Elegant and Festive Snowflake Christmas Wreaths

November 9, 2017

Hi, it’s Sandy here with you today sharing two cards.  It’s always fun to use our dies in an unexpected way and that’s what we are going to do.  One of my favorite die sets is the Snowflakes and I’ve used it many times to make backgrounds or as a focal point on a card.  This time I want to show you how to make a stunning Christmas wreath that is either elegant or festive depending on what colors are used.

The finished size of these cards is 5.5″ square (top-fold).  Let’s begin with the blue one.

  1. Using the Stitched Squares, cut a blue card front panel.
  2. Optional (as shown): Using the Garden Notes Evergreen Wreath – emboss the wreath in the center of the blue panel rather than cutting it.  This was done by using the die cutting machine the same as for any embossing folder with the first tab open – placing die face up on one cutting pad – placing paper face up on the die – cover with rubber pad – cover with black Impressions Pad and run through the machine.

3.  Using any of the Fitted Circles dies – cut one ring that will fit inside embossed wreath by placing on ring inside a larger one.  The Dotted Scalloped Circle was used here simply because it was already on my work table.  This is merely a guide that can be saved and used for the next card so any cardstock or paper scrap will do.

4.  Mark the guide at 8 equal places around the guide.  TIP: Do this by folding the guide and then marking on the folds.

5.  Pierce a hole at each of the marks and place on the embossed panel as shown above.

6.  Mark with a pencil through each hole then remove the guide.  These marks will be covered later so no need to worry about how dark they are.

7.  Add Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back edges of the panel in order to adhere it to the card base later.

8.  Using the Snowflakes die, cut 8 snowflakes.  To give dimension to the project, bend the center pieces of each snowflake upward as shown above.

9.  Begin gluing the snowflakes to the panel centering the snowflakes on each pencil mark.  Add the first four snowflakes as shown above (as if on a clock face at 12, 3, 6, and 9. Then fill in the space with the four remaining snowflakes.

10.  Add a half-pearl to all but the top center snowflake. Optional: Instead of half-pearls use rhinestones, enamel dots or Glitter Dots peel-offs.

11.  Tie a small bow and add to top center snowflake.

12.  Remove the release sheet from adhesive tape on the back of the blue panel and center it on the card base.

OK – Now let’s make the festive wreath!

  1. The finished card is 5.5″ square (top-fold), just like the elegant wreath card.
  2. Using the Fitted Squares die closest in size to the card front, cut the green panel.
  3. Using the Dotted Scalloped Squares die that fits just inside the green panel, cut a dot pattern paper panel.
  4. Adhere the dot pattern paper to the green panel.
  5. Add Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back of the panel in order to adhere it to the card base later.

6.  Using the Snowflakes die, cut 8 snowflakes.

7.  Using the snowflake from the Entwined Circles die set, cut 8 small snowflakes.

8.  Make 8 three-layer snowflakes as shown above. Place a small brad through the center of each one.  TIP: If you don’t have green brads color some brass brads with a marker.   Any alcohol-based marker will work for this, including Sharpies.

9.  Complete the card per the same instructions as the first card, substituting a multi-loop twine bow for the ribbon.

Food for thought: Though it’s not shown on my two projects, many of the single-word sentiments from Suzanne Cannon’s ‘A Way With Words’ collection will fit beautifully in the center of the wreath. For example: Joy, Peace, Love.

I hope you will want to give  snowflake wreaths a try! It goes quickly and is fun to change the papers and colors.

Have a wonderful day,

Sandy

This is soooopretty. You could use vellum paper to cut out snowflakes and add a little color on the back of each one using an ink dobber. Also, add some glitter.
