Holiday Mixed Media Canvas

August 17, 2018

Hey Friends!  It’s EK, and I’m sneaking in today to share a little mixed media canvas I created for the upcoming holiday season.  Last year during the holiday season, I started putting up small holiday theme canvases throughout the house.  It was a really fun way to decorate for Christmas instead of just putting up the tree.  With the new release of Joset’s new holiday dies, I wanted to create some new mini canvases, and thought the new Santa’s Sleigh was perfect for this project.

Step One:  Die Cut the sleigh die out of Wood Effects printed paper and Silver Gray Soft Finish Cardstock.  Trim the metal portion of the sleigh off the silver tray paper sleigh and adhere it to the wooden sleigh using Kids Choice Glue.

Step Two:  Using Distress Ink, distress the sleigh with Walnut Stain and the metal portion of the sleigh with Hickory Smoke.

Step Three:  Die cut the ModaScrap Christmas Flower die set using Brick Red Soft Finish Cardstock and Olive Twist Soft Finish Cardstock.

Step Four:  Distress the green leaves of the Christmas Flower using Mowed Lawn Distress Ink.

Step Five:  Shape the green leaves using Susan’s Garden 4pcs all metal tool set and Molding Pad.

Step Six:  Repeat step 4 and 5, this time with the red leaves using Candied Apple Distress Ink.

Step Seven:  Using Kids Choice Glue, assemble the Christmas Flowers.  Add some Green Pollen to the center of the Christmas Flower.

Step Eight: Pull out a 6×6 inch canvas and another piece of Wood Effects printed paper trimmed to 6×6 inches.

Step Nine:  Coat the canvas in Soft Matte Gel and adhere the printed paper.  Add another coat of Matte Gel onto of the printed paper.  Let dry.

Step Ten:  Apply a coat of Molding Paste around the edges of the canvas to allow a 3D snow bank effect.  Let dry.

Step Eleven:  Adhere both the Christmas Flowers and Sleigh to the canvas using Kids Choice Glue.

***Here is where I realized the canvas was going to need more than I had planned.  I realized adding some gifts from the Santa’s Sleigh die set would help finish this project.

Step Twelve:  Die cut the gifts from the Santa’s Sleigh die set using three different papers from the Relax in the Garden Patterned Paper pack.  Die cut the ribbons using 85lb White Soft Finish Cardstock that has Clear Double Sided Adhesive on the front.

Step Thirteen:  Add shadows to the gifts with gray alcohol markers (I used copics).

Step Fourteen:  Add Silk Microfine Glitter to the ribbons to coordinate with the papers.  I used Leaf Green, Copper Rose and Copper Silk Microfine Glitter.  Adhere the ribbons to the gifts. (Note: Polish the glitter into the adhesive using your finger to bring out the maximum sparkle).

Step Fifteen:  Adhere the gifts into the sleigh using Kids Choice Glue.

Step Sixteen:  Die cut the sentiment from the new Words 5- Winter Wishes die set out of 85lb White Soft Finished Cardstock that has Clear Double Sided Adhesive on the front.  Add Bright Cranberry Silk Microfine Glitter to the sentiment.  Adhere it to the canvas using Kids Choice Glue and adding a slight curve to the placement.

I just love how three dimensional the canvas ended up.  Also I love that it has a great holiday vibe without being too ‘hit you over the head’ Christmas.

Thanks for peeking in today to see my mixed media canvas.  Have you started preparing your holiday crafts yet?  What are you most excited to make this year?  I am going to add a couple more small canvases to my collection before it is time to put up the tree.
