Coloring Design Team Designer Challenge – April

April 18, 2017

Hi everyone,

It’s the third Tuesday in April and that means it is time for the Coloring Design Team Designer Challenge.

Our challenge this month is “Inside and Out” – We often decorate the front of our card and do nothing on the inside of the card. For our challenge this month let’s decorate the inside to coordinate with the front.

For our Challenge today we are giving away a $20 gift card to use on our website to 3 winners.

To enter, simply leave a comment on this blog post below and answer this question: What is your favorite or most-used sentiment when creating a card?

We will select 3 lucky winners in a random drawing.

The winners will be announced on Friday, April 21, here on the Elizabeth Craft Designs blog.

Now let’s take a look at the wonderful creations our talented Design Team have created for the Challenge this month. For more information about the cards, click on the designer’s name under each card to be taken to the designer’s blog post and will open up in a new window.

To start us off this month, Frances Byrne created a “Congrats on your new home” card using the Krista Schneider Row Houses Clear Stamp Set and coordinating die set. She used the Els van de Burgt Studio Stitched Fishtails and Fitted Fishtails for her main image panel with the Behind the Scenes – Earth and Sky Stencil for the sky and the Pop it Ups Outdoor Edges for the grassy designer paper panel. For the square panels Frances used the Stitched Squares, Fitted Squares, and Alphabet 2 – Lower Case die sets from Els van de Burgt Studio. She included Soft Finish Cardstock in White, Rich Black, Brick Red and Buttercream.

Selma Stevenson has created this delightful ‘bird-day!’ card using the Krista Schneider Bird-day Party Clear Stamp set and coordinating die set. To set the scene on the front of her card, Selma used the branch from the Honey Bear Clear Stamp and coordinating die sets. For the grass along the bottom of the card, she chose the CountryScapes Clouds & Grass die set. The clouds were created using the Behind the Scenes Earth and Sky Stencil. Selma incorporated the sentiment on a heart from the  Scallop Hearts from Els van de Burgt Studio and added movement with the Sliders and Spinners from Joset Designs. To finish off the front of the card she added corners from the Corners 1 die set from Els van de Burgt Studio. For the inside of her card Selma used the A Way with Words – Happy Birthday die along with another of the birds from the Bird-day Party Clear Stamp set and coordinating die set.

Karen Nofziger created this ‘tweet’ card using the Krista Schneider Feathered Friends Clear Stamps set and coordinating die set. By creating a window in the card front using Els van de Burgt Studio Fitted Ovals & Dotted Scallop Ovals die sets, part of  the inside of her card can be viewed from the outside, too. Karen added flowers to the front of her card using the Garden Notes Jasmine die set.

Elena Anderson created this adorable baby card. As you can see, she made the inside of her card the main feature. This is easy to do when you use the Pop it Ups Flower Flower Pot Pop Stand die set and Soft Finish Cardstock. Elena used the Krista Schneider Zoo Babies Clear Stamps set and coordinating die set as well as the Jungle Cuties Clear Stamp set and the Bird-Day Party dies to cut the balloons that decorate her card. For the sentiment she used the Pop it Ups Baby Clear Stamps set.

Our next card was created by Melanie Smith. Melanie used the Krista Schneider Jungle Cuties Clear Stamps set and coordinating dies.  To layer the image onto her card Melanie chose the Pop it Ups Labels & Circles die set. For the stripes that run across the front of the yellow panel, she used the smallest fishtail banner from the ModaScrap Stitched Fishtails die set.

Anita Kejriwal created her card so that the inside of the card can be viewed from the outside. For her card she used the Krista Schneider Feathered Friends Clear Stamps set with coordinating dies and Watercolor Paper. Anita chose Els van de Burgt Studio Dotted Scallop Rectangles and Fitted Rectangles to die cut the various layers of her card. To finish off her card she has used one of the sentiments from Joset Designs Dreams Sentiments Clear Stamps set.

Tina Guigui Dornbaum also created a card where part of the inside can been seen when the card is closed. She die cut a window opening on the front using the Els van de Burgt Studio Fitted Circles and Stitched Circles. Tina picked one of the flowers from the Krista Schneider Spring Blooms Clear Stamps set. She stamped the flower on the inside, leaving it as black on white, and then colored the image on the acetate window so the flower is in full color when the card is closed. Tina also used the ModaScrap Leafy Branch 4 and Stitched Fishtail Banners along with the Joset Designs Bee Sentiments Clear Stamps set to finish off her card.

Thank you for visiting our blog today. We hope you enjoyed seeing all the wondering creations our Coloring Design Team created this month and that it has inspired you to decorate the inside of your cards as well as the outside. Don’t forget to visit our designers’ blogs by clicking on their names to find out more about each project.

If you would like a chance to win our giveaway, be sure to leave your comment on TODAY’S blog post. We will select three lucky winners in a random drawing and the winners  will be announced here on our blog on Friday, April 21st.

Good luck, and have a great week!

“Thinking of you” as it’s generic enough to be used for a variety of cards. If that was the only stamp sentiment I had, it would be enough 😉

  • Joanne April 19, 2017 at 7:27 am

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get crafting or card making for a while due to health problems and trying to catch up with the garden and housework! Unfortunately I don’t get any help from my 28 year old son who has Aspergers and OCD! His days are spent mostly on the couch! I’m drooling over all of these gorgeously decorated cards!!

Thinking of You and Happy Birthday are usually pretty equally matched in my house.

  • Vicki Miller April 18, 2017 at 5:19 pm

My favorite saying for inside birthday cards is “Got Cake” and it has a cute little chubby alien that looks like he’s saying it. I love it because it’s unexpected. Also, my favorite thing to do to the back of the card is a stamp I have that says “If it was a Hallmark it wouldn’t look this good”. Everyone always flips my cards to the back to read this statement. If I didn’t do it, people would be disappointed.

  • Kathy Dreyer April 18, 2017 at 5:16 pm

My favorite stamp is “Thinking of You”. I use it on sympathy cards as well as notecards to friends and family with the meaning and message that I am thinking of them. I miss you. It’s been a while since we have met for lunch. It’s a versatile stamp that can be used with different meanings. When designing a card, I use a smaller design matching the front of the card and an envelope liner using one of the papers used in the card design.

  • Vivian C. April 18, 2017 at 5:10 pm

Wonderful design inspiration! I am starting to decorate the inside of my cards more. My most used sentiment is happy birthday. I’m partial to Karen’s “flying by to say” sentiment, though.

  • Linda B April 18, 2017 at 3:08 pm

Really enjoyed the cards the DT made, they are quite lovely. And I like to use a stamp that says Hello Gorgeous.. It makes me smile every time I stamp it. And I hope it has the same affect on the one who opens it. It also feels gender neutral to me.

  • Fatima Huerta April 18, 2017 at 3:04 pm

I was sooo excited to see all the wonderful creations the Coloring Design Team created this month. It has truly inspired me to now decorate not only the outside but now the inside of the card. Thank you so much. The most-used sentiment I use when creating a card is Happy Birthday.

My most used sentiment is happy birthday

  • Ellyn Knowlton April 18, 2017 at 2:51 pm

Whenever possible I like to use a play on words like Just dropping you a line. The inside of the card has a line and hook and a fish , Hogs & Kisses with a pig or Happy Bee Day with bees.

  • Linda Gregory April 18, 2017 at 2:49 pm

With 9 grandchildren and several friends I use HAPPY BIRTHDAY a lot and also with the help from friends this winter It`s THANK-YOU!

  • Michele J Emerson-Roberts April 18, 2017 at 2:43 pm

I often use a small portion of the die or stamp on the ensideof my cards and on the envelope too. I create and send a lot of inspirational cards (about 50 per month). My favorite saying for a lot of the cards I make is: “It is never to late to be what you might have been.”

  • Ellyn Knowlton April 18, 2017 at 2:42 pm

I like to use sentiments that have a double meaning like “Just dropping you a line” The inside of the card has a line and hook along with a fish; Happy Bee Day with bees or Hogs and Kisses with a pig. . However I send mostly birthday, valentines and Christmas cards.

  • Janice Mitchell April 18, 2017 at 2:39 pm

I lead a card making club of 50 active retired women. I like to show them that using Thinking of You can be extended by adding Get Well, Happy Birthday, Congratulations, or as an expression of Sympathy. It is the most versatile of all greetings.

  • Maureen McLaughlin April 18, 2017 at 2:37 pm

A lot of my cards are multi purpose so I try to use single word sentiments that can have a double meaning.. But after saying this I do reach for different Happy Birthday Greetings – this would have to be my most used message.
For the inside I stamp a smaller portion of an outlined image using the same stamp set on the front except in a lighter colour. I very lightly sponging over this image in the same colour sometimes extending the sponging to two corners.

  • Patty Robinson April 18, 2017 at 2:31 pm

I always decorate the inside of my cards. Usually, I stamp a small image from the stamp set or maybe just some hearts or coordinating washi tape. I do the same with my envelopes. I send most of my cards to my niece at college, so the sentiment is usually about missing her. Thanks for focusing on this feature.

  • Jean Chaney April 18, 2017 at 2:25 pm

I love these cards with the coordinating insides. Something to think about.
I find that I send out more birthday cards than anything else, so my most used sentiment is Happy Birthday!

  • Audre G April 18, 2017 at 2:22 pm

Figuring out what to say inside of a card is the hardest part, especially sympathy cards. I have to say, though, that “Happy Birthday” is the sentiment that I use the most.

  • Leslie Cernocky April 18, 2017 at 2:08 pm

The sentiment I use the most is “Happy Birthday”, as well. Although I do like “Congratulations” and “Smile”. The sentiment that is my least favorite is “In Sympathy” and I make a rule that except for pest passing it is the only cards I do not make.

  • Richard Hanna April 18, 2017 at 1:39 pm

“Thank you”, as I have so much to be thankful for.

  • Tonja R. April 18, 2017 at 1:39 pm

I can’t wait to try the elephant. Those are big in our house. No PUN intended.

  • Karen Kleinert April 18, 2017 at 1:35 pm

It is great that you are showing the inside and what you can do. My husband kids me that I do not have anything inside my cards. But then most of my cards are made for people that I have no way of knowing who they are giving them to. But this might sway me to incorporate something inside and mix it up. There are people that do not know what to say in a card and this might help them.

  • Virginia April 18, 2017 at 1:26 pm

I loved all the cards , the flower pop up being used as a baby card was my favorite

  • Mary Swanson April 18, 2017 at 1:24 pm

Most used sentiment is “Thinking of you” and “YOU ROCK”

  • Kathy April 18, 2017 at 1:20 pm

I enjoy making my own Christmas card…. so Merry Christmas is my most used sentiment….I also make a number of Easter cards.

  • Jeanette April 18, 2017 at 1:05 pm

I guess it would have to be, “Love You/Miss You.”

  • Cindy miller April 18, 2017 at 12:55 pm

Love looking at all the beautiful examples. A verse I use a lot is : No matter how difficult things seem…never underestimate the power of yourself. I know many people dealing with difficult situations or illnesses and I write weekly to deployed troops so I use this sentiment a lot.

  • Marge Burns April 18, 2017 at 12:53 pm

Like most everyone else it is Happy Birthday, that’s the most cards I make until Christmas.

  • Nadya Hance April 18, 2017 at 12:52 pm

My favorite is “Believe” with either flowers or butterflies.

  • Teena Schaefer April 18, 2017 at 12:52 pm

I make a lot of wedding cards, so, I probably use “Congratulations ” and “Best Wishes” more than anything else.

  • Stacey Kowbel April 18, 2017 at 12:49 pm

Fantastic cards by all! I don’t tend to do much to the inside of the card, so this was a great way to show what can be done. My most used sentiment is Happy Birthday

  • Roxanne April 18, 2017 at 12:36 pm

Great cards , I love them all and use them all .

  • Anneke April 18, 2017 at 12:36 pm

    Beautiful cards and very inspiring!
I think “Happy Birthday” is my the second most used sentiment and the most used is (I think) “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” (but also: Fijne Kerstdagen en een Gelukkig Nieuw Jaar because I still send a lot of Christmas cards to The Netherlands at that time of the year). But I am not sure because most people who get a Christmas card also get a birthday card.

It’s so hard to pick a favorite from such wonderful and talented card options today! I love Tina’s and Anita’s cards with the cut out windows. Neat idea! Lately it seems I’ve been making a lot of sympathy cards, but my favorite is the “thinking of you” card because there’s often no reason to send it other than I love you and am thinking of you!…hoping to make someone’s day a little brighter. Thanks for sharing such great ideas!

  • Renee Drew April 18, 2017 at 11:39 am

  • Barb macaskill April 18, 2017 at 11:35 am

My most used sentiments are, “Thank you ” on the outside and “for being you” on the inside or, “Just Because” on the outside and , “you are special to me”, on the inside.
I try to send between 10 to 20 cards a week just to let friends and family know that I am thinking of them! At family reunions I am introduced as “the card lady”.
I also love leaving cards in random places like doctor offices, hospital waiting rooms and on store shelves. On the outside of the envelopes I write, “Open me please”. Most of the cards I leave like this will say, “Smile”, “hello” or “you are special” since I just want to brighten people’s day with them.
You never know if that random person is having a good or bad day or if they are alone in the world so maybe this is the only “Happy” they will experience today!
Love the designer’s cards! They are all so lovely! TFS!

  • carol a smith April 18, 2017 at 11:34 am
