A Way With Words Els van de Burgt Studio Soft Finish Cardstock

Be Not Afraid

February 27, 2019

Hello!!! It’s Wanda here today, sharing an idea of how to use any of the “spray” dies in the A Way With Words collection. I’ve used the Butterfly Spray (from the Butterfly & Stars Spray set) for my project today. This idea has been roaming about my mind for a couple of weeks and I needed to give it a try. I’m really pleased with the result!!!

To begin I cut a piece of 110# Soft Finish Cardstock to a 6″ square. I then added really light pencil lines from corner to corner and across and down at the halfway points. This gives you 8 lines or 8 spaces to use as a guide for die cutting.

Next I used a Stitched Circle die to cut a circle from the middle of my paper. This makes it easier to place the dies for cutting.

Place the die, putting the part of the die you want to cut on top of the paper and the part of the die you don’t want to cut through the hole and under the paper. Use a piece of removable tape to hold the die in place.

Run this through your die cutting machine, going only far enough to cut the design on the front of the paper and then go in the reverse direction to get your paper out of the machine. The first time I cut, I ran my piece all the way through the machine but it left marks where the die was behind the paper.

Continue placing and cutting the spray. Here I’m just using the larger end of the spray to cut on every other line. You could choose to line your die up in the open areas between the lines for a slightly different look.

After finishing the first 4 cuts, I then did the in-between lines using the smaller end of the spray.

And here is my piece with all the butterflies cut. Yes, that center looks ugly but we will be covering it up.

I erased all the pencil lines and then sponged ink around the edges.

I layered my Butterfly piece over another square cut to 6 1/8″. For this square I used a piece of Kraft Metallic card from the Jewels pack (Tim Holtz Idea-ology).

I stamped the quote (from the Where Flowers Bloom Clear Stamp Set) onto the textured side of 90# Soft Finish Cardstock using a stamp platform –– this allows me to stamp it multiple times to get a good image on the texture and to make it nice and dark. I die cut this with the Stitched Circle die that is one size larger than the die I used for the center.

Cut another circle with the next size larger Stitched Circle. Sponge ink around the edges of both circles. I used the same color as my Butterfly piece.

Layer both circles using Foam Tape and attach the stacked circles to the project with Foam Tape.

I then attached my complete piece to another square of 110# Soft Finish White, cut to 6 1/4″ square. This was just to make the whole piece a bit firmer.

You could choose to make this a large card for someone or even put it in a frame for a home decor piece (use one of the Happy Frame sets and size your project accordingly).

I hope you like this project and, if you have any of the Spray dies, you are inspired to try something like this!!!

Hugs, Wanda
