Karen Burniston Pop it Ups Designer Challenge – What a bunch of Characters!

August 20, 2014

Hi, it’s Karen Burniston with the August Pop it Ups Designer Challenge. Each month I challenge my Designer Challenge team to use Pop it Ups dies for a specific theme. This month the challenge was to use the Character dies (Hoppy the Frog, Poppy the Owl, Chilly the Penguin and optional Props1) to make any sort of project, pop-up or otherwise. You’re going to love the clever creations they’ve made.

910 - Poppy the Owl  910 - Poppy the Owl

910 - Poppy the Owl  910 - Poppy the Owl

For my project, I have used the new Spiral Circle Pull Card, the All Seasons Tree plus Poppy the Owl and Props 1 for an all-purpose Love card (or should I say “owl-purpose”?).  This would make a great back-to-school card, too. Learn how I made it, along with general tips and tricks for the Spiral Circle Pull Card die plus several great decorated samples from the team in this video tutorial:

Here are photos of the finished card, which measures 5″ wide by 6″ tall and will mail for a single stamp in an A7 envelope (5×7).

Time to check out the amazing inspiration by the Designer Challenge Team.

11DC Team Album

Hoppy the Frog:

Caz Counsell got very clever making a card in the shape of a lily pad. Then she added the Lots of Pops Pop it Ups die inside to animate Hoppy the Frog, wearing Props 1.

Caz_Hoppy

Fran Sabad used Hoppy for a festive Thank You card using the Lorna Label pop-up and the Agatha Edges dies. Such fun colors in this card. See the front on Fran’s blog.

Fran_Hoppy

Helen Cryer’s Hoppy Fancy Accordion card is full of fun. Such great patterns and colors, including jump lines for Hoppy and little Props1 bows with pearl-centers in the corners. She had me at hello.

Helen_Hoppy

Raquel Mason doubled the Lorna Label pop-up die by cutting it into a folded card instead of an open card. This creates a double platform and she decorated it perfectly with Hoppy decorated as a tree frog. The All Seasons Tree makes a great branch for the Characters by turning it sideways. Raquel also used the Outdoor Edges on this card and she’ll be teaching it as a class in Florida in September. (details on her blog)

Raquel_Hoppy

Frances Byrne created such fabulous movement with this Spiral Circle Pull Card featuring Hoppy and the lips from Props 1. Notice that she decorated the tuck slots with little flies. The coloring on the lilies is fabulous.

Frances_Hoppy1

Frances_Hoppy2

Karen Aicken also used Hoppy with the Spiral Circle Pull Card die, but for her card she did not use the spiral die and made a gate-fold double instead. She also added a spring feature behind the frogs so they jiggle. Love the use of the Props 1 to create a masculine and feminine Hoppy.

KarenA_Hoppy1 KarenA_Hoppy2

Summer Hills-Painter made a quick and easy card front using Hoppy holding the present from the Evergreen Pivot Card. The Character dies are a nice finished size (around 2.5″ tall) to fill the space for card fronts. She also took advantage of the emboss/stencil feature on Hoppy to add leg spots and nostrils.

Summer_Hoppy

Kelly Booth made these adorable lunch box notes for her grandkids. How sweet for them to get a special little note from Mom and Grandma each day in their lunch. She used Hoppy the Frog and Props 1.

Kelly_Hoppy

Chilly the Penguin:

Fran Sabad used Chilly the Penguin to decorate a Bell jar to fill with candy. What a great way to present a gift. Six Chillys will fit perfectly on the jar. Fran also used the snowflake decorator die that is included with the All Seasons Tree and embellished with rhinestones. See the top of the jar on her blog.

Fran_Chilly

Caz Counsell made a brilliant card featuring a scene with Chilly the Penguin making a snow penguin. She used the shadow layer of the Chilly die for the snowman and added Chilly’s scarf and the hat from Props 1. She created a background using the Outdoor Edges and snowflakes from the All Seasons Tree. Love this!

Caz_Chilly

Frances Byrne is clever, clever, clever! I love that she used the Evergreen Pivot Card and the Outdoor Edges to make a snowy scene for Chilly the Penguin (wearing Props 1) and then used the greeting “Have a chillin’ birthday!” so it could be used any time of the year. Great color combo, too!

Frances_Chilly

Poppy the Owl:

Kelly Booth made this adorable birthday card for my twins’ 16th birthday using Poppy the Owl and Props 1 on a doubled Lorna Label pop-up card. For the grass in the background she used the Outdoor Edges. Karl and Emma loved it!

Kelly_Poppy

Donna Wright was commissioned to make a Mr. & Mr. wedding card and used Poppy the Owl and Props 1 on the Spiral Circle Pull Card. Notice her use of different colors to create tuxedos for the owls – how clever!

Donna_Poppy

Frances Byrne used the Happy Birthday Stand-up Helper die to create a great easel card and then decorated with Poppy the Owl perched on an All Seasons Tree used as a branch. Love the leaves especially!

Frances_Poppy

Caz Counsell shows how perfectly the Characters fit on the Accordion Album dies. For her card she used the Oval Accordion and *NEW* Oval Clouds Frame Edges plus Poppy the Owl. She also mixed in some of the decorator dies from other sets. (I encourage this! Don’t think the decorator dies are just for the set they came with.)

Caz_Poppy

Fran Sabad really had fun with Poppy and the Props1 die for this card, attaching all the props to swing-out arms so it becomes a fun interactive card for the recipient. She also made a kids’ art holder using Poppy dressed as a scholar. Amazing projects!

Fran_Poppy1 Fran_Poppy2 Fran_Poppy3

Karen Aicken has packed a lot of smiles into one awesome Heart Pivot Card. Poppy the Owl looks great in pink, along with the Props 1 glasses and perched on an All Seasons Tree. Notice the clever use of a dots stamp to fill in the foliage on the tree. She rounds it out with an Agatha Edges flourish along the bottom. Lovely!

KarenA_Poppy1 KarenA_Poppy2

Summer Hills-Painter created a great easel card in a wedding theme by using the Square w/Circle Frame Edges as a backdrop and filling in with a happy Poppy couple. The crown on the bride is made using a decorator die from the Katie Label Accordion die and the Props 1 die creates the rest of the accessories. How clever to use Poppy’s heart as the eyes! The Congratulations Stand-up Helper works perfectly to make this an elegant gift for the newlyweds.

Summer_Poppy

Shelly Hickox created one of her signature Shellypieces for this month’s challenge. She used the new Ring Accordion album, Poppy the Owl, Props 1 and the Clock and Gears die for a fantastic steampunked birthday card. Poppy has a monocle and spats!

Shelly_Poppy

More than one Character:

Raquel Mason made this sensational gatefold Spiral Circle Pull Card to showcase two of the Characters – Poppy and Chilly, plus Props 1, the present from the Evergreen Pivot Card, the fence post (as a candle) from the House Pivot Card, and the Clock and Gears dies. So many amazing details in this card!

Raquel_Poppy_Chilly1 Raquel_Poppy_Chilly2Raquel_Poppy_Chilly3
What a bunch of Characters, eh? Hopefully you feel inspired to make something with Hoppy the Frog, Chilly the Penguin and Poppy the Owl (plus Props 1).

I’ll be back next month on September 17th with another Designer Challenge. In September the Designers have been challenged to use Pop it Ups dies for Spooky September and inspire your Halloween creations.

Happy Crafting!

  • pinkletterink August 24, 2014 at 9:29 am

I am not that crazy about animals, but what you’ve done with the owl & penguin could appeal to me. It’s your creative talent that makes the die cuts fun & happy. I would like to see a panda or koala bear. Maybe even a wallaby. And a bunny would be cute! –Lynn

I’m new to card making so have fallen love with all the pop up dies. These dies give an unique perspective to the cards. The cards are different from the kind you see in stors. I love to see any sea creature but my favorite would be a sea turtle like “Crush” in “Finding Nemo.”

  • Karyn August 22, 2014 at 5:59 pm

Karen, I always enjoy your work. The Characters exude playfulness; perhaps you could add a Merry Moose for the north woods folks, or a Penny Panda with bamboo, a Tom Turkey or a Thumper Bunny might round out your menagerie. A Benny Beagle would work well with a Fluffy Rag Doll or Kitty Kat….needless to say, I see a unlimited possibilities for your zoo;-D

  • Cynthia Clark August 21, 2014 at 9:35 pm

  • Theresa August 21, 2014 at 9:06 pm

  • cindy coven August 21, 2014 at 6:13 pm

  • Stephanie August 21, 2014 at 2:51 pm

I love all of these! As I scrolled down the page I’d think, “oh, that’s my favorite.” Then I’d get to the next one and think the same thing. I definitely can’t pick a favorite because I love them all! I would love to see a goofy dog or cat die. The existing characters are so cute that I can only imagine what a funny dog or cat would look like. Oh! How about a fox, too?? Or a kangaroo?

  • Roxanne Dorsey August 21, 2014 at 2:34 pm

I think a cat , dog, lizard, are critters that would be cute to add to your collection. thank you

  • Thérèse August 21, 2014 at 12:58 pm

I would love to see you come up with a Rabbit.

  • Barbara Washington August 21, 2014 at 12:30 pm

These critters are so adorable and fun, fun, fun. It’s hard to choose a favorite. In the future (and I know there will be one) I would love to see a kitty. I’m such a cat fan. Also, if there is a props 2, a graduation cap would be great. A hippo or rhino would be a little more unusual.

  • Janet Castle August 21, 2014 at 11:15 am

    • Rose Reynolds August 21, 2014 at 9:59 am

I have Poppy and love all you have been creating with him and other animals, which I plan to get. I think that maybe a girl and boy character would be fun to go along with the dog and cat. Also more accessory dies to create more scenes with them.

  • Deb Hurtig August 21, 2014 at 9:30 am

    An elephant … Of course!

I love the new dies; if you want an idea for another ‘pop up’ character, how about a meerkat?

  • Nona August 20, 2014 at 11:32 pm

I love the little owl, but since I have four dogs, I think I would find a lot of things I could do with a dog die.

We need a koala bear!!! That would be adoreable!

  • NANCY VANDEVANDER August 20, 2014 at 10:35 pm

Karen, all of the dies you have created have been great and your design team has come up with such creative ways to use them all! I have too many suggestions for your next creations, it is too hard to pick just one. I have several foxes that visit my yard year round and they are such fun to watch, but moose and dolphins have always been some of my favorites also. I am a scuba diver and the dolphins are such beautiful creatures to watch swimming along with our dive boats, I never get tired of watching them. Panda bears and polar bears would also be fun! The suggestions are never ending, good luck!

Great inspiration. Love the owl character, but I think my favorite bird, that I hardly see anywhere is a puffin. Wouldn’t that make a cool die?

  • Helen BT August 20, 2014 at 7:40 pm

I love all the DT cards this month as well as yours. You are all so creative! I would LOVE to see a fox die but I also like a lot of the other suggestions too especially Santa, Koala, Panda and maybe an elf,

  • Mary M. August 20, 2014 at 7:38 pm

  • Myrna G August 20, 2014 at 7:32 pm

I have a couple of suggestions for dies you could try, a butterfly coming out of a cocoon, a chick/duckling hatching out of an egg, a squirrel, a cute mouse, how about some scarab type beetles, they would work really well with the Shimmerz Sheets, a meerkat, an aye-aye (look it up), an armadillo, a turtle/tortoise, snake, a seal pup, a narwhal, a dugong, an echidna, a platypus, a kangaroo, a lemur and a preying mantis, I’d better leave it at that. I did say a couple!!!! My son suggested a few as well!!!

I have a pig rubber stamp that’s a super hero. A plain pig die with an optional cape would be cute. I love Penny Black’s hedgehog, cows and chickens. You could put your own spin on any of these animals.

  • Judi Kauffman August 20, 2014 at 5:15 pm

Fabulous! It’s always such a treat to see the Challenge Day projects all at once.

    Thanks for chance to win.

  • Connie L. Riley August 20, 2014 at 5:11 pm

Hello Karen. Amazing line up this month in the challenge. Absolutely loved Shelly’s card with the punked out Poppy! I almost overlooked this little guy until I saw all the fabulous examples from the DT and others. Then, he and the other two characters along with Props 1 became a must have item! I was thinking along the lines of suggesting you add a Robot to you line of characters so I could punk him or her up. Now that I see what cleverness Shelly came up with, perhaps just a steampunk props kit with goggles, etc would be nice. A Koala Bear would also be nice. Thanks for the video; it was fantastic as usual!

Love, love, love these characters and with added accessories – how cute is that. There are so many animals to choose from with the cute factor. I am a bear type of person, but the hairy mane of a lion has that cute factor also. Keep up the character line and movables. They are right up my alley. Thanks Karen.

Adorable cards and the dies are terrific. I’d love to see a dog die as the dog days of summer will be coming to an end soon:(

  • Pammy August 20, 2014 at 2:49 pm

I think something in a cute and whimsical monkey would really be cute. I love these little critters and am glad you’re going to keep the “family” growing. I know whatever you come up with will be terrific.

  • storky46 August 20, 2014 at 2:49 pm

Karen, these characters are all so cute. I have the owl and have used him already! Thanks for inviting suggestions. I would love to see a sassy yellow tabby (well, that would be MY color choice for the die). I would name him Robert Lee after my year old tabby. As a second choice, a French poodle would be perfect for all the accessories!

  • gladys pérez-almiroty August 20, 2014 at 2:33 pm

  • Barb Mc August 20, 2014 at 2:33 pm

Love all these great cards! I especially loved your card with transparent circle! So amazing! I think your next die should be a critter that we both share a love for – a dog!

    Thanks for the amazing giveaways!

  • Frances Byrne August 20, 2014 at 2:29 pm

  • Barbara Woodard August 20, 2014 at 2:10 pm

Oh love all the cute card ideas and of course your video was amazing as well. I’m thinking I would like to have a bear character die that had props to change his appearance from a koala to a polar to a regular bear. An elephant, monkey, dog, cat, and bee would be fun choices as well. thanks Karen for this awesome opportunity and sharing all your creativeness!!

  • Pauline Mcintyre August 20, 2014 at 2:00 pm

For us “down under” a kiwi would be amazing but…..a fat cat would be just as much fun. The characters are so much fun to decorate. Thanks

  • Nancy Carr August 20, 2014 at 1:54 pm

I love the character dies, especially Chilly. Would love to see a koala character die and can just
imagine all the cute ways to dress it up!

  • Diane H August 20, 2014 at 1:53 pm

Super cute…love that little owl times two…guess that means I love him a lot…lol…I would love to see a giraffe , I know silly, but I think with the long necks it would be so cute and I like the idea of a fox, too..how about a your stinkin cute skunk…ok, I’ll quit …adorable release!!

  • Florence Davis August 20, 2014 at 1:37 pm

So many cute designs – so little time! Would love to see a DOG in the Character line up.

  • Sandy August 20, 2014 at 1:36 pm

I’d love to see a dragon, is it even possible to do? Altho that flying pig one of the commentors suggested was pretty cute seeing I have a necklace and small lamp of a flying pig with wings!
That owl with the hat with gears caught the eye and the glitteer on the frogs lips just brought on a smile.

  • BeverlyBL August 20, 2014 at 1:30 pm

Love everybody’s cards. So many talented people in one spot. Love all of your little characters, but do find frog lips a bit disconcerting. I could see using a cute, friendly, tail wagging puppy, if you ever need any ideas. Thanks to all who contribute for all the wonderful creations and videos.

  • Mary Grauel August 20, 2014 at 1:26 pm

Great cards! I would love to add a hound dog to the lineup.

  • Brenda Stevens August 20, 2014 at 12:29 pm

Karen, who-o-o should I choose as my favorite character die? It is a very hard choice. The little toad makes me so hoppy when I glance at him, the penguin makes me feel cool even in summer, especially when they put him into a snowman scene, but I think the wise choice would be the little owl, because I could make so many cards for my niece who-o-o loves owls!

  • Marlene L. August 20, 2014 at 12:28 pm

Love all your critters. A panda bear, chick or bunny with floppy ears would be most welcome. More accessories, Please!

  • Comeka Earl August 20, 2014 at 12:26 pm

These are great pictures. How about a flying pig!

  • Sharon Sutton August 20, 2014 at 12:23 pm

The animals are cute , would love to see an elephant with a trunk that was moveable.

  • Elizabeth Green August 20, 2014 at 12:20 pm

I love the accessories that go with the animals (especially the glitter lips on the frog). Just think of what you could do with an elephant… jewellery for the ears, glasses on the eyes and a dunce cap. Heck.. any circus animal would be cute.

  • TReist August 20, 2014 at 12:16 pm

Karen I love the animals. I would like to see a kitten added to the collection

I would love to see a Polar Bear, and thanks for the chance to win.

  • barb macaskill August 20, 2014 at 11:56 am

LOVE Chilly the Penguin!! He needs a friend so a Polar Bear die would be ICY HOT! Or, maybe a Harold the Horse or Hoppy could use an Iguana friend by the name of Iggy! I can see an Iguana wearing a top hat! What fun that would be! These are just a few of the ideas that I have thought of for new dies!
LOVE what the designers have come up with using these adorable dies! TFS!

  • Ann Bogue August 20, 2014 at 11:55 am

Love your designs. I would like to see a dog which is not so carton styled. Maybe a sweet fox would be great.

  • wanda welch August 20, 2014 at 11:51 am
