Gate-fold Birthday Card

September 12, 2020

Hello! Diana here with a monochromatic birthday card for a dear friend of mine. She is such an elegant older lady that I wanted to convey that same elegance in the card – so I broke out some shimmery ribbon and pearls.

This card ended up being a square 5 3/4″ by 5 3/4″. On the page to buy the Gatefold – Elegant Roses die is a great YouTube tutorial oh how to create the gatefold. I used a lavendar cardstock for the gatefold and some one- sided designer paper for the inside of the card. I folded the 5.5″ x 11″ paper in half so that the inside of the card is white. I added a row of pearls to the top and bottom of the folded inside.

Now the inside flips open to showcase the message inside.

To decorate the inside, I used the Butterflies Spray stencil (you can also make your own by die cutting the Butterflies Spray from cardstock and using the negative) and sponged a light smattering of butterflies in purple ink. I also stamped the sentiment “Have an awesome day” and balloons from the Happy Birthday collection. From a slightly darker purple paper, I die cut Happy Birthday as well as the butterfly from the Butterfly Flourish die set.

I used Copic markers and a white jelly pen to color and add details to the stamp and die cut.

The butterfly above the ribbon is also adorned with the same pearls as the row under the gatefold.

Thank you so much for looking!

Masculine Gate-Fold Card

August 7, 2014

Good morning! It’s Karen Aicken here and I have a masculine birthday card to share today. Gate-Fold cards have been around for a long time, but it’s also been a long time since I’ve made one!

1.  Cut your patterned card stock 5-1/2″ tall and 8-1/2″ wide, as you would for a standard A2 card.

2. With the 8-1/2″ side at the bottom of the scoring board, score a vertical line at 2-1/8″ from each side. Note: The ScorePal has markings on it to make a Gate-Fold card! The two sides fold forward, meeting at the center front to create an A2 sized card.

3.  Cut decorative panel from patterned card stock (3-1/4 x 4-1/2) and ink edges with brown.

4.  Cut white card stock (2-3/4 x 4″) and lightly stipple with blue ink and ink edges with brown.

5.  Die cut the sprig from Kraft card stock and lightly ink edges.

6.  Cut two pinecone base from Kraft card stock and two overlays from brown. Adhere the overlays to the bases and set aside.

7.  Add the white panel to the decorative panel, then arrange/adhere the sprig and one pinecone as shown. Lay this now finished decorative panel on the front of your Gate-Fold card, centering it as shown. Make light pencil marks on the back to show where to add the adhesive. You only want to adhere it to one front panel. It looks like it’s attached to both sides, but then the card wouldn’t open.

8. Thread a button with Bakers Twine and attach to the panel with Glossy Accents.

9.  For the inside, cut a decorative panel  (4 x 5-1/4″) and ink the edges. Attach inside, centering it between the two folds  and the top & bottom edge.

10. Cut a white card stock panel measuring 3-1/2″ x 4-3/4″. Using the Happy Birthday Stand Up Helper die cut the words across the top edge. Trim the panel at both ends of the bar beneath the words. Stipple panel lightly with blue, ink edges with brown, and add fine line details to the letters with a fine nib black marker.

11.  Stamp greeting on this white panel and adhere the 2nd pinecone as shown.

Gate-Fold cards are quick and easy to make, and give your standard  A2 cards just a little something extra for the recipient. I hope you will get out some Elizabeth Craft Designs dies and make one yourself!
