Shimmer Sheetz Sunday: Ten Gift Ideas

November 4, 2018

By Judi Kauffman

Need some easy, fast gift ideas? Feel like getting ahead with stocking stuffers, presents for friends and family? My recommendation: Enjoy a lazy browse through the Elizabeth Craft Designs blog archive and you’ll find MANY Shimmer Sheetz embellished boxes, tissue boxes, journals, notepads, and trays, plus cards, ornaments, jewelry, and more. Each tutorial includes a supply list and instructions!

Some of the dies and many of the embossing folders I used may be discontinued, but they could be right there in your collection. (I hope so, but if not it proves that if you see something you like it’s a good idea not to wait too long to shop…) And it’s easy to make substitutions. Elizabeth Craft Designs has plenty of flowers and snowflakes.

Use these project photos from the last three years to help you get inspired. Have an old tray, tin or box that needs a facelift? Get it out and turn it into something unique and special. A bit of paint or some alcohol inks, Shimmer Sheetz and Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet or Tape, a die or two, will be all you need.

The projects are so simple that you may not even need to find the instructions! For example: The tree (the only project that was not a blog project…) is a series of wooden strips randomly nailed together, painted green and embellished with embossed and lightly sanded Peridot Shimmer Sheetz. Ornaments on the tree hang from pushpins. The red tray is a dollar store “find” with a pieced Shimmer Sheetz circle and embossed strips decorating the interior.

Flat Shimmer Sheetz ornaments are easy to mail and make a great alternative to a holiday card. They’re lightweight and durable!

Cute and good idea, but I have these sheets and find them hard to cut and hard to glue in place. Got any good ideas for my problems? What am I doing wrog? Edna Burgess

Thank you, Edna! There are several ways to hold Shimmer Sheetz in place. First – and fastest, is double-sided adhesive tape or sheet. If you die cut it with the adhesive sheet on the back, it needs to be a brand that is thiin and has a thin release sheet (which is why I strongly recommend and endorse Elizabeth Crtaft Designs’ “Clear Double Sided Adhesive SheeT/TAPE”). Nithing wet, therefore no drying time. If I want dimension on something like a card front, I use foam tape or dots. If I want dimension AND a super strong hold I use Tombow Xtreme Adhesive Tabs (they hold several ounces so they’re great for mixed media projects and things that hang vertically). I cut the Tabs with non-stick scissors when I need only a small snippet – they’re so strong you don’t alway6s need an entire Tab.) If you want to adhere Shimmer Sheetz to fabric (like flowers on a tote bag or T-shirt, go for Beacon Adhesives’ GemTac glue. It’s formulated for holding a non-porous surface (the SS) to a porous one (the fabric).
      As to cutting:
A metal adaptor plate or Big Shot machine with Precision Base Plate is REQUIRED for die cutting Shimmer Sheetz. Inside the machine’s usual cutting sandwich, do the following: Metal plate, Shimmer Sheetz (face up if you are cutting a piece that has been embossed or ink-altered, or backed with adhesive sheet and there is a ‘right side’ and ‘back side’), then the cutting die with the cutting side facing DOWN! Be sure to take advantage of the little pokey holes in the dies when removing the die cut shape from the die. Simple shapes are easier than more complicated ones.
You can also easily hand-cut Shimmer Sheetz and cut it with standard dies and electronic cutters.
Please write again if you have more questions!
