Winter Layout and Christmas Card by Riikka

November 12, 2017

Hello there! It’s Riikka here today with another guest project! Or actually two, as always. Today I have a double treat as there’s this layout with a step by step tutorial and a card with video tutorial! Both of the projects are done with a winter theme or vibe. Both of the projects have a blue, white, grey color scheme, white splashes, and snowflakes. I also tried to add the winter vibe using Silk Microfine Glitter as frost and twinkly snow.

The layout is about the last princess birthday my younger daughter had. It was almost two years ago. Since then she’s gotten more into football and skateboarding. The Elsa dress I did for her for that 5th birthday fit well with the winter theme well, and she’s also a child of winter.

I used the same steps or techniques in both the card and the layout. Let’s start with the layout and the step by step.

Step 1. Adhere a piece of patterned paper from the ModaScrap Viaggi Vintage Paper Pack on top of a piece of 12 x 12 Dove Gray Soft Finish Cardstock. Cut the paper about 1″ smaller than the background and use Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet to adhere the piece. This way the paper will stand up to more mixed media touches without warping.

Step 2. Next add some white gesso. I had an idea about the composition in my mind and I added the gesso mainly in the area whee the photo will be placed. The gesso represents snow, so try to make the edges as uneven as possible, letting the brushstrokes to show.

Step 3. Next add some glimmering stars on top, using the A Way with Stencils – Butterflies & Stars Stencil and Modeling Paste to make the dimensional stars. While the Paste is still wet, sprinkle the Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter on top. The glitter will stick to the wet Paste and create a frosty, shiny.

Step 4. Start the composition with a few patterned paper strips from the ModaScrap Viaggi Vintage Paper Pack. Die cut garlands from White Soft Finish Cardstock. As the photo will be placed on top of the garlands, cut some of them into shorter pieces and add the pieces on either side. No need to have these embellishments hidden underneath the photo!

Step 5. Time to add the photo and some paper layers to the layout! First add patterned papers underneath the photo and staple the layers together. Then add  the Entwined Circle frame on top of the layers and photo on top of that. Attach the photo to the stapled layers with a piece of Clear Double Sided Adhesive. Adhere the cluster to the page with foam dots.

Step 6. Now it’s time to start embellishing the layout. I added some paper flowers near the photo and also die cut some snowflakes from the Winter Sweater die set out of White Soft Finish Cardstock to embellish the page. I used a mix of large and small flowers to make the composition balanced.

Step 7. Next add the title.  Stamp the sentiment from the Dreams Sentiment Clear Stamp set onto  a piece of White Soft Finish Cardstock, die cut sentiment using one of the banners from the ModaScrap Stitched Fishtail Banners die set.  Adhere the banner to the side of the photo.

Step 8. To add more of a winter feel and frost to the layout adhere Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter to the top of the flowers and snowflakes by adding touches of Soft Gloss Gel in the blooms with a small brush and then sprinkling glitter on top.

Step 9. To finish the page stamp some stars to the layout using the stars from the Dream Sentiments Clear Stamp set. Stamp the stars using  embossing ink and emboss using white embossing powder. To give the page a more snowy feel add white splashes using white gesso. Add  journaling with a white pen.

Use the same steps to make the card below. Started by adhering a piece of patterned paper to the cardstock, then apply gesso and continued with Modeling Paste. The biggest difference between the two projects, except the size, is the use of thread in the card.

I tried to capture snowy, wintery feel in the card so it could be used as a Christmas greeting or just a winter greeting card. If you want to see how the card was made, please see the video below!

Thank you for visiting today! I hope you like these projects and find inspiration from these! See you again next month!

xoxo Riikka
