Blue Hour

January 14, 2018

Hello there everyone, it’s Sanna here with a Guest Designer project. But first, I´d like to congratulate everyone on the design team. It’s a great team to be part of! I feel very honored to be able to stay here and share crafty projects with you as a guest blogger. Today is my turn to share the first project, so let’s get started.

One of my favorite die sets from the previous release is the Ornate Snowflakes. It is so very pretty. I’ve therefore created my project using that die set. Here is the layout I made:

Here are the steps for the layout:
1) Take a blue dotted 12×12 inch paper sheet from the Thinking about Polinesia paper pack and a sheet of dotted paper in a lighter shade from the Viaggi Vintage paper set. Cut the lighter paper into the size a little bit bigger than the color photo. Assembly onto the page and mark where that paper strip will be. Then cut a strip of paper from the back of the darker blue dotted paper away with a paper trimmer. This way you will have some more paper left for the next projects.
2) Now adhere the dotted papers onto a white cardstock piece. Cut in a slightly smaller size to create a white frame for the layout.
3) Die cut several sets of Ornate Snowflakes from White Soft Finish Cardstock and arrange them onto the page. After you are happy with the arrangement, adhere the photo and the snowflakes.
4) I had a 3D foam snowflake piece left over from a previous project, so I dipped it into glue and then added Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter to create lots of sparkle. After it dried, I adhered that piece on top of one of the bigger snowflakes.
5) Since only one glitter detail looks silly on the page, I grabbed some self-adhesive glitter fun foam and die cut the alphabets and the smaller snowflakes. Elizabeth Craft Designs dies cut really well thru the glitter foam!
6) Next I stamped some trees and stars from the Winter Bears stamp set and die cut them with the matching die set. After that I colored the images with a waterbrush and water-soluble crayons.
7) I finished the layout with some half pearls and glitter glue on the trees for additional sparkle, then added the faux stitching with a white gel pen around the edges and cut small strips of Soft Finish Cardstock which I inked with blue Distress Ink to match the layout colors and added my journaling onto the paper strips.
8) A little tip: There aren’t multiples of the same letter on the alphabet die, so you either have to cut the extras with more than one piece of foam OR you can cheat a little and create an “R” from a “P” and part of a “K” and a “U” from a “Q” and an “E” from an “F”. If you do this, you get the words BLUE HOUR and WINTER DAYS from only ONE die cut piece. (Otherwise, die cut twice and save the extras for other projects.)

After finishing the layout I had plenty of leftover pieces (see the video at the end for all details), so I used them up for these cards. This is how I did the first card:
1) The main piece of this card is a negative 3D foam piece with a snowflake pattern. Since it is adhesive, I could treat the surface with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter to create a nice and sparkly snowflake background for my winter themed card. It is mounted on the lighter dotted paper underneath. That creates a fun detail to the card.
2) Next I added two leftover trees (I die cut and colored more for the layout, just in case, and had 3 sets left over) as decoration on top and added a twine bow and a stamped and die cut Sentiments 1 word onto the right upper corner. This card was done with residue pieces in no time.
3) I found it easier to first die cut the “wishes” word from white cardstock and then stamp the word to the die cut piece. I tried it the other way around and it also worked, but it was easier to position the stamp on top of the die cut piece than the other way around.

For my second card the steps were even faster:
1) I adhered the dark blue dotted paper onto a white card base, then adhered one of the leftover snowflakes as a focal point to the card and decorated it with some half pearls.
2) Next I added some faux stitching around the edges with a white gel pen again and then stamped and die cut the sentiment. I inked it with blue Distress Ink to make it stand out a little better. And the card was done.

For the third card I used the negative alphabet foam sheet as my focal point. Here is what I did:
1) I took the leftover piece of blue dotted paper and adhered that onto a card base.
2) Then I added the negative alphabet die cut piece as my focal point to the background to add texture to the card.
3) On top of that I added two colored, stamped and die cut stars from the  Winter Bears set and the last colored tree image.
4) I had matted a small piece of red colored cardstock underneath the negative image before adhering that to the card base. This way it forms a word “Hi” to the card, I only needed to add a word to go with that to finish the sentiment. I chose to use the word “cutie”. There is also a little hand-drawn heart on the card for a fun detail and some twine adhered around the negative alphabet piece to create a frame.

I really had a good time creating both the layout and the cards. And as always, I recorded a little start-to-finish video for you to watch to give you a look at all of the steps. Here it is:

Wishing you all a creative week, see you in February!
xxx, Sanna
