Asian Flowers

September 14, 2014

DSC_0198-1Hi Everyone, it’s Jackie with today’s post. I have this passion of collecting all these fine papers, especially the Asian ones. I think these papers go well with the Asian Vases and the Asian Signs Peel-offs.

Instructions:

1. Cut blue cardstock 7″x 10″ rectangle; score and fold in half to create card base.
(5″x 7″ side-fold).

2. Cut blue Asian paper 4 3/4″x 6 3/4″ and adhere to card front using double-sided adhesive. Cut blue swirl paper 4 1/2″x 6 1/2″ and adhere on top.

3. Place Asian Vase Peel-off onto turquoise patterned paper. Fill the spaces in the three flowers with the black negative pieces from the peel-off sheet. Cut out the Vase.

4. Cut one label from Blue Iris Shimmer Sheetz using the Katie Label Accordion die. Reminder: Use the Metal Adaptor Plate when die cutting Shimmer Sheetz. The cutting side of the die faces the metal plate with the Shimmer Sheetz inbetween. Emboss label using Swirly Curves folder. Highlight the pattern with black StazOn ink. (Note: There are two sides to the pattern – make sure to ink the side with the raised OUTLINES, not the raised SHAPES – Refer to the photo)

5. Adhere all pieces, including blue mesh, to card front. Use foam tape or dots for added dimension under the vase, flower branch, and label.

6. Add Asian Signs Peel-offs at the upper right to finish the card.

The Color Purple

August 10, 2014

Our friend and frequent guest designer Judi Kauffman is back with a tutorial she’s calling
“The Color Purple” – interesting ideas, lots of inspiration as always!

Thanks, Joset. I gave myself a pastel challenge a few weeks ago, but I’m always happiest when using bright and quirky color combinations – especially if purple is in the mix. Royal purple, lavender, amethyst, violet, plum, mauve, lilac, orchid, I even like puce!

Instead of projects with detailed instructions, this blog post is devoted to having fun with the color purple. And my not-so-hidden agenda is to encourage everyone to use color combinations that are way outside of the comfort zone.

Purple can be the star of the show (vases, a dress).

Purple can be an accent (wings, a background or border.)

Whether you use a lot or a little, it’s a color well worth exploring in depth.

If you’re a novice just gaining confidence with your color choices, allow me to posit a few questions:

What do you notice about my color combinations?
What do you like, what do you dislike? Why?
What do you think influenced my color choices?

To answer the last question first: Everything I see is a potential source for a palette, but for these projects I looked at flowers (Mother Nature has the super jumbo assortment of markers in her studio!) and at art history (two of the color combinations have roots in Impressionist paintings).

How did you answer the other questions?

Color is a matter of personal taste. I find it fun to reach for orange, pink, red, purple and olive, someone else might find that combination jarring.

Could you learn to enjoy colors that aren’t what you usually use? Would adding them to projects one at a time make sense, or would it be more fun to jump off the deep end, make a big splash?

I asked you to take note of my color combinations so you can use them as shown, select only some of what you see, or reject them altogether and go in a totally different direction.

Spend some time with the color purple this week!

Play with markers, pencils, paint, spray mists, paper and cardstock (patterned and solid colors). If you wind up with finished cards or a calendar that would be great, but it’s not necessary. The projects aren’t as important as taking time to experiment. Outline peel-offs in Black make it easy and fun.

Keep going:

Pick a different color for each of the next few weeks. With budget in mind, add to your collection of pencils, pens, and other supplies a few items at a time. Many manufacturers sell open stock so you can buy only one marker or one sheet of cardstock and then buy more when you find favorites.

Asian Vases Pop Up Card

June 4, 2014

Hello everyone,

It’s Joset here today with a Asian theme pop-up card. I love the Asian Vases Peel-offs. This design has been in the Elizabeth Craft Designs collection for a while, but is still one of my favorites. I used the Lots of Pops die and some new patterned paper I received. You can follow my instructions below. I hope you enjoy this tutorial.

To create the card:

1. Cut blue patterned paper at 5 1/4 inches x 10 1/2 inches, scored at 5 1/4 inches. Fold in half. This will be your card base.

2. Cut yellow patterned paper at 4 3/4 inches x 10 inches and score at 5 inches.

3. Place Lots of Pops at score line and die cut. Use wash tape (or other low-tack tape) to keep die in place.

4. Pop up the 2 center pops leaving the 2 outside pops flat.

5. Adhere pop-up card to the inside of your card base.

6. Cut 2 pieces of the yellow patterned paper to 5 1/4 inches x 2 inches. Adhere to the outside of the card as shown in the picture below. Also cut 2 scalloped circles using one of the accessory dies from the Accordion Circle Card. Adhere one to the front of the card.

7. Place 1 Flower Vine Peel-off on the front of the card. Add Glitter Dot Peel-offs to the center of the flowers.

8. Cut a piece of white card stock big enough for 2 vases and put double-sided adhesive on top. Remove release sheet and place it upside down on your work table (shiny side up)

9. Place 2 Asian Vase Peel-offs upside down on release sheet (sticky side up). Take your white cardstock and place it with the adhesive side facing down onto the stickers. Take off release sheet and cover the adhesive with Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter. Polish with your finger and use a brush to brush off the excess glitter. Return excess glitter to jar.

10. Color peel-offs with alcohol markers and carefully cut around each vase after coloring.
Add three Glitter Dot Peel-offs across the bottom of the small vase. Adhere vases to the pop-ups as shown on the picture of the finished card below.

11. Place 1 Flower Vine Peel-off behind the top vase as shown. Peel off some of the leftover negative parts of the leaves from the sticker sheet and place them back in the leaves (one half of each leaf will now be filled in). Add Glitter Dot Peel-offs to the center of the flowers.

12. Die cut Thank You out of Black Velvet Adhesive Sheet and adhere to scalloped circle (the second circle that was cut in step 6). Add a Glitter Dot Peel-off to each scallop. Adhere circle towards the left of the card, as shown. Use double-sided adhesive under the bottom of the circle and foam tape under the top to create dimension. (The circle will tilt up at an angle.)

13. Using the Sticker Transfer Sheet, lift and move the negative parts of the flower from the top vase (leftovers that remain on the Peel-off sheet) onto the card at the bottom right. Watch Els demonstrating the Sticker Transfer Sheet HERE.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and thank you for stopping by! Please feel free to leave a comment or ask questions.
