Purple Jumpers in a Layout and Card

September 3, 2017

Hello there! It’s Riikka here today guesting with two projects!

Autumn weather means jumpers need to be taken out of the closets so I thought to make a layout and a card using the fun jumper die from Joset’s winter collection. I chose to use purple as my color palette this time in honor of the velvet nights autumn also brings.

The layout is about my daughters although there’s just a picture of my older daughter in there. It always amazes me how they both have such a strong own style at such a young age. I mean I found my style when I was over 20! So I made the page to celebrate that they have their own style also in the hopes that it will stay that way when they grow up.

If you want to see how the layout was made, please see the steps below! And if you want to see how they turn into a card form, please scroll even further down.

Step 1. First apply a layer of gesso to your background. Apply the gesso to the area where your composition is goin to be, not all across the page. Use a big brush and let the brush strokes show on the edges of the gessoed area. Let dry or use a heat tool to dry.

Step 2. Apply color on top. You can use watercolor or mist but go for a watercolor like look. If you have trouble of getting the color to look good and a bit haphazard, use a piece of plastic to help. Press the plastic to wet color and then “stamp” it across the focal point area. Let dry or dry.

Step 3. Add layers to your background using a stencil. Follow the color scheme you have chosen and first apply ink through your chose stencil. Don’t clean it but apply Modeling Paste directly after. That way you tint the paste with the same ink and get almost a marble looking effect on some of the shapes. After using the Modeling Paste, clean the stencil well.

Step 4. Continue with the background work. Let previous layer dry or use a heat tool to dry. Then add some stamping to the background. Notice how you can use the stamp just partially and create texture rather than stamping so that all the words are readable.  Add also some acrylic paint splashes to the background.

Step 5. Cut a couple of jumpers out of purple papers. Mix the two sets of jumpers so that the cuffs, collar and hem are of the other color. Layer the pieces on top of each other and adhere. Cut also some hangers and color their hooks paler with diluted gesso.

Step 6. Start making your composition. Take a piece of twine and run it across the page. Staple the twine in place and start building a clothes line. Adhere the hangers to the jumpers as well and one on top of the photo. Use foam dots to “hang” the jumpers and adhere them in place as well as the photo.

Step 7. Embellish your page. Use the stamps to add a piece of the title to the page and build the rest out of foam letters. Cut some star bursts out of white cardstock and use those and sequins sprinkled around the page.

Step 8. Finish your page with some hand drawn doodles in white and hand written journaling. This gives your project an individual, unique look as no body draws the same way or has your handwriting.

There you have the steps for the layout! Just eight easy steps and you have created an unique background and made a personal project! But the same steps can be used to make a card, too. Naturally they may need some editing, like adding a photo or writing the journaling, but you can still make similar background, the same clothes line and decorate with sequins.

The background in this card is made the same way although I used patterned pattern instead of the solid one. There’s the gesso, the mist and the stenciled layers. There’s also the stamped texture using the sayings stamp and the splashes and sequins. Naturally the smaller surface means a bit less space to work with the background layers, but you can still use the same ideas. You can also add the personal part in the card as you can write the greeting to the card yourself.

Thank you for stopping by today! I hope you gained some inspiration out of these projects! See you again next month!
