Die cut the small backing butterfly from the Core’dinations Black Magic card stock and sand it. Die cut the doily from Kraft Glassine. Crumple the Kraft Glassine doily until you get the look you desire (this puts white creases in it but also helps knock out the small pieces – although you may still have to pop out a few pieces by hand; I use a die pick for this). Place the delicate top layers of the roses face down onto the backing sheet you originally pulled off the double-sided adhesive (the side that was originally on the sticky part). Remove the top sheets from the rose base die cuts, exposing the other side of the adhesive. Carefully line up the bases with their matching tops and stick them down. Pull off the top sheet of the butterfly to expose the adhesive. Add glitter to exposed adhesive on the butterfly and roses. Polish it with your finger to get it really stuck down. Use a soft brush to knock off any excess glitter.

Using the listed Copic markers, blend from dark to light towards the tips of each of the petals on the flowers and from the center of the butterfly out towards the edges of the wings. I left the tips of the wings without color to match the seam binding ribbon. Apply Wink of Stella (optional) to the stems. Once dry, paint on a layer of Distress Crackle Paint and set it aside to dry. Once it is dry, use a die pick, edge of burnishing bone, or other tip to draw lines down the centers of each leaf from the back sides. This will both shape the leaves and make a white mark on the fronts of the leaves from the Crackle Paint. You may also do this with the stems, although I prefer to do the stems before applying the Crackle Paint so they will not get the white lines down them.

Roses, Beads, and Butterfly Card

Tear a piece of Core’dinations Black Magic card stock for under the roses, then emboss it and sand off the top layer to reveal the pattern. Adhere this, the doily, and the roses to the card as shown. Adhere the center of the fancy butterfly wings to the smaller base using glue. Gently bend the wings up on either side and adhere it to the card as shown.

To create the ribbon, I cut a little more than needed to wrap around the card. I ran some adhesive down the seam binding and stuck it to my craft sheet. Since I did not want beads inside the card, I placed the card about the middle of the ribbon and eye-balled about where to start adding beads, leaving extra wire on the ends to adhere just inside the card, under the ribbon. I started winding the green wire around the ribbon, adding beads here and there, lifting up sections of ribbon as necessary. Having parts of the ribbon stuck down made it easier to handle. I used my fingers to bend loops on either sides of the beads to keep them in place on the front of the ribbon. It may take some fiddling to get the look you desire. Once you have the beads worked out, gently lift the ribbon and stick it to the front of the card. You may want to do one side at a time (lifting the middle to slide the card under it). Be sure to wrap the ends of the wire around the edges of the card before putting the ribbon across the inside, covering up the ends of the wire to help keep them in place. You can cover the ends where the ribbon meets if you like, e.g. with a butterfly.

I love the sparkle of the glitter, Wink of Stella plus Crackle Paint, and beads! It really gives life to this card.
