Elizabeth Craft Designs Designer Challenge – August

August 15, 2017
Hi everyone!

The Die Cut and Coloring Design Teams are back today with another fun Designer Challenge to share with you.

This time around our challenge is Gift Giving – There are many times throughout the year when we need to give a gift to someone …. Birthdays, Christmas, Teacher Thank You’s etc. Create something for today’s challenge that could be given as a gift, either completely handmade, or something purchased and then decorated to give it that special touch.

If you haven’t heard, Elizabeth Craft Designs has just released new products from Krista Schneider; Elizabeth Craft Designs and new licensed designer Becky Seddon. You can find all these on the Elizabeth Craft Designs online store. The ModaScrap stamps/dies two of our design team have used will also be available soon.

For our Challenge today we are giving away a $20 Gift Card to use on the Elizabeth Craft Designs website to 3 winners.

To enter, simply leave a comment on this blog post below and answer this question: What are some homemade and crafty gifts you have created over the years?

I remember working really hard on the padded, fabric photo albums that were so popular many years ago! It was getting close to Christmas and my cat bit my hand when she got scared that I had taken her to the vet for her shots. My hand ended up getting infected and was very swollen, but I still finished up my projects! Not the fondest memory… ha!

What wonderful gift ideas! My best gift was for my son’s 16th birthday. He loved dirtbike riding as early as he could walk and talk. Over the years i saved many pictures and alot of memorabilla, using all these, i made a large heavy scrapbook containing all those plus alot of altered art. He enjoyed opening the gift as did many of his friends as they were pictured in it also. My son is now 22 and he and his friends still enjoy looking through the book!

I love the projects made by your DT, especially Frances’s calendars. All of the projects are so colorful and would be cherished by any recipient. I’ve made scrapbooks for all 14 of my nieces and nephews and all of my 6 siblings. I think it’s nice to have printed photos of the kids growing up displayed in the scrapbooks so they can hold on to them and share with their families when they have kids.

I made cards for all the holidays for my mother who complained that she never received any mail that wasn’t bills or junk anymore. I started this tradition after my father died and continued it until the day my mother died. In fact I gave her the last birthday card she received at age 89. She passed away two days later. Much to my surprise, she saved every card I made for the past five years. Its was fun looking back through Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, St, Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day, Easter, Birthdays July 4th etc. I brought them home with me so I could enjoy some of her comments written on the cards like I liked this one the best, or this is my favorite so far.

  • Cynthia Johnson August 15, 2017 at 10:20 pm

Great inspiration! I did card sets last Christmas with handmade boxes to match. Everyone loved them! I used to make candy and cookies but that got too expensive.

  • Grace August 15, 2017 at 9:31 pm

As a Nanny I like to emplement crafting as part of my daily activities with the kids I take care of. Most of the things we make are magnet gift tags made from cereal boxes decorated with design papers with fun messages. I also dry and save the flowers that the Mom gets for the kids to use as part of their projects on a card, box or little sachet bags to give it to the Mom again as either valentine, Mother’s Day or any random surprise or special day. They love it.

  • Christine Kosmak August 15, 2017 at 9:23 pm

I made a lamp for my son that was essentially a time capsule of his youth and a reminder of everything he used to treasure. I filled the base of the lamp with the items he forgot to take out of his pockets before I did the laundry when he was little. I kept them for years. Things ranging from GameBoy game cartridges, to dollar bills, to pogs, rubber bands, rocks, pencils, coins, marbles, a rubber hot dog, you name it, it was probably in there. My son cherished that gift

  • Ingrid Broekman August 15, 2017 at 4:19 pm

Loving all the new products you’ve added (Becky Seddon’s Snowflakes are calling out to me). Over the years I’ve often used old boxes, repurposing them with decorative materials and accents. My very first (in the mid 70’s) was an empty liquor bottle box which I covered in red construction paper, and decorated with antlers, a face and a little shiny red ball for a nose, to look like a Christmas Reindeer. Funny how those memories stick with you.

  • Marsha D August 15, 2017 at 4:04 pm

Boxed sets of cards. Painted Christmas tree balls. Afghans. Baby blankets. Hats and scarves. Most of the Christmas gifts I give are homemade so these are just a few of the things I have made.

  • Erica August 15, 2017 at 3:55 pm

As a long-time card designer/maker, it’s been sad to see members of my family and lots of friends no longer around for whom to make cards. So I make dozens of cards and donate them to different recipients, i.e., Ronald MacDonald House. Also found “Cards for a Cause” on Splitcoaststampers.com. Now I can still enjoy making cards and helping worthy causes!

    Hi,
My favorite creation was an explosion box card for my niece’s graduation, the top was shaped like a mortar board and it had four layers inside. All the layers were colored or painted with various encouraging sayings, the inner most layer were pictures of her at different ages and cute comments. The center was a gift card holder. She loved it!

    Beautiful projects as always!
I have made many gifts over the years from quilts, to food baskets and recipes, calendars with my daughter dressed up for each of the seasons, etc. I think the one that was most appreciated which I found out years later was a gift wrap station that could be hung in a closet and with it a set of blank cards to give for various occasions. I was told the recipient was so happy to have had it on hand at a time when she really needed a quick card to give to a friend. Thank you so much for your inspiration and generosity!

  • Fay Marie Gardner August 15, 2017 at 11:48 am

I have made gifts of the pillow box with handles to give away as favors at a Christmas party. I put chapstick, hand cleaner spray, spot remover wipes, etc. in them. They were a hit!

I used to do a lot of counted cross-stitch as gifts but now I just stitch for myself. In paper-crafting, I make a LOT of cards and then have made a few wreaths with leaves or flowers. I’m still learning new techniques so I love your blog.

Oh, wow! I have been crafting almost all my life! I have made wreaths, baskets, done crewel work, made boxes with handmade cards in them, done sketches, made place mats, all of which have been gifts to others. The past 20 years I have concentrated mostly on paper crafts and just love using all the wonderful paper products, stamps, dies and die cutting machines out there. I also love the techniques that go with paper crafting. The design team did a great job showcasing all the great products!

I’ve always enjoyed making homemade crafts as gifts. The most appreciated was a quilt that I made for my grandson. Nothing fancy or intricate, but it got a lot of use. I’ve made everything from crochet shoulder wraps to microwave potato bags to my Mom’s cranberry relish. This year (shhhh….don’t tell), my husband made bird houses for everyone! If I have time, I’ll make bowl cozies. Love the new release!

  • Linda August 15, 2017 at 11:18 am

I’ve been crafting since the age of 10 and I’m now 65! Remember, back in those days we had to “teach ourselves” or buy a “how to” book on one type of crafting – such as macrame, cake decorating, card-making, bead work, cross stitch and later counted cross stitch, crochet of afghans, baby sets using the #10 cotton embroidery thread and crocheted toys for every baby that I knew born into the world! lol Now we are so fortunate to have the internet and Elizabeth Craft Design for encouraging and teaching us the “tricks of the trade” along the way! My favorite paper-crafting creations are lovely die cuts make into Christmas decorations and lovely die boxes decorated with embellishments and 3-D art with a special gift inside. What a joy to see all the other creations out there. Thank you, Elizabeth Craft Design for the most unique and lovely die cuts!

  • Kirsten Leavell August 15, 2017 at 10:36 am

I made a bouquet of 75 paper flowers. All the flowers were hand made using multi layered flower punches. The bouquet consisted of three different shades of pinks and I used enamels and wax to seal the flowers one by one before attaching wire stems to create the bouquet! This was for my Grandma’s 75th birthday! She later on moved to an assisted living home at age 84 (almost 10 years later) and she used the same flowers as a “paper garden” throughout her little room. Some of the flowers adorned picture frames, were attached to mirrors and curtain rods. It was amazing. Sadly she passed away in 2015 and now a few flower buds adorn my favorite picture of her here in my craftroom!

  • Vicki August 15, 2017 at 10:34 am

  • D.K. Weaver August 15, 2017 at 9:53 am

I have crafted since I was 10. I come from a family of crafters, so it wasn’t a big jump. Over the past few years I have woven baby blankets, yoga mats and dishtowels as gifts. I have knitted sweaters, shawls and socks every year for family and friends. This year I retired and began making cards and card sets. My latest gift was a set of prayer cards for my brother-in-law to give away in his sales travels. I was raised that a hand made gift is a way to give a personal part of yourself to someone you love. Members of my family would consider themselves slighted if Christmas did not include hand made items from each other. I sometimes feel that particular sentiment is getting lost in our electronic age.

  • Nadine Wallen August 15, 2017 at 9:52 am

I love these ideas, especially the coasters! Earlier this year, I made fancy bookmarks (complete with metal charms and tassels) for guest gifts at a baby shower. My only concern was whether the guests still read anything non-electronic, but I figured that the bookmarks could even be used for recipe books or magazines. Everyone loved them! In the past, I’ve also made ornaments as Christmas gifts, which were well received.
