Sweet as Sugar – ATCs and a Layout by Riikka

December 3, 2017

Moikka, it’s Riikka here with my last Guest Design Team post for Elizabeth Craft Designs! I want to thank you for the honor of guesting this year and I appreciate your comments. It has been a great ride and I have loved working with the dies and other supplies! My favorites are the new patterned papers and the great stamp sets, so I’m definitely going to continue using those in my makes in the future!

For this last post I’ve made some sweet treats with the Lollypop die set – some candy ATCs and a layout. The idea and the color palette came from the two papers you can see mixed in the first lollipop above – the minty green polka dot and the pink solid paper. They are something I wouldn’t have thought of combining otherwise but as they lay on top of each other when I was going through the supplies in search for an idea for this last post, I noticed how good they looked! And I started to think about candies immediately so then the ball started to roll, so to say. I also mixed in some white to brighten the cards and the black stamping brings in the contrast.

I took some step-by-step photos while working on the ATCs. Below you can see how I layered and combined the different mediums and how the process evolved. As always, you can use the same steps to create something else as well – a regular card or a layout like I did for my second project. Without further ado, here’s the tutorial!

Step 1. Cut your cards from Dove Grey Soft Finish Cardstock and then the first layer from the pink script paper from the “Viaggi Vintage” paper set. Use the “Postage Stamp Rectangles” die set for the first layer. Attach the layer to the base with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape. ATCs are 2½” x 3½”.

Step 2. Make a candy-colored swirl on your ATCs using water soluble crayons and white gesso. Draw a few circles with the crayons, dip your finger to white gesso and then mix the two with a circular motion. Remember that the gesso will tint the colors of the crayons so best to start with a bolder color rather than a pastel. If the first try won’t give you the result you wish, add a bit of the crayon on top and have another go.

Step 3. After the last layer has dried add a sparkling layer on top. Use the “Butterflies and Stars” stencil and apply embossing ink through the stars onto the ATCs. Then while it’s still wet, add some sparkly embossing glitter on top and heat set.

Step 4. Time to add some light and frame the ATCs. Using slightly watered-down white gesso, make some splatters on the ATCs. Concentrate the splashes in the area of the stars so they look like they’re twinkling. Draw lines around the ATCs and ink the edges with pink to finish defining the frame.

Step 5. First some stamping to the background and then on to the focal point. Using the “Dream Sentiments” stamps add some random stamping to the background in black or grey. I tried to avoid the really harsh black when stamping and stamped the first time really lightly and then continued stamping without re-inking for second and third generation impressions that will be light grey. The focal point is made using the “Lollypop” die set. I used thee papers: White and Pink Peach Soft Finish Cardstock and then a minty green one from the “Thinking about Polinesia” collection.

Step 6. Finish the ATCs with the word ‘happiness’ or a sentiment of choice stamped onto pink peach colored cardstock. Ink around the edges of the piece before adhering it, then adhere the lollipop on top. Embellish with a few half-pearls.

I used the same steps while making the layout below. I changed the papers I used in the first step a little – adding the pink script first and then cut the rectangle piece with the postage stamp edge out of pink peach paper, but the next steps are the same – I added the candy swirls and the stars. There are also white splatters and hand-drawn frames at the edges, but not around the whole project. However, I did ink the edges of the stamped sentiment as in the ATCs. As for the focal point, that needs to be the photo, so the lollipops are used in the layout as embellishments.

The page is about my younger daughter’s birthday party just last month. Normally it takes me ages to get the photos printed but this time I used an Instax camera to snap a picture of the table and could document the event almost immediately. Needed to wait the guests to leave first, though…ha ha. Usually my kids have had a themed party but this time it was otherwise – my daughter wanted to invite her friends to a local aquarium so the birthday party we had at home was just for relatives, adults, so we didn’t have a theme.

Thank you so much for stopping by today! I hope you won’t be a stranger -visit my own blog (link) or see my Instagram (link) in the future! Thank you for everything and with these candy-like creations I want to also wish you a sweet holiday season and all the best in the coming new year!

Hugs!

xoxo Riikka
