Galaxy Background Father’s Day Card

May 17, 2018

Hi there! It’s Elena today and I thought it would be fun to create a galaxy background for a Father’s Day card. The Take Time for You die set seemed like a great compliment to a space theme background since time and space go hand in hand. Plus, it’s a great message for Dad, who likely doesn’t take enough time for himself, right? Here’s how I made the card:

Galaxy Background Father's Day Card

Step 1 – Cut a piece of watercolor paper to 5” x 7”. Place in a large box with scratch paper under it and spray randomly with Distress Resist Spray (DO NOT spray on your work surface as Distress Resist Spray will permanently stick to absolutely everything and ruin your surface!!!) to create a variety of tiny droplets and more medium sized droplets on the paper. Set aside to dry. Once dry, use Distress Inks in Mustard Seed and Carved Pumpkin applied with a blending tool to add splotches of color to the now dry watercolor background. Add additional splotches with Cracked Pistachio and Twisted Citron. Finally fill in the majority of the remaining space with Shaded Lilac Distress Ink.

Step 2 – Place the watercolor paper in the box again, but this time remove the sprayer from the Distress Resist bottle and use the end of it to add bigger droplets on top of the colored areas, remembering that these droplets will allow the color underneath to show when the galaxy is completed. When happy with the amount of larger droplets, set aside to dry again. Once dry, take Distress Ink in Chipped Sapphire and blend on to the watercolor paper using a blending tool, slightly overlapping the edges of the colored splotches to create the galaxy look while covering over the rest of the watercolor paper. Continue darkening the galaxy by adding layers of Dusty Concord and Black Soot as well. If necessary, take the ink directly to the paper to achieve the darkness of space in certain areas. Lightly wipe over the Distress Resist droplets with a paper towel after adding each color to keep them clean and so you can really see the resist effect that creates the look of stars.  Continue this process until you are happy with the darkness and colors in your galaxy. Finally, lightly dab the Resist droplets with a damp cloth or baby wipe to really clean them off and bring out the stars. Be careful to avoid touching much of the ink as the dampness in the cloth or baby wipe may cause the Distress Inks to react and possibly lift or run.

Step 3 – Create an A7 sized card base by cutting a piece of heavy weight black cardstock to 10” x 7” and folding in half. Die cut one set of clock hands, one chain die, one detailed watch layer, and one word die from the Take Time for Yourself die set from heavy weight black cardstock. Cut one detailed watch layer die from 85 lb. white soft finish cardstock and one solid watch layer die from metallic gold cardstock. Die cut 2 small hearts and 1 small star out of metallic gold cardstock. I used punches. Die cut ‘happy’, fathers’ and “day’ out of the metallic gold cardstock using the Words 3 – Happy Holidays Die Set. Die cut the second largest die from the Stitched Rectangles Die Set out of 85 lb. White Soft Finish Cardstock. Trim the galaxy panel down to 6 ¾” x 4 ¾”.

Step 4 – Assemble the card by adding 10 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back of the galaxy panel and the white Stitched Rectangle. Adhere the galaxy panel in the center of the front of the black card base. Adhere the Stitched Rectangle into the center of the inside of the card base so you can write a message. Use liquid glue to adhere the ‘happy’, ‘fathers’ and ‘day’ words in the upper half of the white stitched rectangle on the inside of the card.  Trim the clock face out of the white and black detailed watch layers die cut in Step 4 and then trim any uneven edges from around the outside edge of the white clock face and the inside edges of the black watch body. Adhere the watch together by adding liquid adhesive to the back of the black watch body and adhering it on top of the solid gold watch die cut. Add liquid adhesive to the back of the white clock face and add into the center of the solid gold watch die cut and the black body layer. Use liquid adhesive on the clock hands and add them to the face at 6:17, to note the date for Father’s Day in 2018. Once the watch is dry, add 6 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back of the watch. Use liquid adhesive to glue down the words “Make Time for Yourself” die cut in Step 4 into the upper third of the card front on top of the galaxy panel. Add the black chain die cut to the end of the watch body by sliding it over the holder using the slit in the die and add liquid adhesive to the back. Remove the backing from the tape on the back of the watch and adhere in place on the card front in the lower left of the galaxy panel. Finally, adhere one small gold heart near the words in the upper left, adhere the gold star under the words in the middle right, and adhere the last gold heart in the lower right of the card front.

Enjoy!

This is a beautiful card…the background is awesome! The watch and chain are perfect for a masculine card. I’m going to try this and see if mine turns out as great. Thanks for Sharing
