Stamped Flower Cards with Masking Technique

May 13, 2018

Hello everyone, it´s Sanna here again with another guest blog post and step-by-step. For today´s post I created a set of flower cards using a stamp masking technique. By adding a different sentiment, this basic idea can be used for almost any occasion.

Here is how I created the cards:

Step 1: Take a big piece of white cardstock (at least 12×12 inch size) and choose a selection of your favorite Distress Oxide inks. Build color combinations of 3-4 ink colors and start applying the first set of tones onto the non-stick craft sheet.

Step 2: Then spritz the inked area with water until the ink builds nice bubbles on the craft sheet. Now place the white cardstock (one corner of it) onto the wet ink area and let the color soak into the paper.

Step 3: Dry with a heat tool and if you are happy with the result, leave it as it is. Optional, you can press the paper once more onto the leftover ink splatters to create a more layered and detailed look.

Step 4: Repeat these steps with every open area of the paper with different color combinations until the whole paper piece is colored. Now cut the paper into rectangles sized to match the white side-fold card bases.

Step 5: Take the Flower Power clear stamp set and stamp a flower onto a a piece of paper (a sticky note or lightweight notebook paper will do for this purpose). Fussy cut the image to use for a mask.

Step 6: Choose one of the background pieces and with black ink start stamp the same flower image once, anywhere on the rectangle. Place the fussy cut flower mask over the stamped image and stamp a second image slightly overlapping the first.

Step 7:Keep moving the mask and stamping more flowers until happy with the DIY background. Repeat this process with other inks and flowers to create more backgrounds.

Step 8: Using the Sentiments 1 and 2 stamps and dies, create sentiments for the cards. Leave them white or color to match the backgrounds.

Step 9: Optional: Add colored details to the flower backgrounds with the Distress Oxide inks and a water tank brush.

Step 10: Adhere the background piece and the sentiment onto a card base. Optional: Add some glitter glue details here and there. Doodle with black and white pens. Die cut a sentiment instead of using a stamped one. Fussy cut the backgrounds and use pieces instead of whole rectangles as shown in the photo above. Instead of die cutting the stamped sentiments, create simple bands and banners as shown below.

For more details on how I created these cards, there is also a start-to-finish video available for you to watch:

I hope you give this technique a try and create interesting, unique, personalized card backgrounds of your own with this stamp image masking technique!
Have fun stamping and inking and see you next month for another tutorial.
xxx, Sanna
