The Twelve Days of Christmas Mantelscape

November 22, 2014

Nancy Walker is back as today’s Guest Designer, showing us how to create this stunning Twelve Days of Christmas Mantelscape.

Mantelpiece

The Twelve Days of Christmas Mantelscape

By Nancy Walker

Since Karen Burniston joined forces with Elizabeth Craft Design, I have been excited to see what she designs next. I have followed her designs for years, and these new wafer-thin dies are a dream! I have been delighted that all shapes needed to make a complete card with various levels of mats and focal points are included in the die sets. This makes storage a dream. The Accordion Fancy Label die has become my favorite. There is no end to what can be done with this set. And now—a scene for your mantel!

THE MANTELSCAPE CARD

1. Choose a set of coordinating stamps. This project uses a stamp set based on the Twelve Days of Christmas from the familiar old song.

2. Cut number of panels needed for the stamp set from patterned paper. This project uses a 6” square pad of various coordinating Christmas cardstocks. It is acceptable to use all the same paper patterns or one or two coordinating ones.

3. Using one of the dies from the set that will be the correct size for the images chosen, cut these into squares from heavy white cardstock. Bristol board or hot press watercolor paper takes water media and markers very well without much bleeding.

4. Stamp images on white cardstock, cut close to the size of the die chosen. Note: the title for this piece was too large to use a smaller die, so an extra panel was cut from the hot press watercolor paper and trimmed off so it fits flush with the pivoting fancy label inside the panel.

3a

5. Stamp images in black or heat emboss with black fine detail powder. If using water media to color the stamped images, heat embossing will allow more control with the watercolor. Alcohol markers were used to color these images, so a black ink that is suggested for use with alcohol markers was used.

6. Color all images and cut with chosen die.

2[1]

7.  If using one of the smaller dies, and there is another larger one that can be used for a mat, cut mats from solid cardstock that coordinates with the panels.

3

8.  Using Distress Inks and an Ink Application tool, add some warm color to the edges of the colored panels. Then switch to a clean applicator tool and edge each colored panel and each colored mat in gold ink. Then use a metallic gold paint pen to draw a controlled edge around each mat. Hint: cut a small slit in the applicator tip, prime the pump, and run the pen around the edge with the paper inserted into the slit. It will not be perfect, but it is an easy way to accomplish this task.

FINISHED STAMPED AND MATTED IMAGES:

4[1]

FINISHED PANELS, READY TO ASSEMBLE:

5[1]

ASSEMBLE THE MANTELSCAPE

1.  Adhere each finished matted image to panels onto pivot area in the middle.

2.  OPTIONAL: If the chosen cardstock is “wimpy” as much printed cardstock is, add a reinforcement panel on the back. Since this is a large piece, it will need reinforcement. Smaller projects will be fine without them.

3.  To make a reinforced panel, cut a panel out of either coordinating cardstock or plain white. This project uses white and then each panel is stamped with a background Christmas words stamped in green and then sprayed with gold glitzy spray to match the gold on the front. This way the center won’t be too heavy and can be trimmed down as shown here:

6

ASSEMBLY

1.  If a smaller accordion fold card has never been made, it would be good to practice on some plain panels to get the idea. Following instructions with the die (or online at one of the excellent YouTube videos by Karen Burniston and Els van de Burgt showing you how to assemble an accordion card), practice along with the person teaching on the video.

2.  Remember to lay out the panels with the “wing” on the right. Adhere some double sided adhesive on the front of each flap or wing and on the front of the two little tabs that will connect the center panels. Now “exercise” that flap and the tabs a little by turning them up at the fold line and then flattening them back out.

3.  Put adhesive on all flaps. Begin with the first panel and add the second panel to the flap, adhering the flap to the back of the next panel on its left side. Do not put the second panel flush with the fold line. It needs a little “wiggle” room so it can open and close. Repeat this method, assembling the first four panels. Then repeat this for each of the next three panels.

FIRST TWO PANELS WITH FLAP (OR WING) JOINED TO NEXT PANEL:

7

4. Decide if the mantelscape needs to begin with a mountain fold or a valley fold and then fold each group accordingly. This project begins with a valley fold on the outer frame panels so that the title page shows up better when on the mantel. The inner panels will be a mountain fold over the valley fold. Once that decision is made, take each center on the little pivot points and “exercise” them once.

5. The pivoting centers of each panel fold the opposite way, so take the first two panels and adhere the tabs to the back of the next pivoting panel. That will put the centers in the “mountain” fold pattern. Tape the next center panel going the opposite way as shown in the photo or the directions from online. See next photo.

8

6.  Do this with all the rest of the panels already put together. It is better to make 4 smaller versions of this project than to add one at a time. { To quote a favorite teacher, “Ask me how I know.”}

7. Now merely join the first section with the second section via the flaps and join the tabs the same way on each previous section. Repeat with the next two sections, and finally join the two large sections in the middle.

8. Be very careful when handling this many sections at the same time. It is better to keep the section being worked on folded as best as possible while joining the next panel. Be aware that the pivot area is the most fragile part of this panel, so do not put too much stress on any of the pivot points.

9. Once totally assembled, it can be pressed gently in a single stack to “set” the folds. Remember to alternate mountain and valley folds. When the outer panel is a valley as seen above in the sample, the center panels come forward and are joined together. The next folded area will be coming forward in a mountain fold, while the center panel will go towards the back in a valley fold. This is an excellent pattern for a decorative piece.

10. A project like this can also be used on the center of a table by finishing both sides with images. Reinforcement will not be necessary if two panels are combined for this method.

Karen Burniston Pop it Ups Designer Challenge – Spooky September!

September 17, 2014

Hi, it’s Karen Burniston with the September Pop it Ups Designer Challenge. Each month I challenge my Designer Challenge team to use Pop it Ups dies for a specific theme. This month the challenge was to make Halloween cards and you are going to LOVE what they’ve created.

For my project and video I will teach the technique for doubling the Lorna Label Pop-up since it’s something that a lot of the designers have been doing and I get regular requests for a video tutorial showing how to do it. I added a second technique for adding a skinny box platform through the Double Lorna, allowing animation of a taller and/or heavier object (like a mummified penguin). Watch the video here:

Here are photos of the finished card, which measures 5″ wide by 5.5″ tall and will mail in an A7 envelope (5″ x 7″) for additional postage because of the bulk.

KB_Spooky_Sept

Here’s a close-up photo of my Chilly Mummy. Because of the ribbon wrapping, the arms have bulk and will naturally fall down into the “I’m going to get you!” position when the card is opened.

KB_Spooky_Sept_Close_Up

Here’s a side view of the card so you have a visual of all the different platforms in the double-Lorna-plus-extra-box card. The lower Lorna label, made automatically in the doubling process, acts as a floating floor and you can add horizontal slots anywhere along that floor to animate other objects, such as my tree. Use a slot/foot system to animate items all over the floor if you choose.

If you’re wondering why I didn’t simply use a slot/foot system to animate the mummy, it was only because the mummy was going to be heavy with all the bandages and especially top-heavy with the arms coming out. For that reason, I went with a full box platform instead of just a slot/foot. If you need a reminder of the video measurements:

  1. Measure 1.75″ from the center fold of the card to place the slot die.
  2. Use a 3/8″ x 9″ strip of cardstock, folded in half, then in half again, to create a box platform with 2.25″ sides. Trim the outer sections into small feet to make it easier to attach them through the slots.

PIVOT CARDS

Raquel Mason created this fun haunted house card using the House Pivot Card, Poppy the Owl, the All Seasons Tree and the Holiday House dies. Poppy sits atop the broom from the ECD snowman die and because the handle of the broom is attached behind the house, Poppy will “fly” when the card is opened. So clever!

Raquel_KB DC Spooky Sept 2014 open

Donna Wright also used the House Pivot Card with the Holiday House and All Seasons Tree, but went for a more ominous spooky feel with her black houses, Outdoor Edges silhouetting the horizon and bright glittery moon.

Donna_House

Donna Wright blew me away with this creation, where she created a double-House card (use the same “cut into a folded card” technique as shown in this month’s video) but then continued on with another clever technique which was to invert the folds so the double-house is a pop-up inside the card rather than a pivot. She mixed house parts from the Holiday House and the House Pivot Card to fashion her two houses and stamped and colored some cute trick-or-treaters to complete the look.

Donna_Haunted_Houses

Fran Sabad also used the House Pivot Card and wanted to show that a new stamp set from Stampin’ Up! will work perfectly with this die. Make sure you click over to see her card’s interior, too.

SPIRAL CIRCLE PULL CARDS

Helen Cryer created the cutest Frankenstein card ever using the Spiral Circle Pull Card. Helen comments on her blog that this card was made easier by having all the control over card size and fold placement. The Spiral Circle Pull Card needs only a card with a fold (and the fold can be anywhere) to turn it into a z-fold flip card.

Helen1_Frank Helen2_Frank

Frances Byrne also used the Spiral Circle Pull Card, but did something completely different – she created a gatefold double pull with the Clock and Gears on the first circle and the spiral inside the second circle. Check out the eyeballs on the spiral – what a great spooky idea!

Frances1_KBDCwitchingwm_thumb[2] Frances2_KBDCwitching2wm_thumb[3] Frances3_KBDCwitching3wm_thumb[3]

Karen Aicken shows yet another look for the Spiral Circle Pull Card – leaving the spiral exposed so it is visible in the closed position. You’ll see her cute googly-eyed crows peeking out from within the spiral. Then, pull the card open and the crows will fly. How fun!

GENERAL POP-UPS

Summer Hills-Painter and I were definitely wave-lengthing on our ideas this month. She, too, created a Chilly-the-Mummy card. The pop-up die is the Lots of Pops, which comes with several platforms for decorating. She used just the shadow layer of Chilly, cut from green cardstock and wrapped with bandages from her first aid kit! I especially love the inking on her moon.

Summer September Challenge

Shelly Hickox created a towering haunted house using the Holiday House die with folded paper so each section of the house would become taller. She explains this process on her blog. Shelly used the Lorna Label pop-up to animate her spooky house and fence.

shelly hickox pop it ups haunted house

Kelly Booth also created a double-Lorna card this month and decorated it to perfection using stamped and colored images and her own background inking technique. Kelly is amazing with her Copics as you can see here!

Kelly_Booth_Double_Lorna

Karen Aicken used Hoppy the Frog on the Lucy Label pop-up die for a fabulous Hoppy Halloween card. This side view shows the differences between the Lucy and the Lorna pop-up dies. Lucy (used here) is a smaller label that sits very far forward into the card. The extra box platform (used for the bat) is optional.

KarenA_Card_PIU_Lucy_HoppyHWeen__05

Karen Aicken‘s next card uses the Lorna Label pop-up. You can see that the Lorna is a larger label that sits close to the back wall and atop a required box platform. In this card Karen used it to animate the Holiday House die and made a clever path using the Outdoor Edges.

KA2_Card_PIU_SeptKBDC_Spooky_006

Caz Counsell blew me away with her FrankenPop card, not only for the very clever and cute styling of Poppy the Owl as Frankenstein, but also for the amazing texture she created with the Damask Embossing folder for the foreground and the trees. Everything about this card is amazing!

ACCORDION ALBUMS

Shelly Hickox made a sensational 3-page Katie Label Accordion with clear pages that have been stamped with spider webs. What an amazing combination of patterns and textures. Shelly explains how she created this look on her blog post. I also have a video tutorial for adding clear pages to Accordion albums.

shelly hickox pop it ups halloween album

Raquel Mason shows off the brand new Halloween in Frame peel-off stickers, designed by Judi Kauffman to perfectly coordinate with the Katie Label Accordion die. For Raquel’s card, she used the silver peel-off stickers, plus microfine glitter and bright greens, purples and oranges. The Katie Stars Frame Edges are used on the album and she also added a string of banners across the pages using pieces from the Lots of Pops die. What fun!

Raquel2_KB DC Spooky Sept 2014 Katie Accord Peel-Off open

Kelly Booth also used the same dies and stickers as Raquel, but chose to do a four page Katie Label Accordion with the black peel-off stickers and despite similar color choices, the two cards feel completely different. That’s the wonderful thing about die cutting, where every card is a new card, even with the same ingredients.

Kelly2_Katie

Frances Byrne used Poppy the Owl and the broom from the ECD snowman die for a fabulous 3-page Fancy Accordion Album. This card is fabulous – clean, crisp and loads of fun!Frances2_Fancy

Fran Sabad recently injured her arm and has been crafting one-handed (and her left hand, too!) I certainly can’t tell a difference in her amazing creations, can you? Check out this 3-page Circle Accordion with fabulous pieces and parts. Fran found the perfect green bubbles for her brew.

Fran Sabad also made a 2-page Oval Accordion card with a witchy Poppy the owl and the new Oval Clouds Frame Edges. What a perfect combination of colors!

CHARACTER DIES

Karen Aicken made this wonderful card front for her haunted house card shown above. I love her styling of Poppy the Owl with shiny eyes and patterned body. She added a stamped and glittered witch hat and illustrates how perfectly the All Seasons Tree works as a branch for the Character dies.

KA1_Card_PIU_SeptKBDC_Spooky_001

Caz Counsell shows how perfectly the decorator dies in the Pop it Ups collection can be used for flat card fronts. Here she has used Hoppy the Frog for a wonderful witch’s brew card. Notice the cauldron’s feet – eek! Love that!

Caz_Cauldron

So how about it? Feeling spookily inspired to try your own version of one (or more) of these cards? One thing I can guarantee is that pop-up cards ooze fun. They’re fun to make, fun to give and most definitely fun to receive!

I’ll be back next month on October 15th for the next Designer Challenge. In October we’re doing a theme called Make it Manly where we will inspire you with card ideas suitable for the men and boys in your life using Pop it Ups dies.

Until then . . . Happy Haunting!

A Pink Rain Accordion Card

August 19, 2014

Hi Kelly Booth here 🙂 For today’s blog post I decided to use the new Rainy Day die set by Elizabeth Craft Designs along with the Karen Burniston Fancy Label Accordion die set.
If one of my friends is sick, I always like to cheer her up with a handmade card. This is one of those cards in pretty pink. I hope you enjoy today’s tutorial.

rBsUtqaSvQWjKnVLi07lTX8IKkXjVYQ2G_qOcA5Ygw0

To create my card, I first like to get all my pieces cut, stamped, and ready to assemble.

1. Cut pink cardstock 8.5 by 6.5 and adhere to Elizabeth Craft Designs double sided adhesive. Cut 12 polka dot frame edges (16 if you want the frame on the back of the card as well).

2. Cut umbrella and 2 solid rain boots from Pink Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz. Cut 2 rain boots overlays from Light Pink Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz.

3. Cut 4 accordion pages from white cardstock and stamp pink rain on both sides using a bright pink ink. Cut apart two of these leaving 2 outer frames and 2 label pieces.

4. On one accordion page, stamp sentiment on inner label. Make sure tabs are facing to the right as this is how you will assemble the card.

5. Cut one more accordion page from pink cardstock placing the large label decorator die on the inside before cutting. See picture below.

You should now have pieces that look like this

DSC_8496

DSC_8503

6. Apply Glossy Accents on umbrella handle and sprinkle Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter on top. Set aside to dry.

7. Take your accordion page with sentiment and adhere pink frame around the sentiment using a tape runner or dots of glue.

8. Adhere rain boot overlays to solid rain boots using small pieces of double sided adhesive. Adhere boots to the inside frame of the other accordion page as shown in the first two pictures at the top. Use foam tape at the back of one of the boots. Adhere umbrella top using pop dots. Then apply a few drops of glue at the back of the umbrella handle and adhere to card tucking the top under the umbrella.

9. Lay the decorated accordion pages side by side with the tabs facing toward the right.
Put a strong adhesive on the tabs and connect the two accordion panels. While still flat, turn the pages over and adhere the extra (stamped) frames on the back of the panels using adhesive of your choice. Next, connect the two label shape inner panels, making sure that the outer frames form a valley fold and the connected label shapes form a mountain fold.
Refer to the photo. TIP: Gently fold along the score lines to that the card will fold flat when closed.(If needed, review Karen Burniston’s Accordion Card video tutorial).

10. Adhere the extra two inner labels to the back of the card covering the small tabs.

Fancy Label Accordion Birthday Card

August 5, 2014

Hi everyone! Helen here today. The kids have finally broken free from school for the summer, and we are enjoying a stretch of gorgeous weather! I decided to share a birthday card with you today. Birthday cards are far and away the ones I need most.

I used a combination of Accordion Fancy Label dies and frames, with Shimmer Sheetz and a cake Peel-Off sticker.

DSC_0099Directions:

1. Use the Accordion Fancy Label die set to cut out light pink and dark pink cardstock panels, and three Shimmer Sheetz labels, as shown below. (One large dark pink label, one large light pink one, and one small light pink one.)

2. Use the Fancy Season Frame Edges die set to cut out four blue spotty cardstock edge pieces.

3. Use the Fancy Frame Edges die set to cut four dark pink plain cardstock edges, and four light pink Shimmer Sheetz scalloped edge pieces, as shown below.

4. Use the Flower Set 2 die set to cut out two flower layers and and one flower center.

5. Hand cut five small triangles for bunting/banner flags, and die cut a blue cardstock
“Happy Birthday”.

6. Stick a Funky Cakes Peel-Off sticker onto watercolour paper, and colour it in with some watercolour pens (such as Tim Holtz Distress Markers or Tombow Brush Pens) and a waterbrush pen, as shown by Els in this tutorial. Cut out the finished cake.

DSC_00837. Using a tape runner and glue pen, adhere all the card elements together, leaving the flower, cake, flags and the sticking of the two panels together till last.

8. Use small self-adhesive foam pads to stick on the flower parts and cake.

9. Use a small hole punch to make two holes in the side and bottom edges of the left-hand panel. Thread some twine through the holes, and secure it at the back with some sticky tape. Use wet glue to stick the individual flags to the twine.

10. Cut four more solid Fancy Frame Edge pieces of your choice (not shown in the picture) to adhere to the front of the accordion card when it is in closed position, to hide the ends of the twine and the tape securing it.

Karen Burniston Pop it Ups Designer Challenge – Christmas in July

July 16, 2014

Hi, it’s Karen Burniston with the July Pop it Ups Designer Challenge. Each month I challenge my Designer Challenge team to use Pop it Ups dies for a specific theme. This month the challenge was Christmas in July (or other winter holiday) and I made a second optional challenge to design a second card as a simple reproducible design. You’re going to love what they came up with for both parts of the challenge!

For my project, I wanted to teach a fun hybrid card called a Pivot Accordion, where I cut the Evergreen Pivot Card into the pages of the Fancy Accordion Album. Watch the video to learn this technique, which would also work with the Katie Label Accordion and House Pivot Card.

Here are some photos and additional details about the project made in the video. One of the nice things about all the pieces in the Holiday House die is that they can be combined in different ways to make smaller houses, too. For the front of the card I used just the smaller house, roof, door-as-a-chimney and window.

Pivot_Acc_Closed

Pivot_Acc_Open

When the card is opened you’ll see the full size Holiday House on Page 1, using all ten dies in the set. You can watch me assemble the Holiday House in this video:

Here is a top view of the Pivot Accordion plus a close-up of the trees. I didn’t mention this in the video but I used Copic markers to tint the glitter dots the same purple and blue colors as in the papers.

Let’s check in with the amazing Designer Challenge Team to see what they came up with for both simple and not-so-simple holiday cards. Each one of these creations is featured with more photos, information, supply lists and general instructions on the designers’ personal blogs. Click each name to see the blog posts for each card.

SIMPLE FLATS:

Did you know that there are currently 33 dies in the Pop it Ups Collection and of those, only 15 of them are interactive card dies?  The other 18 dies are accessory dies that will work great with the pop-ups, but can also be used on their own for flat cards and layouts.

Fran Sabad chose the new Outdoor Edges for a classy white and silver card front featuring a greeting stamp that works perfectly with the evergreen tree edge die. She cut the same edge from silver foil cardstock and offset it slightly behind the white one to create a detail shadow. What a great tip!

1_S_Fran_Outdoor_Flat

Donna Wright has an absolutely brilliant idea for maximizing card yield by using both the positive and negative sides of two die cuts, the Outdoor Edges and Merry Christmas dies. These are cards that would be both efficient and inexpensive to produce in multiples.

2_S_Donna_Flat2 2_S_Donna_flat

Caz Counsell used the new Chilly the Penguin die for this fun card front, also featuring the Outdoor Edges, the leaf from the Spiral Circle Pull Card, and a label made with the Agatha Edges. So sweet!

_S_Caz_Chilly

HOLIDAY PIVOT CARDS:

The new Evergreen Pivot Card is the fifth Pivot Card in the Pop it Ups collection. These dies are popular for their ease of use and for the way that they decorate the exterior and interior of the card with the same pivoting item. Many of the team chose to use Pivot Cards this month. Let’s see what they made.

Summer Hills-Painter used the Katie Label Pivot Card for a simple design suitable for any holiday. Here she shows both Christmas and Hanukkah. The snowflakes came from two other Pop it Ups die sets – the All Seasons Tree (smallest snowflake) and the new Spiral Circle Pull Card (two larger snowflakes). I always like to remind people that the accessory dies in Pop it Ups die sets are meant to be shared! Mix and match!

3_S_Summer_Katie_Xmas 3_S_Summer_Katie_Hanukkah

Raquel Mason shows that with the Evergreen Pivot card’s included decorator dies, you don’t need anything else! She made this entire simple, yet dynamic Christmas card using just the Evergreen Pivot Card set, which comes with the pivot card, three decorator trees, a die to cut 9 small ornaments, a die to cut 4 stars, a present and ribbon.

1_S_Raquel_Evergreen

Karen Aicken went a different route with the Evergreen Pivot card, focusing on an outdoor holiday scene with simple embossed green trees. She also used the snowflakes from the Spiral Circle Pull Card and the Outdoor Edges. These three die sets are used together on a lot of the challenge cards  this month. In the same blog post, Karen made a second Evergreen Pivot Card using glitter lines in fun designs to decorate the trees.

3_S_KarenA_Evergreen

KarenA_Evergreen

Helen Cryer used the same three dies as Karen’s green card – Evergreen Pivot Card, Outdoor Edges and the snowflakes from the Spiral Circle Pull Card. But check out the difference, not only between Helen’s card and Karen’s card, but between Helen’s card and Helen’s second, same-design-but-different-papers card! Ah the beauty of die cutting, where the colors, theme, textures, patterns and (in the case of Pop it Ups) placement is all up to YOU!

3_S_Helen_Evergreen1 3_S_Helen_Evergreen2

Caz Counsell and Frances Byrne also used the same three dies – Evergreen Pivot Card, Outdoor Edges and the snowflakes from the Spiral Circle Pull Card. They even chose similar stamps and themes, yet their cards are so unique. Caz chose to decorate her trees with the built-in emboss features and a few glittered ornaments. . .

3Caz_Evergreen

. . . whereas Frances chose patterned paper and brightly colored ornaments and stars. Both cards are knock outs!

Frances_evergreen

I’m sure you’ve already decided that the Evergreen Pivot Card is a must-have, but to seal the deal, check out how well it works with the tripling technique in this card by Fran Sabad. Once again you’re seeing the Outdoor Edges and the snowflakes from the Spiral Circle Pull Card used perfectly with the Evergreen Pivot Card. I just love Fran’s choice of red stars atop the trees.

Fran_Evergreen

Shelly Hickox used the Evergreen Pivot Card’s decorator trees to make 3D trees that can still fold flat for mailing. You’ll definitely want to check out her blog post to see a video of this card being opened. The Outdoor Edges work perfectly to create the rolling hills.

Shelly_Evergreen

Summer Hills-Painter created a very unique card using the doubling technique with the House Pivot Card die to create a double fence pivot card. Then she bent the outer portions of the fences back in line with the card so they are only revealed when the card is opened. Behind the fence she added the largest Evergreen Pivot Card decorator tree, cut from Honeypop paper to make an expanding 3D tree. The new Holiday House die set finishes off this masterpiece.

Summer_House

HOLIDAY GENERAL POP-UP CARDS:

The new Lorna Label pop-up die is the fourth die in the category of “general” pop-up, joining the Garden Bench, Lucy Label and Lots of Pops. General pop-ups are the traditional style where the pop-up is revealed only upon opening the card, like a magic trick.

Raquel Mason created a stunner with the new Lorna Label, using the two separate platforms to full advantage to animate the new Holiday House and decorator trees from the Evergreen Pivot Card set. This card has a beautiful front, too, so click over to give it a look.

Raquel_Lorna_House

Karen Aicken layered her way into a breathtaking Christmas scene using the Garden Bench die. She mixed in pieces from several more Pop it Ups – a practice I encourage! The Outdoor Edges die set makes a gorgeous backdrop combined with one All Seasons Tree with glittery branches. She used the Christmas lights from the Holiday House to adorn the bench and added Agatha Edging and the new ECD Holly Flourish die at the bottom. The greeting is a Katie Label.  So beautiful!

KarenA_Bench

Another stunner comes courtesy of Helen Cryer, who shows off several of the new releases from the ECD line (Els and Joset) like the Crystal Flowers, Holly border, Merry Christmas and Candle dies. She created her scene on the new Lorna Label pop-up die. I love that this card is made entirely with dies!

HOLIDAY ACCORDION CARDS:

There are two new Accordions in the Summer Release – the Ring Accordion and the Katie Label Accordion plus new Frame Edges to fit existing accordions, the Oval Clouds Frame Edges and the Fancy Seasons Frame Edges.

Kelly Booth shows off the new Fancy Seasons Frame Edges on this classy simple 2-page, 2-color Fancy Accordion card, which also features the Outdoor Edges and a decorator tree from the Evergreen Pivot Card die.

Helen Cryer‘s color scheme on this Ring Accordion card is simply beautiful. She added acetate panels to be able to “float” the new ECD Ornaments #3 die set, which works perfectly with the Ring Accordion. Once again the snowflakes from the Spiral Circle Pull Card work perfectly with other sets.

Raquel Mason created a super fun 3-page Ring Accordion with some very clever die combinations, like the holly leaves from the new ECD Candle die used as the hands for the new Clock & Gears die. She made a fun scene for Chilly the Penguin in the center panel with decorator trees from the Evergreen Pivot Card set and Chilly holds the strand of lights from the Holiday House.

HOLIDAY SPIRAL CIRCLE PULL CARDS:

The Summer Release includes a brand new type of die from me – the Spiral Circle Pull Card. This die combines the opening mechanism of a z-fold flip card with an optional interior spiral to create a pop-up. Two little tuck slots keep the card closed so you won’t get an accidental reveal. To open, simply pull.

Frances Byrne wanted to show two options with the Spiral Circle Pull Card. The first is a very simple flip card using a decorator tree from the Evergreen Pivot card. For her second version, she stepped up the design with a few additional elements, like the Holly Border die and the spiral, embellished with holly leaves and berries. Either card would be quick to make.

Kelly Booth made this adorable Spiral Circle Pull Card using a perfectly colored stamped image on the front, embellished tuck slots, and cute stamped envelopes flying on the spiral. With this die you’ll be able to choose your card size and placement along the fold.

Kelly Booth made another wonderful Spiral Circle Pull Card, this time with holly on the spiral that peeks out in the closed position. Then pull the card open and see the holly fly. (Check her blog for the “open” photos)

Donna Wright drops the mic with this AMAZING Spiral Circle Pull Card featuring a joyous snowman dancing on the spiral. The two larger snowflakes come included in the set and then Donna used the small snowflakes from the All Seasons Tree to fill the background with bejeweled snowflakes. What a fabulous card!

Happy Birthday Rubber Ducky

July 4, 2014

Hello everyone,

It’s Joset here today. I wanted to make a card using one of our new dies. Since the Rubber Ducky is my absolute favorite, I decided to use this die for my card. I also used the Accordion Fancy Label since the size of the label frame it perfect for the duck. I will explain the other products I used in the instruction and you can also find them in the supply list at the bottom of this post. I hope you enjoy today’s card.

Instructions:

1. Die cut Ducky’s body and 1 wing out of yellow paper. Die cut beak out of orange paper and floating ring out of green patterned paper. Adhere beak, wing and band as shown. Die cut 1 eye out of black cardstock and adhere using a small piece of adhesive behind the hole that was cut for his eye. Die cut another eye out of white cardstock to get the small white dot and adhere to the center of the eye.

2. Die cut 2 Accordion Fancy Label pages out of bright green cardstock and 2 out of the patterned paper. Cut the long side tab from the 2 patterned pages and the Fancy label on the inside to create 2 open frames. We’ll use one of the labels to decorate the inside of the card.

3. Die cut 1 Fancy label out of white cardstock using the largest accessory die from the Accordion Fancy Label set. Also die cut 1 smaller label out of Light Blue Metallic Shimmer Sheetz. This is one of the new color Shimmer Sheetz, available mid-July. Emboss with the Lots of Dots embossing folder and lightly sand the raised dots.

4. Die cut Happy Birthday from Yellow Velvet Adhesive Sheets. Die cut grass out of green cardstock using one of the new Outdoor Edges by Karen Burniston. These edges are so cool and can be used for anything, decorative borders, snow, rolling hills, to create a forest, etc. The set includes 3 different edges.

5. To decorate the front of the card, die cut 2 circle edges out of blue cardstock using the circle edge die included in the Fancy Seasons Frame Edges set. Die cut 2 more out of yellow cardstock.

Here you can see all the die cut pieces for the card (note: my 2 grass borders are not shown on the picture as I decided to add these later):

6. To assemble your card, attach the two bright green accordion pages using double-sided adhesive on the long side tab. Adhere all the rest of your die cuts as shown in the picture shown at the start of this blog post. Once you’re done decorating your card, attach the 2 small side tabs. Trim the small side tabs of your right page. For more info on how to assemble an Accordion Card, watch Karen demonstrating the cards HERE.

7. Adhere frame edges to the front of the card as shown in the picture below.

Karen Burniston Pop it Ups Designer Challenge – Photo Accordion Cards

June 18, 2014

Hi, it’s Karen Burniston with the June Pop it Ups Designer Challenge. Each month I challenge my Designer Challenge team to use Pop it Ups dies for a specific theme. This month the challenge was to create an Accordion Album showcasing a photo or photos.

For my video I wanted to show how to make Accordions with clear inner pages. I am using the new Katie Label Accordion die in the video. This die will be available in stores next month, so be sure to ask your favorite retailer to order it. You can use the techniques in the video with any of the Accordion dies, so don’t feel limited to just the Katie.

Topics covered in the video:

  • Showing off the Designer Challenge Team’s collaborative 11-page Oval Accordion album
  • Snipping tips for the accordion dies that come with stitching dies (Oval Accordion, Katie Label Accordion and Ring Accordion)
  • How to achieve a raised embossed stitch using an embossing sandwich
  • How to make clear inner pages for Accordion albums
  • Using brads to connect clear tabs
  • Assembling accordions in a layered sandwich style that hides the long tabs and the clear frames
  • How to repair an accidental break
  • Envelope sizes to mail Accordion Albums

Here are some photos and additional details about the project made in the video:

Counting_by_5s_closed

I made sure to add a solid white decorator label to the back of Page 2 so that when the album is closed the clear title will be easy to read against the white. I added the same colorful brads to the left side of the page to balance the ones on the right.

Counting_by_5s_open

My twins, Karl and Emma, are 15 years old and have certainly come a long way since being born seven weeks early (Emma was 4 lb. 9 oz. Karl was 2 lb. 9 oz.) to their current size (Karl is taller than me, Emma is getting close!) I thought it would be fun to show photos from their birthdays at ages 5, 10 and 15. Notice that Karl was still shorter than Emma on their 10th birthday. Clearly that changed in 5 years!

Counting_by_5s_closeup

Because I didn’t have a vertical shot of them at Age 5 I had to crop a horizontal one. I covered the seam with Glitter Borders. For the age numbers, I printed them on transparency and then outlined them with a silver paint pen on the back of the transparency before cutting them out. The brightly colored mini-brads are both functional and decorative. Some of them go through the small tabs to join pages together. I thought the visible brad prongs from behind the album added a festive touch to the album, almost like a colored staple, so I didn’t trim them. Instead, I just made sure I chose brads that had painted prongs.

Time to see what the incredibly talented Designer Challenge Team, plus three Guest Designers, created for the challenge. 11DC Team Album

This compilation photo accordion album is featured in the video. I asked each member of the team to create one Oval Accordion page. They were instructed to include a photo of themselves and their blog address on the page, but otherwise could design it with any colors, any theme, any embellishments. The results are fantastic! If you’re in any of my classes for the rest of the year you’ll be able to see it close up, as it will travel with me.

First let’s look at the albums the team had to choose from. Three styles are available now: Circle Accordion, Oval Accordion and Fancy Accordion. For each style there are optional companion frame edge dies that coordinate: Square w/Circle Frame Edges, Oval Dots Frame Edges, Oval Flourish Frame Edges and Fancy Frame Edges.

Accordions_now

Last week I posted a Sneak Peek Part 1 showing the first 10 of 16 new dies that will be available in stores July 15, 2014 as part of the Pop it Ups Summer Release. Included in that Sneak Peek were two new Accordion Albums and four new Frame Edge dies. The Designer Challenge Team received advance copies of the new dies and were allowed to use them for the Challenge if they liked.

SneakPeek1

All of the Accordion Album dies work the same and you can learn how to assemble them in this video. The beauty is that YOU decide how many pages to add to the album. They can be as short or as long as you like. For the projects below, I’ve sorted them by number of pages to illustrate the different looks. Click on each designer’s name to go to their blog posts to see more photos, instructions, supply lists, etc.

TWO-PAGE ACCORDIONS:

Helen Cryer made this two-page Circle Accordion project to give to her husband for his desk at work. She included recent pictures of the family on vacation. I think this is brilliant idea and will be making something similar for my husband’s desk!

2Helen_June_DC1

Karen Aicken‘s little grandson Ethan will be turning 2 soon so she made this very cute card using the Katie Label Accordion. She also mixed in the ECD balloon die. Notice the balloon string wrapped around the 2 – so cute!

THREE-PAGE ACCORDIONS:

Caz Counsell used the new Katie Label Accordion for a beautiful 3-page album featuring her niece’s wedding photos. She used the Butterfly Embossing Folder and Butterfly Accessory dies to create an elegant first page for the album.
3Caz_June_DC

Frances Byrne chose the new Ring Accordion for a Christmas album using photos of her granddaughter. The Ring Album comes with two sizes of ornament top die   as well. Frances did some clever combining of letter pieces to create the date.

3Frances_June_DC1

Jenn Dove is back this month as a Guest Designer and used the Circle Accordion for a three-page album featuring a brilliant cardinal and a great photo of the two of us in Yosemite last month. I love the color combo and the sweet sentiment.

3JennDove_June_DC

Jenn Mock is also back as a Guest Designer for this challenge and borrowed my Katie Label Accordion die to make this fabulous 3-page beach card with photos of her grandsons. The coral on page one is a section of the All Seasons Tree die – how clever!

3JennMock_June_DC

Kelly Booth also chose to use the new Katie Label Accordion for a 3-page SUPER card featuring her grandson dressed up as a superhero. She used the Katie Stars Frame Edges and mixed in decorator dies from the Katie Label Pivot Card. (Note: the decorator dies between the two Katie Label dies fit either die but do not duplicate, so they can be mixed for a ton of possibilities.)

3Kelly_June_DC2

Shelly Hickox made a beautiful and elegant Ring Album and turned it into a pocket watch with a clever addition of a printed winder and loop at the top of the first page. She used photos from her daughter’s wedding, turning them black and white for a timeless feel. You can see a Vine video of this card in action if you click over to her blog.

3Shelly_June_DC

Summer Hills-Painter shows how wonderfully Pop it Ups dies interchange with each other. Here she used the Katie Label Accordion but mixed in decorator dies from the Katie Label Pivot Card and Fancy Accordion. She also used the ECD Pumpkin die. Her two older boys look like they found the perfect pumpkins!

3Summer_June_DC1

FOUR-PAGE ACCORDIONS:

Raquel Mason created this wonderful mixed album using the Oval Accordion and the Katie Label Accordion. She also used the new Oval Clouds Frame Edges and a fun technique that Karen Aicken showed us for filling in the first page as a solid front to the album. Love these sweet beach photos of Raquel and her son.

3Raquel_June_DC1

Frances Byrne made a second project to focus on her grandson. What a fabulous mixed album! She mixed the Katie Label Accordion with the Oval Accordion, using perfect boy colors and elements to document William’s cubby construction.

4Frances_June_DC2

Helen Cryer made this fun 4-page Katie Label Accordion for her Dad. Starring in the photos are his parents, his bride, his kids and his grandkids – who wouldn’t love a gift like this?!

4Helen_June_DC2

Kelly Booth is the queen of color! This 4-page Fancy Accordion using the new Seasons Fancy Frame Edges is the perfect showcase for everyday photos of her grandkids.

4Kelly_June_DC1

Raquel Mason made a very unique 4-page Fancy Accordion by stacking two 2-pagers on top of each other! She used the new Poppy the Owl and Props 1 dies to highlight the silly photos she took with her son. What a great project!

4Raquel_June_DC2

Summer Hills-Painter recently had her third son and showcased her cute boys in this 4-page Fancy Accordion using the new Fancy Seasons Frame Edges. Awesome boy colors!

4Summer_June_DC2

Gretchen Schmidt also used the Fancy Accordion Album for a four-page album celebrating a four-legged friend. The crisp colors of this album are very striking. The scalloped frame from the Fancy Frame Edges die is a great choice.

4Gretchen_June_DC

SIX-PAGE ACCORDIONS:

Karen Aicken knocked my socks off with this fabulous blooming cactus Fancy Accordion project. She created a solid cover to the album. Click over to her blog to see it in the closed position. Great photos, great techniques!

5KarenA_June_DC1

Fran Sabad created a 6-page Oval Accordion using fun photos from a trip to Universal Studios. Notice the clever star garlands strung between the pages. She also embossed every page with the Trendy Tiles 1 Embossing Folder.

6Fran_June_DC

Donna Wright created a gorgeous 6-page Circle Accordion generations album, using the All Seasons Tree to set the scene. Such a lovely project and so powerful to see the women of Donna’s family going back several generations.

6Donna_June_DC

TWENTY-PAGE ACCORDION:

Sandy Diller drops the mic with this absolutely stunning, fantastic, awesome, amazing, impressive 20-page Fancy Accordion album celebrating her 50 years of marriage. You just really need to click over to her blog to read more about it and see the photo of it stretched out. ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! Thank you, Sandy for Guest Designing with us again.

Flower Label Accordion Card

April 28, 2014

Hi, Kelly Booth here! Have you seen the New Peel-offs by Elizabeth Craft Designs yet?
They coordinate with some of the Pop it Up dies just perfectly! When I got mine I could hardly wait to play. I’m often inspired by bright colors when it comes to flowers so I decided to make a 2 page Accordion Fancy Label card using one of the new Peel-offs.

1. Place 1 flower label peel-off and 1 flower leaf onto watercolor paper (I colored a second leaf and a flower center as you can see in the picture below but decided to use only the one extra leaf for my card).

2. Color Peel-offs with Tombow Dual Brush Pens and Tombow Blender pen. Use a White Gel Pen to create dotted pattern in flower.

3. Cut around the flower label and leaf.

JCiW5EIDi6EkY8uHFmoB_7ku27MjJ4ZNYHysmtV_THEB0CAsalwe48QGfeqvA1H70D-MXnYaYwGx9YRQLxNyhg-1

4. Die cut 2 accordion pages out of pink cardstock and stamp both sides using White Pigment Ink and a small dotted background stamp.

5. Die cut 2 more accordion pages, 1 out of white cardstock and 1 out of green cardstock, and cut out center labels.

6. Using one of the decorator dies from the Accordion Fancy Label set, die cut label out of white cardstock. Stamp Happy Birthday to You on label using pink ink.

jFJR9pgAdIPMwyRx39fOz8Ljb8I1nk2vZN-ZEq3TUWE

7. To create a sturdy card; Die cut 2 more accordion pages out of pink cardstock. Cut the long side tab from both pages and cut out center labels leaving just the accordion frames (see picture below). Stamp dotted pattern on each frame. Adhere these frames to your card last.

QlMKP5EHFNfVja6M8xgCYMESA-dxr-2AZYhSwc1kBeY

8. Adhere the 2 pages you cut earlier in step 4 together using strong adhesive on the long side tab of the left page (you can cut of the long side tab on the right page and the 2 smaller tabs on the inside but leave the 2 on the left page).

9. Adhere labels you cut in step 5 to the left and right page (white label left and green right). Adhere flower label peel-off and happy birthday label. Adhere leaf peel-off using foam dots to create extra dimension.

10. Use the 2 smaller tabs on the inside of the left page to connect both pages.

11. Adhere the 2 frames cut in step 7 on the outside of the card.

Fancy Label Accordion Cupcakes Card

March 24, 2014

Hello! Helen here from sunny England! (I’m actually writing this is advance, so the chances are it will be rather grey and blustery again by the time you read this!)

I’d like to share a card with you which features the delightful Cup Cake Peel-Off Stickers, on the Accordion Fancy Label Card.

I started by sticking some Transparent Double Sided Adhesive onto white card stock, and adding the peel-off stickers, then some Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter.  I then coloured in the stickers with the Copic markers pictured. Els has a great tutorial on the best way to do all of this, here.

I also wanted a glittered ‘Happy Birthday’, and achieved this by adding a strip cut from Double Sided Adhesive to some pink card stock. I added some Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter, rubbed it in with my finger, then die-cut the ‘Happy Birthday’.

Here are the die-cut elements I used for my card:

You can see that I cut four panels with the Fancy Label Accordion die, four borders for each panel with a Fancy Frame Edges die, and a middle layer for each panel (with one of the other dies in the Fancy Label Accordion set).

I lightly embossed each of these smaller layers with a different Elizabeth Craft Design Embossing Folder (which are listed at the bottom.) I also cut out the cupcakes, plus three extra little peel-off sticker candles, an extra ‘Happy Birthday’ from black card stock, and three little diamonds to go in the corner of each panel. (The diamond die also comes in the Fancy Label Accordion set.)

To give a little extra definition to each of my die-cut pieces, I inked the edges of them, with black ink on a sponge dabber.

I then adhered all the elements of my card, working on a panel at a time, and sticking the four panels together last. You can see below that I layered the pink glittered ‘Happy Birthday’ over the black one, to give a little shadow, and I also added a peel-off bow to the first panel.

I stuck the candles and cupcakes on with foam pads for extra dimension.

I thought my card would be finished then, but it looked a little plain, so I die cut some card stock flowers with the ‘Bunches of Flowers 1’ die set, and glued them over the little diamonds in each corner, along with a candy dot centre in each. I like how the little diamonds now look like leaves.

I hope you like my finished card! I think it will be perfect for my little niece’s birthday.
