Spooky Hedgehogs Halloween

October 9, 2015

Petroschi Bianca (25)

Hello dear friends, it’s Petroschi Bianca.

This month, on October 31 it’s Halloween.Wiiiiiii!!!!! Did you know that over 160 million people will celebrate by dressing up, giving out candy, attending parties, and covering porches in spooky decorations? If things are so, it looks like perfect time to begin preparations.Hihihihi!!!!

Petroschi Bianca (45)

For today’s blog post I created a card in which I used a combination of dies from Elizabeth Craft Designs , 2 rubber stamps of Susan’s Garden collection, and my set of clear photopolymer stamps Hedgehog Daisy Halloween.

Petroschi Bianca (38)

Because it would take a very long time to explain how I made the card, and a lot of pictures, I created a video to show you the steps.

*Note that you can stop the video anytime you want if you find an interesting image, or you wish to watch it longer.

Pop it Ups

Pop it Ups Wednesday with Kelly – Happy Fall!

October 7, 2015

Hi it’s Kelly Booth I just love Jolly the Mouse by Karen Burniston and thought I would show you how I made this Rectangle Pull Card using fall leaves and some fun backgrounds!

Watermarked Photo 1 (2015-09-30-1220)(1)

Watermarked Photo 4 (2015-09-30-1221)

I don’t know about you but I love playing with different mediums and making colorful backgrounds. For this one I used a 4.25″ by 5″.25″ piece of Watercolor paper and scribbled different colors of Gelatos onto it. I then with my fingers I blended the colors.  Next I took a Stencil placed it over the background and with a baby wipe wiped away a little of the color in the negative space.

Below is the result.

I then used Susan’s Garden Fall Leaves and die cut each one twice creating my leaves for the card.

I used the Elizabeth Craft Designs/Susan’s Garden tool kit and worked in some veins in the leaves and shaped the leaves slightly and set them aside.

1. Start with a piece of Smooth Finish cardstock 7.5″ by 5″ scored in the center at 3 3/4″. Stamp both sides with a wood grain stamp using a gray or gray brown ink. Center the Rectangle Pull Card Die over the fold and run through your die cutting machine. Fold at score lines and shape the card.

2. Take some small pieces of light gray, pink, black and white and back them with ECD Double Sided Adhesive Tape. Create 2 Jolly’s using a dark gray for the shadow layer and light gray for his body.  I used black and white for his eyes, white for the whiskers, and pink for his nose and ears.  For his tail, hands and feet I used a beige adhesive velvet. ( The Jolly on the Front will not need hands and feet since they don’t show on the card)

3. Cut a large rectangle and a small rectangle by combining decorator dies from the Rectangle Accordion and the Rectangle Pull Card and using Smooth Finish cardstock.  Ink the large rectangle with a light blue ink so that it looks like sky and place it in the center of the front of the card. Cut away Jolly’s lower body and save the tail. Place Jolly about an inch from the bottom and position his tail to the right side of his body in the upward position.

4. To make Jolly look like he is in the ground start with a piece of medium gray card stock about 2″ by 4″ and die cut using the lower half of the larger rectangle die (used on the sky background). Run that piece back through the machine using the Outdoor Edges ground piece and adhere the wavy ground piece at the bottom of the sky rectangle so Jolly is peeking out of the ground.

5. Adhere the smaller rectangle on the left of the inside of the card.  From a scrap of white Smooth Finish cardstock cut the rectangle spinner, fold it and adhere inside the card. Put a little adhesive in the Spinner and attach the Whole Jolly!

6. Take a piece of orange water colored background backed with Adhesive and cut the Happy from the Happy birthday Pop It Up set and the Letters Fall from the ECD Alphabet Caps set.  Place the Happy on the front of the card above Jolly.  Place the FALL on the Left Inside on the small rectangle.

7. To finish the card place leaves at the bottom of the front randomly to cover Jolly’s Lower body and the ground a bit. Place Leaves  on the inside right of the card towards the bottom using adhesive. Place one Leaf under Jolly’s arm so it looks like he is holding it.  Cut one small label from the Fancy Label Accordion and place at top right of the inside of the card.

Christmas Treat Holder Doorhanger

October 6, 2015

ECDChristmasDoorHanger1wm2

Hi everyone,

It’s Frances Byrne here. Earlier on in the week on my blog I posted a Halloween Treat Holder Doorhanger for a challenge I do. With Christmas edging closer, I thought it would be fun to create a Christmas version of this which included instructions. This can be used to give a Christmas treat of some kind or even a small gift. It can be hung on a door handle or if you prefer hung on a Christmas Tree.

ECDChristmasDoorHangerwm2

Here is how I created the card:

  1. Cut a piece of red cardstock so it measures 4 1/4 inches x 12 inches and another piece that is 4 1/4 inches x 3 1/2 inches.

ECDChristmasDoorHanger3wm

  • Take the larger piece of red card and using the tag edge from the Tags & More 9 – Sparkle die set place this as close as you can to one edge of the card and run through die cutting machine.

ECDChristmasDoorHanger5wm

  • Place the card so the straight edge of the card is in the corner of your scoring tool and score piece at 3 1/2 inches and 4 1/4 inches.

ECDChristmasDoorHanger6wm

  • Next score the smaller piece of red card at 1/2 inch; 1 1/4 inches; 5 1/2 inches and 6 1/4 inches.

ECDChristmasDoorHanger7wm

  • You should now have two pieces of red card that look like the photo above. Apply adhesive to the back of the smallest piece and attach it to the front of the back panel so that the bottom of the piece is lined up with the score lines. Note: by placing the solid panel to the hanger piece as instructed above we will be able to hid any joins with our designer paper.

ECDChristmasDoorHanger4wm

2. Take a piece of designer paper that measures 4 1/4 inches by 7 3/4 inches (note: I used paper from a 6 x 6 paper pad so mine is shorter as long as the paper goes past the opening it will work). Using the tag edge from the Tags & More 9 – Sparkle die set place this as close as you can to one edge of the card and run through die cutting machine.

  • Remove the tag edge die from the paper and position the decorative edge die so it is level with the curved shape of the tag and run through your die cutting machine.
  • Adhere the designer paper to the back panel of your hanger piece.

3. Create the hole in the back panel of the door hanger so it can be hung on a door or tree by die cutting a solid shaper (circle, heart, ornament). As this one is Christmas themed I die cut the solid ornament from the Ornaments 2 die set.

  • Optional: Cut a slit from the left edge of the hanger to the side of the ornament so the slit is at an angle. Cut another slit slightly down from the first so you have a tiny gap. Note: Whether you do this step will depend on where you intend to hang the completed hanger, if you are going to hang on a large knob type door hanger you will need to do this otherwise you can omit this step if preferred.

ECDChristmasDoorHanger2wm2

4. Apply adhesive to the tabs of the side pieces and attach them to the front panel to create the box to hold your treats.

5. Apply a piece of Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the front of a piece of white card which is  measures 4 1/4 inches x 3 inches. Place the wavy edge (snow) from the Outdoor Edges die set onto this card so it is approx 1 1/4 inches up from the edge of the card. Place the Merry Christmas die on the excess piece above the wavy edge and die cut.

  • Remove the protective backing from the die cut pieces. Cover the adhesive with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter, polish glitter with your finger and brush excess off.
  • Attach pieces to box using photo above as placement guide.

6.  Apply a piece ofTransparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the front of a piece of green card approx 6 inches x 5 inches. Using the 5 Part Pine die set die cut the following:

  • 2 each of the three middle sized tree pieces
  • 1 of the largest tree pieces

7.  Carefully remove the protective backing from the top portion of each of the tree pieces so that the bottom part is still protected and cover adhesive with Spring Peridot Silk Microfine Glitter, polish glitter with your finger and brush excess off.

  • Remove the remaining piece of protective backing and cover with Forest Green Silk Microfine Glitter, polish glitter with your finger and brush excess off.
  • Note: If preferred you could have snowy branches by substituting Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter in place of the Forest Green color. If you wish to do this, apply the Warm Diamond to the trees first and then the green so avoid contamination of your clear glitter.

8.  Decorate the trees by attaching Red/Gold Glitter Dots Peel Off Stickers to them.

Owls In Silhouette

October 5, 2015

IMG_4547 Owls in silhouette 100515

Hello everyone,

It’s Christine Pooler here from Susan Tierney-Cockburn’s Design Team. For my post today I have chosen several of Susan’s CountryScapes dies to build a scene in silhouette. Susan’s CountryScapes dies gives you so many possibilities. I also used Elizabeth Craft Designs new Soft Finished Cardstock which is a great product. For the background I used a technique called “Northern Lights”.

1. Cut 1 piece of white cardstock 10″ X 7″ and score the 10″ side at 5″ and fold in half to form the card base.
2. Cut 1 piece of Elizabeth Craft Designs new Soft Finished 100 lb cardstock 5″ X 7″.

Northern Lights Technique:

a. Take the 5″ X 7″ piece of  Soft Finished cardstock and using a rubbing motion take a sponge and yellow ink apply the ink randomly across the cardstock.
b. Using the same rubbing motion and green ink apply ink just below the yellow ink.
c. Begin filling in some of the white spaces with turquoise ink.
d. Fill in remaining white spaces with purple ink slightly blending some of the colors.
e. Sponge dark blue ink randomly over a few areas of the previous colors. Leave some areas light/bright and other areas dark/shadowed.
f. Sponge black ink along the edges of the dark blue to help add depth.

3. Attach the completed piece to the card front using clear double sided adhesive.
4. Using black cardstock with double sided clear adhesive attached to the back (makes instant stickers) cut 3 trees from Susan’s CountryScapes – Backyard 3, cut 3 owls and several bats from Susan’s CountryScapes – Critters 4 and cut stonewall base and gate from Susan’s CountryScapes – New England Stonewall and Gate.
5. Now build your scene removing the protective covering from the adhesive and attaching pieces to your background starting with the trees and adding the wall and gate last.
6.  Cut a piece of white cardstock 5″ X 7″ and using your cutter and allowing a 1/2″ border on the right place your blade at 1/2″ and cut to 6-1/2″ turn cardstock allow 1/2″ border on right insert blade 1/2″ down and cut to 4-1/2″ then repeat on the remaining two sides and remove the center.  Attach frame over your card front using double sided clear adhesive.
7.  Place peel off stickers in your corners.

It is now time for you to get your creative juices flowing and create your own card.  I do hope you have enjoyed my post today.  With all of Susan’s CountryScape dies the possibilities are endless such as the sweet little snowman die that could make a great Christmas card.

Until next time – Happy scrapping!

Christine

Shimmer Sheetz Pen Stand

October 4, 2015

PenStand-C

By Judi Kauffman

The Els van de Burgt Studio Card Stand/Easel die is right up there on my must-have go-to list with Glitter Dots Peel-offs! I knew it would be a perfect way to display cards, postcards, photos, and such, but my imaginative friend Darla had so many other ideas; one of them – a Pen Stand. Brilliant! (Thank you, D.)

By making the Pen Stand with Shimmer Sheetz on the front and heavy cardstock on the back it is super sturdy as well as elegant, with the look of expensive metal. And I discovered that by embossing the sides but not the center portion of the Stand it has an extra level of strength and stability. The un-embossed area becomes a strong vertical spine, just like a person with good posture!

PenStand-E

I knew in advance which pen it would hold so I chose a muted palette in keeping with an heirloom vintage silver pen, but your Pen Stand can be brighter, shinier – whatever you want.

Customize the project to suit the writing instrument, the décor, your taste or the taste of the recipient. Alter the Shimmer Sheetz with alcohol inks, or skip that step and just emboss and sand it; any allover pattern embossing folder will work.

Imagine a White Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz Pen Stand next to the guest book at a wedding; a Turquoise Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz Pen Stand with a chunky marker as a colorful statement next to a family message board. With a Pen Stand the pen is right where you expect it to be, unless you have a cat with other ideas…

Instructions:

1. Alter a 5” x 6.25” piece of Black Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz with alcohol inks in dark colors plus gold metallic. (Option: Skip the alcohol inks.) Back the rectangle with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet.

PenStand-A

2. Die cut one Stand from the Shimmer Sheetz and a second from a piece of coordinating solid color cardstock. (Always use the Metal Adaptor Plate when die cutting Shimmer Sheetz. Review Els van de Burgt’s YouTube tutorial if you are new to this technique.)

3. Remove the release sheet from the back of the Shimmer Sheetz to expose the adhesive. Carefully line up the two pieces to make a 2-layer Stand.

PenStand-B

4. Working one side at a time and making sure that the bumps of the clouds are oriented toward the TOP of the Stand, emboss the left and then the right side. Leave the center .25” of the Stand un-embossed. (Tip: Fold Stand along the scoring line at the center. Use the fold to align the Stand in the embossing folder. This will automatically leave an un-embossed spine.)

PenStand-D

5. Lightly sand the Shimmer Sheetz to tone down the Stand. For a shinier Stand, omit this step.

6. Carefully and firmly fold the Stand along the scoring line so it is at a right angle. Rest the pen across the Stand and enjoy it!

Supplies:

Elizabeth Craft Designs –
1071 Card Stand/Easel die
KB105 Clouds embossing folder
SS 0101 Black Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz (5” x 6.25”) or color of choice
803 Metal Adaptor Plate
Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet (5” x 6.25” piece)

Other – Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks and Gold Metallic Mixative, Ink Applicator Tool (Ranger Industries, Inc.); Sanding block; Solid color cardstock to coordinate with Shimmer Sheetz; Die cutting/embossing machine (Big Shot, Cuttlebug, or other); An interesting pen!

Pop it Ups

Pop it Ups Christmas in Paris

October 3, 2015

Happy Saturday, everyone! It’s Shelly with you today to share a pretty, French-inspired Christmas card using a variety Pop it Ups dies. One of the things I love about Pop it Ups is how easy they are to mix and match. One of my favorites is the Lots of Pops dies – there are so many ways you can use it!

shelly hickox pop it ups joyeaux noelHow gorgeous is that glittery Eiffel Tower?! I love how well it pairs with the Lots of Pops accessories, and of course, with the Paris Edges die set. While this card might look complicated, it’s actually quite simple. Here’s how I made it:

IMG_35761. Begin by cutting a 12″ x 5″ piece of cardstock. Crease down the center, then cut the pop up element with the Lots of Pops die. Because I wanted a contrasting paper on the back, I cut another piece of paper to 6″ x 5″ and cut the bottom edge with the Lots of Pops die, aligning the center points with the bottom edge of the cardstock. Trim to fit around the pop-up, then train the folds and adhere the contrasting paper to the top. Cut the top edge using one of the edge dies from the Agatha Edges die set (not shown).

IMG_35552. Apply Elizabeth Craft Designs Double Sided Adhesive to a piece of beige cardstock, leaving the release paper adhered on one side. With the release paper side up, die cut the Eiffel Tower. Remove release paper and cover adhesive with Champagne Gold Silk Microfine Glitter. Polish with your finger and tap to remove excess. Set aside.

IMG_35803. Cut the elements for the inside of the card using the dies shown above. The banners and pole are included in the Lots of Pops die set, the fleur de lis border is from the Paris Edges die set, and the flourish is from the Agatha Edges set.

IMG_35824. Adhere the banner poles to the narrow pop-up ledge on either side of the main pop-up element. Glue the banners to a length of baker’s twine and tie to top of poles. Add red adhesive pearls to the Eiffel Tower as shown and adhere the tower to the main pop-up. Adhere the red flourish to the top of the card as shown, trimming to fit if necessary (I didn’t want the text on the paper to be hidden by the flourish).

IMG_3583

5. Create a pocket on the lower half of the card by applying glue to the outer edges of the fleur de lis Paris Edges border, leaving the top edge open, and adhere to card. Cut elements from decorative paper and insert into pocket. Glue lace trim to top. Note – I also added a small fleur de lis cut from glitter paper to the small pop-up as seen above.

shelly hickox pop it ups christmas card front6. To complete the card, cut a backing piece from coordinating cardstock measuring 6″ x 5″ and score at 2.5″. Adhere to card, being sure to avoid getting adhesive on the pop-up mechanism. Embellish with ribbon and a length of lace and your card is complete! The completed card is a top fold 5″ x 6″ card that can be mailed in an A7 (5×7) envelope.

shelly hickox pop it ups french xmasI hope my tutorial has inspired you to mix and match your dies in new and interesting ways. Even though this card is a Christmas theme, all you need to do is change out the paper and you can make it work for any occasion – a special birthday, bon voyage, anniversary…the possibilities are only limited by your imagination!

A Way With Words

More Fun Times with Fitted Frames

October 2, 2015

9-20-2015-A

By Judi Kauffman

My last Guest Designer project for the Elizabeth Craft Designs blog (Fun Times with Fitted Frames, September 6, 2015) used three of the same die sets as this time – Fitted Frames 2 Curvy Rectangles, Leaf & Berry Branches, and Congratulations.

I thought it would be fun to keep going with the same dies to show how endlessly versatile they are!

I added two dies, a butterfly and the words With Sympathy. And I changed the palette from country-influenced folk art colors to muted shades of blue-purple, amethyst, and navy.

9-20-2015-B

Butterflies have long symbolized the fragility and brevity of life so I chose them for the sympathy card. But butterflies are also a symbol of lightness and happiness, equally appropriate for sending good wishes to a newly-married couple or graduate so I positioned a pair on the Congratulations card as well.

Customize your cards!

*Change the sentiment, the color combination, the size and shape.

*Create a flat card instead of one with a fold and send along a Card Stand/Easel.

*Instead of butterflies, embellish with realistic flowers using dies from Susan Tierney-Cockburn’s Susan Garden Collection.

*Instead of realistic flowers, embellish with bold graphic flowers, berry branches or simple leaves using dies by Els.

*Mix in purchased embellishments.

*Take a more minimalist approach and stick with monochromatic or single-color tone-on-tone like the two cards shown below.

9-20-2015-C

9-20-2015-D[1]

Instructions:

  1. Follow the basic general instructions from September 6 to create the cards. All cardstock elements are die cut from cardstock backed with double sided adhesive sheet. Both cards are A2 size.
  1. For the sympathy card, cut the words With Sympathy a second time from Blue Velvet Adhesive Sheet. Position the Velvet words slightly offset over the cardstock words to add dimension. (The cardstock words act as a pale shadow.)
  1. Die cut 3 Amethyst Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz butterflies for With Sympathy card, 2 butterflies for Congratulations card.
  1. Emboss butterflies in the Swirly Curves embossing folder. Lightly sand to reveal the silver color core of the Shimmer Sheetz. Gently bend butterfly wings upward.
  1. Secure the butterflies to the card front using a tiny sliver of a Tombow Power Adhesive Tab on the back of the body section, allowing the wings to remain dimensional and free of adhesive. (Use non-stick scissors to cut the Power Tab strips.) The wings will flatten when the card is in an envelope, but will pop right back up when it is removed! *Reminder: You must use a metal adaptor plate or Sizzix Precision Base Plate for die cutting Shimmer Sheetz, with the cutting side of the die facing the metal and the Shimmer Sheetz in between. The rest of the cutting plate “sandwich” is the same as usual for your machine.

9-20-2015-E

TIP: Make extra butterflies to use on gift tags, barrettes, and other projects. Shimmer Sheetz is garment-quality Mylar (colorfast and waterproof) so you could sew or glue butterflies onto T-shirts, scarves, and other items. If using glue, Beacon GemTac is highly recommended. Use florist’s wire when attaching Shimmer Sheetz butterflies (or other shapes) to plants or flower arrangements.

ECDCandleBlock

Hi everyone,

It’s Frances Byrne here. It’s the 1st of October, which means there are only 85 days until Christmas! Today I am sharing a Christmas themed Block Card which folds flat to be mailed and can be used as a card or an ornament or centre piece if you so desired. Of course this style of card can be used for any occasion. One thing that won’t change when you create these is that the Garden Patch – 1 3/8″ & Mini Daffodils die set is perfect for your layering squares on this card.

Here is how I created the card:

diagram 1

1. Creating the base of the card

  • From red card cut a piece of card 12 inches x 4.5 inches and another piece that is 1 inch x 4.5inches.
  • Score the 12 inch x 4.5 inch card at 1.5 inch intervals in both directions so that you get 1.5 inch squares all over the card.
  • Using the diagram above as a guide, cut along all solid lines. This will remove 4 squares from your card and will give you 3 pieces that are loose on 3 sides.

diagram 2

  • Score the 1 inch x 4.5 inch piece of card in half so it measures ½ inch x 4.5 inch.
  • Attach the small piece of card to the end of your bigger piece of card so that it now measures 12.5 inches x 4.5 inches. (on the diagram below it is on the left side)
  • Fold along the score lines shown in red in the diagram above. This would be the first score line after the 1 inch piece was added, the 4 score lines which are associated with the “loose’ pieces in the middle and the two score lines at the middle back.
  • Fold the small piece at the left end of the larger piece under (so it is now flush with the end. Turn the card over so that the back is now facing you and apply adhesive to the top of the thin piece of card we just folded over. Fold the opposite side (right side in diagram) over so it is flush with the edge. (left side in diagram)

diagram 3

  • Apply adhesive to the two “loose” pieces on the top  right hand side of the card and are on the bottom layer (dark coloured on diagram below) and then fold them down so that they adhere to the panels to the left of them. You should be left with something which looks like the diagram on the below.

diagram 4

  • Now your block card is ready to stand up using the pre folded score lines (red lines in diagram above).

ECDCandleBlock2

2. Decorating –

  • Use the large grid die from the Garden Patch – 1 3/8″ & Mini Daffodils die set and die cut three grids from designer paper. TIP – before die cutting the designer paper adhere Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back of the designer paper which will make applying the squares to the card easier.
  • Attach the 1 3/8 inch squares to each of the 1 1/2 inch scored squares of the card. (You may prefer to do this step before you stand your card up). It is optional whether you add designer paper squares to the base of the card, you could just cut a card 1 3/8 inch x 4 3/8 inch and adhere that to the base … this would be where you would write any messages.

3. From the Candle Die die cut the following:

  • 1 x Candle from white card which has Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape on the front.
  • 1 x Candle Drip from white card which has Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape on the front.
  • 10 x Holly Leaves from green card. Sponge leaves with green ink after die cutting.
  • 10 x Fern Leaves from green card
  • 5 x Flower from red card
  • 5 x Flower Centre from yellow card
  • 1 x Large Candle Flame from Yellow Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz
  • 1 x Medium Candle Flame from Orange Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz which has Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape on the back.
