Susan’s Garden Designer Challenge – July

July 11, 2017

Hi everyone!

Welcome to our first Susan’s Garden Design Team Designer Challenge. Some of you asked for this challenge earlier in the year and we are so happy to finally be able to include it.

Susan Tierney-Cockburn designs flower dies that are realistic, just like those we find in nature, and they are scaled so they can be used together in bouquets. For our first challenge let’s celebrate with flowers! Create a card/project anything you want as long as it includes one or more of Susan’s Garden flowers.

For our Challenge today we are giving away a Susan’s Garden Prize Pack which includes: Garden Notes Square Window & Flower Box, Sunflower 2 and an All Metal Tool Kit to 3 winners.

To enter, simply leave a comment on this blog post below and answer this question: What  is your favorite flower from the Garden Notes collection?

We will select 3 lucky winners in a random drawing.

The winners will be announced on Friday, July 14th, here on the Elizabeth Craft Designs blog.

Now let’s take a look at the wonderful creations our talented Design Team have created for the Challenge this month. For more information about the cards, click on the designer’s name under each card to be taken to the designer’s blog post and open the project in a new window.

Selma Stevenson starts us off this month with a colorful card featuring Garden Notes – Grapevine Wreath and Garden Notes – Lily 2 from Susan’s Garden using White, Dark Chocolate, Sunflower and True Green Soft  Finish Cardstock. Selma used ModaScrap’s Romantic Corner & Pair of Leaves 1 die sets and the Celebrate sentiment from Els van de Burgt Studio. To create her card, Christine used the Garden Notes Dahlia from Susan’s Garden along with the A Way with Words – Sending Hugs Kisses and Corners 1 from Els van de Burgt Studio. She also used White Soft Finish Cardstock and PanPastels Set 3.

Anita Kejriwal has used the Garden Notes – Alstroemeria from Susan’s Garden to create the beautiful card above. Anita also used papers from ModaScrap Sweet Vintage Rose Paper Pack as well as sentiments from the Dreams Sentiments Clear Stamp set from Joset Designs.

  • Janet Cobb July 11, 2017 at 12:44 pm

They’re all lovely but I think I have to choose the yellow day lily! Gorgeous! The cards are just beautiful.

  • Dianna Weaver July 11, 2017 at 12:42 pm

Really…how do you pick just one to love? They are all just beautiful and so well proportioned for display on a card! I think I would have to pick the peony, it is a flower that does not grow in the South.

  • Megan July 11, 2017 at 12:39 pm

The marigold is my favorite. But I love all of them.

  • Bobbie Lathrop July 11, 2017 at 12:36 pm

  • Sue Wagner July 11, 2017 at 12:19 pm

All the cards are gorgeous! I just watched a video that Susan did on her Garden Notes Dahlia, she has a touching story, and I would love to try making it.

  • Monika Gilliham July 11, 2017 at 12:18 pm

Do I have to pick only one? They’re all gorgeous! Guess it would be roses, lilies and sunflowers.

  • Val July 11, 2017 at 12:18 pm

My Favorite is the dahlia. Such a dramatic card can be made with this.

  • Martha Hazevoet July 11, 2017 at 12:14 pm

My favourite is definitely the tulip.

  • Karen C July 11, 2017 at 12:11 pm

All of these cards are very nice. My favorite set of Susan’s flowers is the marigold, with the runner up being the sunflower. I love doing 3D flowers, add color, veining, some fuzzy glitter in center, some shaping of the petals and you can have a real looking flower. All made with TLC!

  • Jean Chaney July 11, 2017 at 12:10 pm

Oh, I just love how real the lily looks! It is a “must have” for sure!

  • Melosie Luttrell July 11, 2017 at 12:10 pm

I have several dies by Susan and enjoy using them all. Of the cards you displayed I think the dahlia is gorgeous. I enjoy mostly the violets and the Zinnias.I love the fact that the flower petals are connected in the dies and it is easy to assemble. Thank you Susan for such beautiful flowers. To be able to look at Gods beautiful creations and make such realistic dies for us to play with. You always challenge me and make me salivate over your newest designs.

  • Kathy Robinson July 11, 2017 at 11:53 am

  • Becky Lunetta July 11, 2017 at 11:44 am

I love the sunflowers, which I have from Susan’s previous company, but these from ECD are on my wish list! My othe favorite are the roses which I’ve used to decorate a “competitors” box!

  • Clare Curcio July 11, 2017 at 11:43 am

All of the flowers look so realistic, they’re amazing! Beautiful creations by everyone!

  • Theresa Wright July 11, 2017 at 11:41 am

  • Kathleen Adams July 11, 2017 at 11:36 am

Wow, all the projects are truly beautiful. Picking a favorite is really tough. I’m going to say the “Sunflower” and “Dahlia” 2nd. I’ve really have enjoyed making Susan’s beautiful flowers.

  • Karin Barnes July 11, 2017 at 11:34 am

I absolutely love all the samples. I have to say the daisy is my favorite. I have made several cards using the daisy 1. They are so realistic and being low profile mailable…a real plus,
ECD is my Go-To die for card making.

  • Marsha D July 11, 2017 at 11:34 am

I love these dies from Susan’s Garden. My favorite one so far that I own is Rose 3 (but I do wish there was a video to see how to use all the pieces properly). Out of these samples today, my favorite is the dahlia (one on my wish list).

  • Leslie Mattern July 11, 2017 at 11:32 am

The lilies just finished blooming in our yard….so the lilies 2 reminds me of that…so for now that will be my favorite flower. Flowers are too hard to pick a favorite…I think that is why I have bought sooooo many flower dies…. and ……I love seeing all the card making ideas for flowers.

  • Barbara Martin July 11, 2017 at 11:31 am

I am new to your site. Have been doing hydrangea since purchasing mine. Love all the things you do with these flowers. I like the sunflower the best. Keep up the good work

  • Christine Slak July 11, 2017 at 11:30 am

My favorite flower from the Garden Notes collection is the pansy. They bring back fond memories of the wild ones tat grew in my Grandmother’s back yard!

  • Barbara Gardner July 11, 2017 at 11:30 am

I love the elegance and simplicity of the single white Dalhia. It was a difficult decision as all the flowers and cards are outstanding!

  • Pam Steger July 11, 2017 at 11:30 am

Oh, these are all so beautiful. I find it very hard to choose which flower I love best from Susan’s garden but if you make me choose I guess I’ll go with the hydrangea.

  • Karin Barnes July 11, 2017 at 11:29 am

All of the samples are absolutely beautiful.
Susan’s dies are so realistic and being low profile easy to mail. I love working with her collection creating beautiful 3 dimensional cards.
I especially LOVE the daisy card and have made several using the Daisy 1 die.
ECD have become my favorite Go-To Dies.

  • Carolyn Fine July 11, 2017 at 11:25 am

The sunflowers 2 are my favorite. My mom grew sunflowers when I was young. They remind me of her. Love the perils.

  • Barbara Worthington July 11, 2017 at 11:24 am

My favorite flower has to be the hydrangea. Being brought up in New York over 50 years ago, I remember the beautiful hydrangeas in my grandmother’s garden. We would go to her house while waiting for the bus and she would cut a bouquet for our teacher. Needless to say , our teachers loved us, I alter the different color paper with distress crayons so that when the flowers are die cut they area different shades. Beautiful and so realistic.

  • Vicki B July 11, 2017 at 11:23 am

All of those flowers are such beautiful creations! I don’t think I could begin to make them look like that. If I did I don’t think I could bring myself to give them away. AWESOME JOB!

  • Amy Cooley July 11, 2017 at 11:20 am

The peony flowers are my favorite from this collection. Thanks for sharing these beautiful peojects!

  • irma martens July 11, 2017 at 11:18 am

    i love all the flowers.
    but the sunflower the most.

  • Maria July 11, 2017 at 11:18 am

I’d have to say my favorites are a toss up between the sunflower 2 (you can make so many flowers from it) and the tuberous begonia (they’re just so cool). I know you’re only supposed to have one favorite, but it took me too long to just narrow it down to those two, I had to list them both.

  • Kathy Robinson July 11, 2017 at 11:16 am

I just had a wonderful thought, upon making my hydrangeas on a piece of paper before I transfer to my card. I add a tiny bit of perfume to the flowers. Does not have to be a lot. Just a tiny bit. Like the gorgeous roses!

  • Charline H July 11, 2017 at 11:14 am

Every one of the flowers are beautiful and unique so it’s hard to pick a favorite. My father grew beautiful roses and dahlias so I would have to go with one of those. Thank you for the chance to win.

  • Dolores Kilcoyne July 11, 2017 at 11:14 am

The Tuberous Begonia is exquisite. If you must choose a favorite this is it.

  • Twila Price July 11, 2017 at 10:20 am

I am torn between the day lily and the lily, because I love those flowers! I would probably go with the day lily if I had to pick just one, because I know there are so many colors in nature that you could make a different one every day for a week or longer….

  • karen wade July 11, 2017 at 10:19 am

I love the lily2 there are so many ways to use it. if you wet it and pinch the ends it gives it a whole different look. the Jasmine is a great one as well, lets face it I love them all and use them over and over

  • Deb J July 11, 2017 at 10:13 am

What a hard question. There are five flowers that call my name, Jasmine, (in nature I love them for their scent), Magnolia, Peony, Gerbera (they always make me happy ) and the Dogwood ( my province’s official flower) . If I was pushed to name only one, it would be the Peony in real life but the Gerbera in my paper crafting. You can make the Gerbera in so many different colours and they are just fun to make.

All of these show the talent and Time these artists are willing to put into their creations. They spend hours, often to give the finished piece to someone else.WOW!!! Personally I love the sunflower die but I think I have used the pointsetta design the most. I’ll just have to keep on cutting and playing with paper forever and use all of the flowers.

I must admit that I do make flowers like these on occasion but only do this for people I know will appreciate the cards A LOT . Not sure if it is because I don’t do flowers much but they take me a long long time to make. 🙂

All the ladies on the design team did an exceptional job. If I had to pick a favorite it would be the Alstroemeria that Anita Kejriwal used in her card. Her flowers look so delicate and realistic and I love the deconstructed look of the card and how the individual elements just work. The drops were such a nice touch. I am a real fan of the Garden notes collection. The first time I saw a card made with the flowers I was blown away. The dies allow even the most novice crafter to make realistic flowers using Susan Tierney-Cockburn’s method to shape and color them.
