Ladies Hats for Mom & Me

May 23, 2016

Hi everyone, it’s Annette Green here today with some sweet little hats I’ve created using Susan’s Garden Notes dies,  ribbon, and plain hats. I made these for my Mom and me this past Mother’s Day. We were invited to a ladies tea/luncheon and were encouraged to wear hats. Neither my mom nor I had a pretty hat (just baseball caps and visors in my closet) so I decided to make our own custom ones. I’d love to share how easy they were to make.

1. Decide on a hat you would like to decorate. These came from the doll-making aisle of my local Hobby Lobby store. They are about 7 1/2″ in diameter and are very light weight.

2. Adhere several ribbon trims around the top using either fabric glue or hot glue. I mixed three different ribbons on each hat and added bows to the back.

3. Create three Anemone flowers and the leaves from the Garden Notes Anemone die. Follow along Susan’s YouTube video for detailed instructions for assembly of the Anemone.

4. Create three sunflowers and leaves from the Garden Notes Sunflower die. Follow Susan’s You Tube video for detailed instructions for assembly of the Sunflower.

5. Create a handful of mini Chrysanthemums using the Garden Patch 1-inch & Mini Daisy & Chrysanthemum die. I placed a penny in the photo for a size comparison. These little flowers make a nice filler when creating little bouquets. The centers are finished off with a small dot of pearl paint.

6. Adhere the flowers onto the hats using hot glue.

Because the hats are mesh, they are easy to attach to your hair with a few bobby pins. Here’s Mom and me getting ready for our luncheon. We had a lovely brunch with tea and finger foods, then spent the rest of the day shopping, and yes, we wore our hats all day. Everywhere we went, we received many nice comments. Mom loved her hat so much she said she was going to wear it to dinner with my Dad that evening. My hat now hangs on the wall as a sweet memory of our lovely day together.

this is so perfect for someone who doesn’t wear hats too often. I recently went to a tea so wish I had seen this a bit earlier. I will be on the lookout for those hats.

Your hats are so cute. I love the sheerness (probably not a word.) of them so it’s really all about the flowers. Those bouquets are so sweet.

Annette, this is the sweetest project I’ve ever seen, made all the more sweeter by the story and the photo of you and your Mom. Those flowers are amazing!
