Getting ready for a YouTube video

February 18, 2014

Els spent yesterday working on the YouTube video tutorial called “Silk Microfine Glitter – Coloring with Alcohol Markers” and she sent a behind-the-scenes look at how she prepares. She gets everything in place on the table (samples, all the supplies, everything arranged in the order that it will be used in her demonstration) and then she turns on the camera and starts talking, as if you are there with her taking a class! We’ll share the link to the video as soon as it’s ready. There have been so many requests for information about this technique.

Getting ready for a YouTube video

In the meantime we like to show you a card Els made using the new Australian Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz. She used two of our new Embossing folders that are ready to ship at the end of this month. She also used two of the Elizabeth Craft Designs flowers die sets.

Here are step-by-step instructions to make this beautiful Flowers & Patchwork Card.

For the card base and Shimmer Sheetz patchwork background:

  1. Fold a 8.5” x 10” piece of black cardstock in half to create a 4.25” x 5” card base.
  2. From Australian Opal Shimmer Sheetz, cut one 4.25’’ x 5’’ piece and two 2.5’’ x 2.5’’ square pieces.
  3. Using a felt pad applicator, apply Red (or Dark Pink) alcohol ink to one of the 2.5’’ x 2.5’’ squares. Let ink dry.
  4. Emboss the larger piece of Shimmer Sheetz and rub Jet Black StazOn on the de-bossed side, using the ink pad as the applicator. Let ink dry. (*De-bossed side is the side where the background is raised and the pattern is below the surface)
  5. When the alcohol ink is dry, emboss this piece of Shimmer Sheetz with a different folder. Use the same embossing folder for the other 2.5’’ x 2.5’’ square. Lightly sand the embossed side of both pieces. (*Embossed side has the raised pattern)
  6. Now cut the Shimmer Sheetz into small pieces and create your patchwork background. Use double sided adhesive to adhere the patchwork.
  7. Ad black Peel-Off lines around the patchwork.

For the flowers:

Before you start, notice that each flower has several layers. The layers are die-cut from Shimmer Sheetz and from cardstock that has been covered with double-sided adhesive and polished with Silk Microfine Glitter. All flowers have a mix of both of these.

You can use the colors shown or create your own combinations. We chose Flower Set 3 and the NEW Big Flower Set 1 for our dies.

(Els recommends making a big batch of flower layers so you can mix and match the layers to make enough flowers for several cards at one time! Flowers can have more layers, or fewer layers)

  1. Die cut some of the flower shapes from white cardstock covered with double-sided adhesive sheet. (These flowers will be glittered in step #3)
  2. Die cut some of the flower shapes from Australian Opal Gemstones Shimmer Sheetz (or your choice of colors). *Reminder: You will need the metal adapter plate to die-cut Shimmer Sheetz. Review the YouTube tutorial if you are not familiar with this method – the cutting side of the die will be facing the metal adapter plate, with the Shimmer Sheetz in between (the rest of the cutting sandwich will depend on what machine you are using).
  3. To glitter the cardstock flowers, take off the backing to expose the adhesive, apply the glitter and polish using your index finger.  Use Silk Microfine Glitter Recipe mixtures or use Silk Microfine Glitter straight out of the jar. (Recipe mixtures used in the project shown: #3 Silverado, #4 Victoria and #5 Antique Garnet. You can download the Glitter Recipes List from the Elizabeth Craft Designs website)
  4. Assemble the flowers using double-sided adhesive to adhere the layers. (Not wet glue).
  5. Arrange and adhere the finished flowers to the Shimmer Sheetz patchwork card front.
