Triple Pivot Card

Hi – it’s Karen Aicken here, and I have a Triple Pivot card to share today. This is the technique Karen Burniston shared on the Elizabeth Craft Designs Blog for the May Designer Challenge.

It’s useful for much more than just ‘Welcome Home’, or ‘Congratulations on Your New Home’. Our son is the proud owner of a new puppy and I wanted to make them a card to celebrate the occasion. It was the perfect opportunity to try a Triple Pivot card!

1.  Cut white card stock to 11 x 4-1/4″ and score down the center for a 5-1/2 x 4-1/4″ (A2) side fold card. Leave the card folded.

2.  Line up the center of the House portion Pivot with the fold, placing it wherever you want to along the fold. I left more space at the bottom. Make sure the fence and half the house are on your folded card, and the other half of the house is not going to cut anything. Now run this through your preferred die cutting machine.

3.  You will have a house in the center with a fence on either side. This was the first time I tried this technique, and I noticed that the very tip of the house and the very bottom didn’t cut all the way through, but with two quick scissor snips the house was free. Carefully fold the fence pivots and the house – it will help if you watch Karen Burniston’s video before you start. It would take me that long to describe how I do it!

4.  Next, open the card flat and add your background to the inside. You could stamp clouds and ground, or do as I did with a hand-made stencil, dye ink and a blending sponge. Make sure you add the background over the house portion as well. I didn’t do this at first, and had to go back in and do it further along.

5.  Cut two more fence sections, from white card stock. While the card is opened flat, attach the fences you just cut to the card base lining up the edges. They should fit perfectly! Refold the card to be sure everything lines up.

6.  As per the video, attach a strip of Washi tape down the center of the card. Note – I am not a fan of Washi tape. I didn’t think I even had any, but when I looked I saw that indeed I did have a roll and it had paw prints on it. Serendipity!

7.  Die cut the brick house from patterned paper, then run it back through your machine using your preferred embossing sandwich. This will emboss the bricks onto the house. Alternatively, you could stencil them on leaving the die in place after cutting the house. Trim a little off each side at an angle as shown. Ink all edges and bricks to make them ‘pop’.

8.  Die cut the roof gables from pink card stock and ink the edges. Adhere to the dog house.

9.  Die cut an oval from pink card stock and ink the edges.  I used the oval that comes with the Pop it Ups Katie Label Pivot set. Glue this to the dog house trimming off the bottom edge.

10.  Score the dog house down the center and add foam tape to the back, along both sides only.
Set aside.

11. Cut 3 sets of flowers from the same pink card stock, and layer them together with glue. Lightly curl the leaves and add marker to the top bloom. I added black centers by using the leftover bits from a black Peel-Off border.  Set aside.

12. Cut Congratulations from the same pink card stock and lightly ink the bottom edge with brown. Set aside.

13.  Cut two pieces of double sided patterned paper that matches your project. They should be sized at 4-1/4″ high and 2-3/4″ wide. As shown in the video, apply your adhesive only to the area that will be covered by the paper, and adhere your patterned paper.

14.  Stamp images on white card stock using the ink that will work for your coloring medium. Because I was using Copic Markers, I stamped mine with Momento Tuxedo Black. Color, fussy cut and set aside.

15.  Now you have all your pieces ready to adhere to your card! Start with the dog house, attaching it as shown. Add the other pieces as shown or as desired. I used varying heights of foam tape for added dimension, as well as a glue pen to attach some directly to the card.

16.  Stamp words on the top left.

17. Add a portion of a fancy lace Peel-Off across the top left corner and color with Tombow markers. Use a light hand, so they don’t bleed through to the front of the card.

I have used this House Pivot quite a bit since it was released, and I’m so happy to have a new look for it. Remember you can also cut it so you have two houses and a fence in the center, rather than the two fences with a house in the center. So many possibilities – I hope you will give the Triple Pivot technique a try!
