Friendly Robins Card
By Judi Kauffman

3-12-2016-A

Hello, everybody, it’s Judi Kauffman, back as today’s guest designer. My card project was inspired by what I see out my window: a round-up of recently-arrived robins, at least a dozen at a time. Now that it’s warmer, it seems like our lawn has become their delicatessen. I hope one of the couples decides to stay and raise a family. We’ve had a nest under the deck at the back of the house for the last four years. One year I was here to see the fledglings fly for the first time. What a treat that was!

And what a nice bit of serendipity that another recent arrival, newly-released papers from BoBunny, included a sheet filled with you-know-what: Robins!

Fast & Easy Shimmer Sheetz Notepads
By Judi Kauffman

3-6-2016-A

I love it when life hands me a win-win. I needed to come up with a small handmade gift on short notice – I’d forgotten a friend’s birthday and had only half an hour before we were scheduled to meet for lunch. And I was also on deadline for my Elizabeth Craft Designs blog project. I took photos of the notepad before wrapping it and headed out the door!

I already had some paper-covered sticky notepad covers made. Add 10 minutes to the project if you are starting from square one (pun intended!).

Hello, Jeanette Horner here, sharing a card made for a dear friend of mine. She will celebrate her birthday on the first day of March. Happy Birthday, Kay! I hope you will enjoy this card as much as I did creating it. Spring is just around the corner. I can almost smell the flowers, can’t you?

Let’s  go!

The Nifty Nine

February 21, 2016

By Judi Kauffman

There was only one step in this project that was challenging: Naming it! I sent a photo of the nine Artist Trading Cards to my friend Susan and called her on the phone so we could do some brainstorming. I knew I wanted the word ‘Nine’ in the title. It was late in the afternoon, both of us were tired, and all we could come up with were adjectives like ‘notorious’ and ‘nefarious’ (too ‘negative’), ‘nice’ (too sweet), ‘notable’ and ‘noteworthy’ (felt a little pompous). We hung up. Ten seconds later she called back. “Nifty!” she exclaimed. Bingo. It’s official – they’re the Nifty Nine.

It all started with two sheets of peel-offs in gold and black and a piece of alcohol ink-altered Amethyst Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz. Each of the sticker sheets has eight large flowers, four small flowers, and ten half-inch leaves, enough to make lots more than nine ATCs, depending upon whether you use one or two flowers per card (or more!). Or you could try to stop at just one or two…I dare you! ATCs are like jelly beans – a bunch is more fun than just a couple.

As always, my projects are meant as a starting point because no two people will have the same collection of papers and embellishments. I used some ‘retired’ collage papers that I’ve had on hand for ages, but included recently-acquired bunny stickers. I mixed in a notary seal, a tiny flower-shaped gem, some ribbon, snippets of border peel-offs (some altered with alcohol inks), and words created with a label maker – things that might not be among your tools and supplies. If you do want to create the same look but can’t find papers with vintage photos, use old family photos or yard sale finds, pages from castoff books, sheet music, and such.

Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other

February 12, 2016

By Judi Kauffman

This is my first time posting as a guest designer for Susan’s Garden Club. I thought I’d show how versatile my friend Susan Tierney-Cockburn’s Garden Patch dies can be! Each one creates a gridded frame with rows of open squares – much like a window with panes, and the squares that come out of the openings can be used as well.

There are four choices in the Garden Patch series, each includes mini-size flowers or leaves as well as the grid. Two of the dies have six square openings, one has nine and one has sixteen. If you’re into squares, there’s a lot to play with and a lot to like.

Silver Spoons

Silver Spoons
By Judi Kauffman

SilverSpoonsCOne of my favorite yard sale finds is a tarnished silver spoon, once loved but now neglected and ready to be rescued. I rarely pay more than a dollar or two because these days nobody likes to polish silver, but I find it relaxing and the end result is well worth the work.

When I spied Karen Burniston’s Cup Pop Stand die set in the new release I was drawn first and foremost to the spoon (though the cup and saucer, steam, embossing pattern and coffee bean were incredibly appealing, too!). I’ve had a chance to play with all of the dies in the set, but it is still the spoon that has captivated me most.

I made three cards with silver spoons. The first, shown above, pays homage to those tarnished spoons I rescue. The different patterns on the handles were created with embossing folders and brought to life with a mix of black and silver alcohol inks. The other two, shown below, incorporate Karen’s new Coffee Stencil and Coffee Bean Embossing Folder, as well as die cut beans. The card bases for the coffee bean cards were cut from rescued manila folders, giving them the nice trio of scored lines down the left edge!

How about tucking a coffee shop gift card or an invitation to stop over for a cup of joe inside one of these cards? I’m going to frame the one with the tarnished spoons. I think it would be fun to display in the kitchen.

Memories of You

Memories of You
By Jeanette Horner

Jeanette

This is made in memory of my son Mark who picked daffodils for me every spring. He was 82nd Airborne and passed in 1995.

Surrounding a special photo with Susan Tierney-Cockburn’s realistic paper flowers is a wonderful way to create something to cherish or give as a gift. I chose an oval, but you can use a square, rectangle, or circle for the picture opening and whatever flowers are most meaningful. There are Grapevine Wreaths available in three shapes, and to cut the opening there are Fitted Ovals, Squares, Circles and Rectangles as well.

Instructions:

1. Cut White Soft Finish Cardstock to 5” x 7”. Continue Reading

Shimmer Sheetz CONFETTI Cards & Earrings

January 17, 2016

Hello, Everyone – It’s Judi Kauffman, back as today’s guest designer with some projects that I hope you’ll find interesting and fun to make: Shimmer Sheetz CONFETTI Cards & Earrings!

Just like the calendars I’ve posted for the December Designers’ Challenge and here on the Elizabeth Craft Designs blog on December 3, these projects incorporate the leftover bits that fall out of the Ribbons 1 dies (the negative shapes that are all too often tossed into the trash). As you can see from the cards, shown in the photo above, I also used the ribbon strips. For the earrings, shown in photos below, I used only the small pieces, pieces I have used before as ‘faux staples’ and have now given a second name: CONFETTI!

CARDS:

Because no two people will have the same collection of papers and embellishments, use my cards as a source of inspiration to jump start your own creations. Instead of a step-by-step, here’s the basic design strategy:

Decide what size card you want to make and create a collage sized to fit the front. Use die cut Shimmer Sheetz shapes (circles, squares, ovals, rectangles), ribbon strips, and the ‘CONFETTI’ (all die cuts backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape before cutting) mixed with randomly torn and cut pieces of paper in a color scheme and theme of your choosing.

Embellish with charms, coins, buttons, feathers or other low-relief elements. Glue the collage to the front of a contrasting card base. I chose to mix in lightly sanded Red Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz circles cut with the smallest dotted edge circle in the Stitched Circles die set, one of the Corners 1 dies cut rom Gold Metallic Shimmer Sheetz altered with black StazOn. I picked the circle because it repeats the shape of the Asian coins. A side note: Shimmer Sheetz is difficult to photograph, but the Red Iridescent color is an almost exact match for the red in the calligraphy-filled Asian paper.

The close-ups below give you a sense of how I incorporated the CONFETTI.

Confetti G

EARRINGS:

Shimmer Sheetz jewelry is impressive, very easy to make, super lightweight. It’s a great gift and so much fun to wear. (I sometimes tuck extra pairs of earrings into my purse so I can surprise people who compliment what I’m wearing!)

All 3 pairs of earrings are die cut from a double layer of Shimmer Sheetz, Elizabeth Craft Designs thin Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape between the layers. The top layer was randomly dappled with alcohol inks before cutting, creating a textured-looking base that contrasts well with the CONFETTI.

Tip: If you don’t wear big, bold earrings, instead of Fitted or Stitched Circles or Squares use Els van de Burgt Studio Jewelry die sets to make more petite versions.

In addition to post-style earrings like the two pairs shown at the start of this blog post, you can also create dangling earrings like the ones in the photo below. Punch a 1/16” hole a scant 1/8” from the top of the shape for the earring wire.

Here’s a close-up of the back of the post-style earrings:

It’s Always Calendar Time, Continued…

January 3, 2016

Hello, everyone. It’s Judi Kauffman, back as today’s guest designer with a continuation of the Elizabeth Craft Designs December 2015 Designers’ Challenge. The theme was calendars and I couldn’t stop at just one. I kept going and designed three more! (I’ll include a photo of my Challenge calendar and a link to the instructions for it at the end of this post, right before the supply list.)

1-3-2016-A (2)

I decided to use up the random-width 6” long scraps of Els van de Burgt Studio ‘Through the Lens’ Metal, Wood, and Stone Series papers that were left after a flurry of card making.

1-3-2016-G (3)

As you can see from the three project photos shown above, the calendars are super simple. And they were fast and easy to make and customize.

In addition to the paper strips, I incorporated some new Els van de Burgt Studio dies – Stitched Rectangles and Corners 1, plus some previously-released favorites of mine – Hardware 1 – Hinges, Numbers & More 2, and some bits from Tags & More.

I made my own calendar pads with a simple graphics program, but they are available pre-made in a variety of sizes.

Because no two people will have the same scraps, your calendars will be unique and different from mine. Even if you cut identical strips, changing the progression of the pieces will yield an endless number of options, a new ‘look’ each and every single time!

My favorite is the one with the faux clipboard topper at the top of the rectangle with the calendar pad. I love the way the strips at the bottom look have the pattern oriented so that the wood pieces are vertical, anchoring the calendar, while all of the other strips are oriented so that the patterns have a distinct horizontal feel to them. This is intentional, not accidental, and the result of lots of arranging and rearranging the paper scraps.

Which is your favorite? Why? Please do some ‘show and tell’ – Post YOUR calendar on the Elizabeth Craft Designs Facebook Family page so we can see what you’ve made!

Instructions:

  1. Arrange a series of random-width 6” long strips of ‘Through the Lens’ papers. Rearrange till you like the progression and the way the colors and designs work together. For the projects shown, strips vary from 1” to 3” x 6”. Use smaller pieces to create 6” long strips if needed.
  1. Leaving a scant 1/8” border at the top and right, adhere the strips to a piece of 12” x 12” light tan (or other neutral) solid color cardstock so the strips touch, but do not overlap. As soon as the calendar is the desired length, cut off the extra cardstock at the left side and across the bottom edge, leaving the same scant 1/8” border. The shortest calendar measures 10” from top to bottom; the longest one measures 11.75”. (If you know you are making a calendar that is shorter than 11.75”, use a standard sheet of 8.5” x 11” cardstock instead of 12” x 12”.)

1-3-2016-C (2)

  1. Back Fire Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape. For each calendar, die cut a 3” x 4.25” Stitched Rectangle and two Hardware 1 – Hinges. Cut each of the Hinges in half along the score line. Be careful not to lose the six little circles that are part of the hinge die! You’ll need them in step 5. Lightly sand the rectangles and hinges, but NOT the little circles.

Reminder: A Metal Adaptor Plate is required for die cutting Shimmer Sheetz. Review Els van de Burgt’s YouTube video HERE if you are new to this technique.

1-3-2016-B (2)

  1. Optional: Also die cut a Fire Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz decorative reinforcement for the hanging hole and a clipboard topper (using any reinforcement from the Tags & More die series) or two decorative Corners 1 pieces. Lightly sand these pieces. Use the matching circle die or a .25” circle punch to cut a hole, centered, at the top of the calendar. Die cut the numbers ‘2016’ from Velvet Adhesive Sheet.

1-3-2016-E (2)1-3-2016-F (2)

  1. To complete the calendar, add the Stitched Rectangle, calendar pad, and any of these embellishments: Decorative reinforcement for the hanging hole, clipboard topper piece, Velvet numbers, Corners 1 pieces, sanded hinge pieces and the tiny un-sanded circles that fit into the hinge pieces (resembling nail heads). Refer to project photos for placement.
  1. More ideas:

*Instead of Hardware 1 – Hinges, use four Corners 1 pieces.

*Instead of mixing papers from all three packs, use only papers from one or two.

*Instead of random-width strips, use strips that are all the same size.

*Instead of strips measuring an inch or more, use narrower ones and leave 1/8” of the solid color cardstock visible between them.

*Instead of strips, use 1”, 2”, or 3” squares and create a mosaic background instead of stripes.

*Use black, brown or navy ink to distress the edges of all of the paper pieces before arranging them.
