Shimmer Sheetz

Shimmer Sheetz Sunday: Cupcake and Cake Toppers

July 8, 2018

By Judi Kauffman

This tutorial is devoted to sweet treats and parties. And, yes. I ate all three fancy store-bought cupcakes after finishing the photos…one a day to prove myself capable of a modicum of self-restraint (I live near Georgetown Cupcake so I splurged), but I resisted the urge to bake or buy a cake on which to show the cake topper!

This project has many other options. Several are listed at the end of the instructions.

Here’s the how-to –

Step 1 – Choose Shimmer Sheetz in colors that match the party décor – two or more for the flowers, two or more for the leaves. Shown: Ruby Gemstone and Red Iridescent, Peridot Gemstone and Green Iridescent. Die cut one large and one small flower and two or three leaves for each cupcake topper. Die cut three or four flowers in each size, one Dashing Circle, and assorted leaves for each cake topper.

Reminder: A metal adaptor plate or the Big Shot machine and Precision Base Plate is REQUIRED for die cutting Shimmer Sheetz. Review Els van de Burgt’s YouTube tutorial if you are new to this technique.

Step 2 – Cut fancy paper drinking straws in half, one for each cupcake topper and two for the cake topper. Squeeze the cut end of each straw to flatten it. Using non-stick scissors, cut small snippets of Tombow Xtreme Adhesive Tabs to hold the flowers and leaves to the flattened end of the straw. Layer the smaller flower on top of the larger one; gently bend petals upward for extra dimension.

Optional: To make reusable toppers, instead of a paper straw use a washable plastic stir stick so the icing can be removed. Shimmer Sheetz is waterproof so stray bits of icing can be wiped off with a damp cloth.

Step 3 – Add an adhesive-backed gem to the center of each flower or use a tiny piece of Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape if the gems aren’t adhesive-backed.

Step 4 – For a cake topper, start with a Dashing Circle die in the desired size. Add a word or sentiment die cut from Velvet Adhesive Sheet in a coordinating color. Arrange and adhere flowers and leaves as shown or to suit your preference.

Optional: Instead of a Dashing Circle, use a different circle die or any other simple shape (hexagon, square, heart, star, rectangle). Elizabeth Craft Designs offers many wonderful choices.

Step 5 – Attach two half-straws. Add a second circle to cover the cut ends of the straws so the topper looks finish from the back.

Optional: Just like the cupcake toppers, to make the cake topper reusable, substitute washable plastic stir sticks for the paper straws.

What else? Glad you asked…

*Make place cards or napkin rings instead of cake and cupcake toppers.

*Create a floral crown for the guest of honor.

*Use feather-light Shimmer Sheetz flowers on invitations or thank you cards.

*Give party guests a small green potted plant with a floral topper that keeps on blooming!!!

…The possibilities are endless.
