Little Snowman

Hello everyone, Alice here. For today’s blog post I made this cute little snowman. Here in the Netherlands there is no snow yet. Hopefully it wil come.

So this time I started working with the snowman. First I made a background with WOW! embossing powder. For this I used the color Skylight (ws231x). It is a powder with some larger shimmer pieces in it. And I love glitter so really love this one! I edited the whole background with the embossing powder.

I made a frame with the Fitted Hexagons. I used the largest die in the set and cut the hexagon in the middle of the square.

I added some snowflakes around the cut out hexagon. The snowflakes are from the Classic Christmas special kit (#K007). I decided to cut them in white to keep attention in the middle. I cute off the parts of the snowflakes that were hanging over the square.

After that I made the snowman in the middle. Colored the details with distress ink. The scarf is the same color as the embossing powder in the background (Cracked Pistachio). I added some trees behind the snowman . The trees are from the Winter Scenery set (#1926)

Finally I added a sheet of kraft paper behind the card front to finish it off.

Masculine graduation cards

Hello there everyone, it’s Sanna Lippert here again with another guest design team project. For today’s cards I created a set of two masculine, clean and simple, graduation cards. As my son finished high school level and exams this June, I need a nice card for his graduation festivities.

I used woodgrain patterned paper and instead of flowers, just leaves to add a special touch to the card. Also, the leaves are done out of Shimmer Sheets, to add just a touch of festivity to the card. Here is how the card is done:

Step 1: Take light blue Soft Finish Cardstock and using the Summer Fun Sentiments stamp set and grey Distress Oxide stamp ink, stamp the sentiment “well done” onto the carstock.

Step 2: Next die cut a piece of woodgrain paper using the Stitched Rounded Rectangles die cut die and then stamp “I´m so proud of you” with black stamp ink onto it using the Build Your Own Sentiment 1 stamp set.

Step 3: Take a darker blue toned cardstock to mat the stamped cardstock strip. This will make the stamped element stand out more from the background. Then adhere the pieces onto the cardbase.

Step 4: Take a piece of Shimmer Sheet and apply a Clear Double Sided Adhesive sheet onto it. Now run the sheet thru your die cutting machine, but don´t die cut the image thru (don´t use a metal plate in your die cutting machine). This way you will get an embossed image. Next take your precision scissors and cut around the edges of the “embossed” image.

Step 5: Adhere everything on place and add some faux stitching around the edges to finish off the card. Optionally you can also add a few Craft Drops for decor or leave the card as it is. You now have a easy-to-mail, flat, yet decorative, masculine card done.

Since I had all the products alraedy on my desk, I also did a second card using the same basic idea and the same products, but modified the idea a little. This is a great way to strech one basic idea and make several variations of it at once. Besides, it is always good to have a card or two for just in case as backup!

Create Your Own Pin-Ups!

Hello, all! Judi here. I thought it would be fun to make some pins that can be worn again and again for special events like birthdays and anniversaries, taking the place of a corsage that only lasts for a day or two –– and, in the case of the star with ribbon, can be made in masculine colors. 

I chose ‘Make a Wish’ and ‘Special Day’ word dies from the A Way With Words collection to ensure that the pins can be used for a wide variety of celebrations! For example: The Special Day pin might be worn by someone spending their first day in a new home or by a mom- to-be at her baby shower; and the Make a Wish pin could be worn by the guest of honor at a graduation party!

1. Combine a double layer of die cut Shimmer Sheetz Stitched Circles with gathered lace. Secure the lace to the Stitched Circle with a slightly smaller Fitted Circle die cut from Double Sided Adhesive Sheet. Use two V-cut ribbon tails to accent the double layer Stitched Star. Both pins are backed with synthetic suede for durability (and in the case of the circle, to hide and further secure the gathered portion of the lace). Optional: Lightly sand the circle prior to adding words.

2. Die cut words from Shimmer Sheetz. For the circle, back with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet prior to cutting. Make a Wish will be adhered with small snippets of Tombow Xtreme Adhesive Tabs because the words extend past the star and can’t be adhesive-backed. Optional: Alter the star and Make A Wish with alcohol inks prior to die cutting.

3. Finish the back with a slightly smaller die cut circle or star cut from synthetic suede backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet prior to die cutting. Hide the flat part of the pin-back finding with a small die cut synthetic suede circle, notched at the sides to ensure that the pin-back can easily open and close.  

More ideas:

  • Use other dies to cut the simple shapes like Stitched or Scalloped Edge ovals or circles.
  • Incorporate event-specific greetings like Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary.
  • Go over-the-top with gems, dangling charms, dimensional flowers or other embellishments.

LOTS of Luck

Judi here! Graduation time is coming soon and I thought it would be fun to have a stack of Good Luck cards ready to send. I made them with my ‘By-the-Batch’ method –– one morning of cutting and layering and all ten cards were done. Suzanne Cannon’s Good Luck die is a perfect size for a card front!

Good Luck cards are useful year-round, just right for friends starting a job or moving to a new home, picking themselves up after a divorce, entering retirement, opening a business, entering retirement, and more…

Here’s how to whip up an easy batch of Good Luck cards:

  1. Choose cardstock and patterned papers in coordinating colors to go with the ten 4” x 5” pieces in a Shimmer Sheetz Iridescent Sampler Pack. (Or choose the Gemstone Sampler Pack.)
  2. Using the smallest die in the Stitched Ovals die set, cut a cardstock oval to layer onto each piece of Shimmer Sheetz.
  3. Die cut Good Luck ten times, coordinating colors with ovals and Shimmer Sheetz.
  4. Emboss and lightly sand each piece of Shimmer Sheetz. Wipe with damp paper towel.
  5. Using the photos as a reference, layer and adhere pieces onto ten patterned top-fold card bases measuring 4.25” high by 5.25” wide (.25” narrower than a standard A2 size). Use three pieces of narrow Washi tape to secure the Good Luck die cuts! Optional: Back the cardstock with Clear Double Sided Adhersive Sheet before die cutting Good Luck; skip the Washi tape.

TIP: Use the same By-the-Batch strategy to make birthday, anniversary, get well, or sympathy cards. Vary embossing folders to suit the occasion(s).

Sending A Little Luck To A Friend

Hi crafters! Judi here with a simple tutorial for you today.

This card will soon be on its way to a friend who is midway through four rounds of chemotherapy, but it would also be perfect for someone starting a new job, about to enter college, or buying a new house.

Experienced cardmakers – look at the photo and proceed! Beginners, please follow the instructions below.

1. Die cut ‘Good Luck’ from dark green Velvet Adhesive sheet.

2. Die cut the Planner Essentials 5 frame from Shimmer Sheetz in color of choice, backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive prior to cutting. (Reminder: A metal adaptor plate is REQUIRED for die cutting Shimmer Sheetz. Review Els van de Burgt’s video tutorial here if you are new to this technique.

3. Emboss outer frame and inner panel with two different embossing folders in coordinating patterns. I used two folders with leaves, but you can use any of your choice!

4. Arrange the elements on the front of an A2 top-fold patterned paper card as shown. Remove the release sheet from the back of the Shimmer Sheetz and Velvet Adhesive to adhere. Add quarter-inch brads to the holes at the top left and right.

5. Use spray adhesive to secure the dried 4-leaf clover. Alternatively, sew down the stem with fine metallic braid or embroidery thread to hold the clover in place. (If you don’t have a real clover, trace around a 3-leaf clover, add the fourth leaf, and hand-cut your own from the Velvet Adhesive sheet.)

TIP: Because a real clover is quite fragile, mail the card inside out to protect it.

OPTION: Instead of securing the embellished frame panel to a card front, back it with cardstock and turn it into a hanging sign! Knot cord or twine through the holes at the top corners.

I Melt for Cocoa

Since we are in full swing of winter, that means in my house we are in full swing of cocoa consumption. It seems every other day new snow is falling and tired kiddos need a little post school pick me up of sweet hot chocolate. So today, I thought I would whip up a little zero calorie treat that fits the seasons of warming up in the form of a mug of cocoa and a melting marshmallow.

Step One: Stamp the focal images from the Marshmallow Snowmen stamp set onto some 85lb White Soft Finish Cardstock. Color the images in with alcohol markers. I used my copics.

Step Two: Die cute the images using the coordinating Marshmallow Snowmen die set.

Step Three: Using the Dashing Circles die set, die cut a ring from a piece of Dusky Sky Soft Finish Cardstock to create the rim of the mug. Die cut a circle that will fit inside the mug rim from a piece of Bronze Metallic Shimmer Sheetz to be the cocoa.

Step Four: Using a piece of polka dot printed paper from the Sweet Vintage Rose collection, die cut it with the Dashing Rectangle die set.

Step Five: To create the handle of the mug, die cut an ‘O’ from some Dusky Sky Soft Finish Cardstock. Discard the ‘O’, and use the negative scrap from the inside of the letter. It sounds funny, but works perfectly.

Step Six: Using 10mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive, adhere the printed paper and mug/cocoa onto an A2 card frame.

Step Seven: Using some 3mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive, add the mug handle.

Step Eight: Add a bit of 3mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive to the bottom of the melting marshmallow. Add some three-dimensional squares to the top of the image. Adhere it to the shimmer sheetz circle. Adhere the stamped banner above the mug.

Step Nine: Stamp in brown ink, the sentiment from the Cute Winter Sentiments onto some 85lb White Soft Finish Cardstock. Trim the sentiment and matte it with some Rust Soft Finish Cardstock. Adhere it to the bottom left of the A2 card.

Step Ten: Using the same brown ink that you used to stamp the sentiment distress the edges of the A2 card frame.

What you get in the end is a fun mug of cocoa that is sure to brighten any child or chocolate-lover’s day.

I’m having so much fun figuring out what to do with my new Elizabeth Craft Designs planner. I thought that dividers would be a good place to start and Suzanne Cannon’s A Way With Words collection dies were ideal for spelling out what each section of the planner will be about. Like a true Virgo, I want my planner to be organized and practical – and dare I say it, tidy – so I made my dividers from durable Shimmer Sheetz and added equally durable hole reinforcements die cut from synthetic suede. And yet I want to allow for flexibility so the words I chose for each divider are ones with multiple possible interpretations. This gives me leeway to change what I put in each section. Shimmer Sheetz Sunday: Ten-Minute Christmas Cards with Removable Ornaments

I always seem to need just a few more Christmas cards (sound familiar?), so I’ve devised a strategy for making some that are simple and fast, but don’t look that way! Today’s tutorial is a trio that uses a non-traditional palette. I have lots of friends with taste as quirky as mine… I’m calling it a ten-minute card, but it probably won’t take that long.

I timed myself: Die cut two circles (2 minutes or less!), emboss and sand the smaller circle (2 minutes or less), add scrapbook paper to card front (1 minute at most), layer and complete the ornament (about 2 minutes), attach ornament to card front (30 seconds or less). This leaves a couple of minutes to unwrap and savor a peppermint patty while admiring your creation!
