Christmas Treat Holder Doorhanger

October 6, 2015

ECDChristmasDoorHanger1wm2

Hi everyone,

It’s Frances Byrne here. Earlier on in the week on my blog I posted a Halloween Treat Holder Doorhanger for a challenge I do. With Christmas edging closer, I thought it would be fun to create a Christmas version of this which included instructions. This can be used to give a Christmas treat of some kind or even a small gift. It can be hung on a door handle or if you prefer hung on a Christmas Tree.

ECDChristmasDoorHangerwm2

Here is how I created the card:

  1. Cut a piece of red cardstock so it measures 4 1/4 inches x 12 inches and another piece that is 4 1/4 inches x 3 1/2 inches.

ECDChristmasDoorHanger3wm

  • Take the larger piece of red card and using the tag edge from the Tags & More 9 – Sparkle die set place this as close as you can to one edge of the card and run through die cutting machine.

ECDChristmasDoorHanger5wm

  • Place the card so the straight edge of the card is in the corner of your scoring tool and score piece at 3 1/2 inches and 4 1/4 inches.

ECDChristmasDoorHanger6wm

  • Next score the smaller piece of red card at 1/2 inch; 1 1/4 inches; 5 1/2 inches and 6 1/4 inches.

ECDChristmasDoorHanger7wm

  • You should now have two pieces of red card that look like the photo above. Apply adhesive to the back of the smallest piece and attach it to the front of the back panel so that the bottom of the piece is lined up with the score lines. Note: by placing the solid panel to the hanger piece as instructed above we will be able to hid any joins with our designer paper.

ECDChristmasDoorHanger4wm

2. Take a piece of designer paper that measures 4 1/4 inches by 7 3/4 inches (note: I used paper from a 6 x 6 paper pad so mine is shorter as long as the paper goes past the opening it will work). Using the tag edge from the Tags & More 9 – Sparkle die set place this as close as you can to one edge of the card and run through die cutting machine.

  • Remove the tag edge die from the paper and position the decorative edge die so it is level with the curved shape of the tag and run through your die cutting machine.
  • Adhere the designer paper to the back panel of your hanger piece.

3. Create the hole in the back panel of the door hanger so it can be hung on a door or tree by die cutting a solid shaper (circle, heart, ornament). As this one is Christmas themed I die cut the solid ornament from the Ornaments 2 die set.

  • Optional: Cut a slit from the left edge of the hanger to the side of the ornament so the slit is at an angle. Cut another slit slightly down from the first so you have a tiny gap. Note: Whether you do this step will depend on where you intend to hang the completed hanger, if you are going to hang on a large knob type door hanger you will need to do this otherwise you can omit this step if preferred.

ECDChristmasDoorHanger2wm2

4. Apply adhesive to the tabs of the side pieces and attach them to the front panel to create the box to hold your treats.

5. Apply a piece of Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the front of a piece of white card which is  measures 4 1/4 inches x 3 inches. Place the wavy edge (snow) from the Outdoor Edges die set onto this card so it is approx 1 1/4 inches up from the edge of the card. Place the Merry Christmas die on the excess piece above the wavy edge and die cut.

  • Remove the protective backing from the die cut pieces. Cover the adhesive with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter, polish glitter with your finger and brush excess off.
  • Attach pieces to box using photo above as placement guide.

6.  Apply a piece ofTransparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the front of a piece of green card approx 6 inches x 5 inches. Using the 5 Part Pine die set die cut the following:

  • 2 each of the three middle sized tree pieces
  • 1 of the largest tree pieces

7.  Carefully remove the protective backing from the top portion of each of the tree pieces so that the bottom part is still protected and cover adhesive with Spring Peridot Silk Microfine Glitter, polish glitter with your finger and brush excess off.

  • Remove the remaining piece of protective backing and cover with Forest Green Silk Microfine Glitter, polish glitter with your finger and brush excess off.
  • Note: If preferred you could have snowy branches by substituting Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter in place of the Forest Green color. If you wish to do this, apply the Warm Diamond to the trees first and then the green so avoid contamination of your clear glitter.

8.  Decorate the trees by attaching Red/Gold Glitter Dots Peel Off Stickers to them.

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you enjoyed my tutorial.

Merry Christmas with Jolly!

September 26, 2015

Hi everyone! Helen here with you today, with a nice and simple Christmas card, featuring Karen Burniston’s beautiful new Merry Christmas Pop Up die set, and Jolly the Mouse. If you like making all your own Christmas cards, September is not a bad time to start!

Helen Cryer - 1

Here’s what I did:

1.  Cut a red piece of cardstock to 14.2cm x 20.2cm, (5.5″ x 8″) and a turquoise piece of patterned paper to 14cm x 20cm. (5.25″ x 7.75″) Fold both in half, and die cut the turquoise piece with the Merry Christmas Pop Up die. Cut 2 strips of red polka dot patterned paper to 3cm x 14cm, and 2cm x 14.2cm. Cut some red Shimmer Sheetz to 2.5cm x 14.2cm. Die cut all the pieces for a Jolly the Mouse, as shown below (though missing from the photo are his glittery tail, and candy cane). Also die cut a Father Christmas hat for Jolly, using dies from the Props 5. Die cut ‘Merry Christmas’ words and the two little swirls from red Shimmer Sheetz. Die cut the four little hearts, and the large swirl from silver glitter card. Use stamps from the Merry and Bright stamp set, as per below.

Helen Cryer - 2

Here are Karen Burniston’s Pop It Up products which I used:

Helen Cryer - 3

2.  Fold the Merry Christmas pop-up according to the package instructions (or watch Karen’s assembly video) and adhere the turquoise patterned paper inside the red cardstock. Adhere the red words and swirls, and silver glitter pieces. Adhere the folded ‘Happy New Year’ banner with foam pads. Adhere the 3cm x 14cm red polka dot patterned paper to the foot of the card as shown below. Assemble Jolly the Mouse, and his candy cane as shown below, and adhere to the card. Assemble the Father Christmas hat, and also adhere to the card.

Helen Cryer - 4

3.  For the outside of the card, stick on the remaining red polka dot patterned paper, and red Shimmer Sheetz strip, then adhere the two stamped pieces as shown below. Adhere a red gingham bow near the sentiment.

Helen Cryer - 5

And you are done! I hope you enjoyed my card today, and feel inspired to have a go at making a Christmas card too!

Mono Printed Christmas Card

September 22, 2015

Hi! It’s Marsha again! This time I have a Christmas card to share!

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Monoprinted Christmas Card

I had this image in my head that I just had to try. I printed a couple of these, some in traditional Christmas colours and some in a more pop arty colour scheme. I happen to like the latter best, so that’s what I’m going to show you today!

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Monoprinted Christmas Card

Step 1. Die-cut a stencil out of a transparency using the solids from the Poinsettia die set. Keep the cut-outs, those will be used as a mask. Die-cut three of the poinsettia overlays too.

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Monoprinted Christmas Card

Step 2. Cover a 6×6 inch Gelli Plate with neon yellow acrylic paint. Place the poinsettia overlays and the small solid poinsettias on the paint.

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Monoprinted Christmas Card

Step 3. I cut Soft Finish Cardstock to 8.5 x 6 inches so I could line up the cardstock to the Gelli Plate perfectly. Pull your print. Clean the Gelli Plate and let the print (and masks) dry completely.

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Monoprinted Christmas Card

Step 4. Cover the poinsettias on the print with the solid poinsettia masks. I use a repositionable dots runner to temporary adhere the masks to the print.

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Monoprinted Christmas Card

Step 5. Cover the Gelli Plate with a turquoise acrylic paint. Make sure the paper is aligned with the Gelli Plate. Pull your print.

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Monoprinted Christmas Card

Step 6. Stencil in the small poinsettia shapes on the print with the handmade poinsettia stencil, using a neon pink acrylic paint and a make-up sponge. I like to stencil these a little bit off-set, but you can also align them up perfectly!

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Monoprinted Christmas Card

Step 7. Use fine liners and markers to doodle in and around the poinsettias.

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Monoprint Christmas Card

Step 8. Trim the mono print to fit your base. I trimmed mine to 5.3 x 5,3 to fit a note card of 5.5 x 5.5 inches.

Step 9. Machine stitch along the edges of the card.

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Monoprinted Christmas Card

Step 10. Die-cut letters out of sticky backed fun foam (or make your own using Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape), die-cutting from the adhesive backed side. The aim is to create mirrored letter stickers that you can adhere to a piece of cardboard or clear plastic.

Step 11. Stamp your sentiment to the mono print twice: once with a neon pink acrylic paint or ink and the second time slightly off-set with a darker colour.

Step 12. Adhere the mono print to the card base using Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape.

This type of card can be adapted to any occasion. Just trade the poinsettias for another die with matching overlay and you are good to go!

Happy printing!

Marsha

Pop it Ups

Oh Christmas Tree!

August 22, 2015

ECDTreePivot1wm

Hi everyone,

It’s Frances Byrne here today with another Pop It Ups project to share with you.  With Christmas now being only 125 days away, I figured it was time to add another Christmas card to my stash. This card uses the Katie Label Pivot Card with the Christmas Trees from the new Christmas Tree Pop Stand Card set and the Paris Edges die set.

Here is how I created my card:

ECDTreePivot2wm

1. Score a piece of 12 x 12 designer paper at 6 inches. Adhere a piece of Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to one of the 12 x 6 inch sides remove protection backing and fold designer paper so it is now 12 inches x 6 inches.

  • Trim card down so it measures 12 inches x 4 1/2 inches.
  • Score card at 6 inches, fold card closed and use bone folder to reinforce fold and then reopen.
  • Place the pivot die from the Katie Label Pivot Card die set so that the center nubs of the die are on the score line, closer to the top of the card. Run through die cutting machine.
  • Fold card so that the pivot part of the card folds the opposite way to the rest of the card.

2. From the Katie Label Pivot Card set die cut the following:

  • 2 x large labels from red card
  • 2 x second largest label from white card

Using the Merry & Bright Clear Stamp set stamp the “Merry Christmas” sentiment to one of the white labels and the “and Happy New Year” to the other white label.

  • Layer the white labels to the red labels and then adhere these to the pivot section of the card using foam tape.

3. Cut two pieces of card approx 2 inches x 5 1/4 inches. Position the decorative doily die from the Paris Edges set so that the bottom of the die is approx 1/2 inch from the edge. Die cut.

  • Place Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back portion of the 1/2 inch edge of the card and carefully adhere this to the right edge of the open pivot card, so that it is centred top and bottom and that the 1/2 edge of the die cut is level with the edge of the designer paper. Trim top & bottom edges of the die cut so it is level with the card.
  • Repeat this with other Paris Edges decorative doily on the left hand side of the card. Tip: Position the second one so it is level with the one already attached to the card and carefully close the card so that the cut out pieces of both die cuts match.
  • Adhere a Red/Gold Glitter Border Sticker so it covers the join where the designer paper and red card meet. Do this on all sides of your card (ie: front, two insides and back)

4. Using the Tree dies from the Christmas Trees Pop Stand Card set die cut 2 of each of the tree pieces from green card stock. Sponge around edges of trees using green ink.

  • Die cut 4 of the tree trunks using brown card.
  • Assembling the Trees: Note – these are assembled slightly differently to how Karen Burniston assembles the tree for the Pop Stand Card so that we can still achieve the 3D look on a solid surface.

ECDTreePivot6wm

  • Apply a thin strip of glue around the edge of the solid tree and adhere it to the tree with the tree shaped hole in the middle. Adhere the brown trunk over the green one on the outline tree. As per photo above.

ECDTreePivot7wm

  • Now take the two trees with the notches and slots and thread the tree which only has notches through the middle slot of the other tree. You may need to bend one of the top triangles of the first tree to do this.

ECDTreePivot8wm

  • Next thread one half of one of the 3D trees through the slot of the large tree. Turn the tree over to the back side and places some adhesive to one side of the half tree, fold this over and adhere it to the back of the tree.

ECDTreePivot9wm

  • Turn tree back over and fold the inner trees so that you have the middle  tree standing upright and the other two trees are sitting on either side of the tree.

ECDTreePivotwm

5. Adhere the Christmas to the front of the card using foam tape.

  • Attach Red/Gold Glitter Dots Peel Off Stickers randomly over the Christmas tree to resemble ornaments.
  • Cover a piece of white card with Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the front. Use the star die from the Christmas Trees Pop Stand Card set and die cut star. Remove protective backing from adhesive and cover with Silver Silk Microfine Glitter, burnish glitter with your fingers and attach star to the top of the tree using foam tape.

ECDTreePivot5wm

  • Repeat the process with the second Christmas Tree and attach this to the right hand side of the inside of the card.

ECDTreePivot4wm

6. Using the two “inner” trees which were created when die cutting the largest of the trees, adhere these to the left hand side of the inside of the card, slightly overlapping the trees. Add the brown tree trunks to the bottom of each tree.

  • Decorate the trees using Red/Gold Glitter Dot Peel Off Stickers.

ECDTreePivot3wm

Here is a look at the back of the card. One of the things I love about Pivot Cards is that no matter which way you view the card there is always something of interest to look at.

Blue Christmas

August 20, 2015

ECDBlueChristmaswm

Hi everyone,

It’s Frances Byrne here. Today I am bringing you a project using some of the new Elizabeth Craft Designs dies to create a Christmas decoration that can be displayed. For this project I used the new Tags and More – 9 Sparkle die set, Alphabet 2 – Lower Case, Ornament Set 5 and the Card Stand/Easel, along with a couple of older dies sets.

ECDBlueChristmas2wm

Here is how I created my Christmas Tag Decoration:

1.  Cut a piece of blue card and a piece of white card that measures approx 4 1/2 inches x 8 inches (we will be cutting this down so it doesn’t need to be exact).

  • Line up the main tag die from the Tags & More 9 – Sparkle at the top of the blue card stock and die cut. Snip off the excess cardstock around the top of the die and then use your trimmer to trim off both sides to make them even with the top part of the die. Trim tag shape so it is 7 1/4″ long.
  • Place the snowflake decorative overlay die from the same die set at the top of the tag so that the rounded shape of the overlay lines up with the rounded shape of the tag and die cut.
  • Adhere a piece of Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the front of the white card stock and place the main tag die from the Tags & More 9 – Sparkle and die cut. Trim of sides of tag as we did for the blue tag above.
  • Remove the protective backing from the white tag and adhere this behind the blue tag being careful not to touch the adhesive close to the top of the white card.
  • Cover the adhesive which shows through the top of the blue tag with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter, polish glitter with your finger and brush excess off.

2.  Adhere a piece of Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the front of a piece of white card stock. Trim so the card measures 3/4 inches x 4 1/2 inches.

  • Remove the protective backing from the adhesive.
  • Cover the adhesive with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter, polish glitter with your finger and brush excess off.
  • Adhere strip approximately 1/4 inches from the bottom of the tag. Trim of any overhanging edges level with tag.

3.  Adhere a piece of Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the front of piece of thin white card approx 2 1/5 inches x 8 1/2 inches.

  • Remove protective backing from adhesive.
  • Cover the adhesive with Silver Silk Microfine Glitter, polish glitter with your finger and brush off excess.
  • Use the Alphabet 1 Caps die to cut cut the letters “M” and “C”
  • Use the Alphabet 2 Lower Case die to cut the following letters: ‘e’; ‘r’; ‘r’; ‘y’; ‘h’; ‘r’; ‘i’; ‘s’; ‘t’; ‘m’; ‘a’; ‘s’
  • Starting with the letter ‘s’, adhere the letters of the word “Christmas” onto the white glittered strip at the bottom of the tag so the letter ‘s’ is close to the right hand edge of the tag.
  • Starting with the letter ‘M’ adhere the letters of the word “Merry” so that the bottom of the letters touch the top of the white glittered strip at the bottom of the tag so the letter ‘M’ is close to the left hand edge of the tag.

ECDBlueChristmas4wm

4.  Cut a piece of white card large enough to die cut two solid hearts from the Ornament Set 5 die set. Cover the front of the card with Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape. Die Cut two solid hearts.

  • Cut a piece of Silver Shimmer Sheetz large enough to die cut two lattice decorative overlay hearts from the Ornament Set 5 die set. Die Cut two lattice decorative overlay hearts. Make sure to use the metal adaptor plate when die cutting Shimmer Sheetz.
  • Remove protective backing from adhesive on the solid hearts.
  • Attach the Shimmer Sheetz decorative overlay to the solid heart being careful not to touch the adhesive on the solid heart with your fingers.
  • Cover the adhesive with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter, polish with your finger and brush off excess.
  • Die cut two of the large hangers from the Ornament Set 5 die set from Silver Shimmer Sheetz (adhere a piece of Transparent Double Sided Tape to the back of the Shimmer Sheetz before die cutting). Attach the hangers to the top of the heart so heart looks like a decoration.
  • Adhere the two hearts to tag referring to photo above using foam tape.
  • Using blue ribbon, create two bows and attach to the top of each heart ornament as per photo above.

5.  Cut a piece of white card stock approximately 1 3/4 inches x 5 inches. Adhere Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the front of the white card.

  • Remove protective backing from adhesive.
  • Cover the adhesive with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter, polish with your finger and brush off excess.
  • Die cut 3 of the smallest snowflakes from the Snowflakes  die set.
  • Attach snowflakes to tag using photo above for placement.

6.  Decorate the Lattice Heart Ornaments; Snowflakes and the snowflake overlay at the top of the tag using Blue/Gold Glitter Dot Peel Off Stickers. (Note: I have used the glitter dots on the swirls as well as the lattice portion of the heart ornament.)

ECDBlueChristmas3wm

7.  From a piece of blue card stock die cut the Card Stand/Easel. Emboss Card Stand/Easel using the Snowflakes Embossing Folder.

8.  Place the tag ornament onto the Card Stand/Easel.

Merry Christmas

August 9, 2015

IMG_4587

Hello everyone,

It’s Jackeline here. For my project today I created a Christmas tag using some of the new dies from The Els van de Burgt Studio Collection.

Let’s Started:

1. Cut two rectangle pieces 8″ x  4 1/4″, one in red cardstock and one in patterned paper.

2. Place the tag top die from Tags & More 9–Sparkle  at the top of both pieces and run it through your die cutting machine to create the tag shape.

3. Use the decorative overlay die from Tags & More 9 Sparkle to die cut the swirly pattern at the top of the tags, only on the patterned tag.

4. Adhere the patterned tags to the red tag using double side adhesive. Decorate with red glitter dots.

5. Apply a piece of Transparent Double-Sided Tape to white cardstock large enough to die cut the two silhouette poinsettia using the new die from Els’s Collection Remove release sheet and cover  with Solar Gold Silk Microfine Glitter. Polish and brush off excess glitter.

6. Die cut two overlay poinsettia in yellow cardstock. To create the leaves, die cut two silhouette poinsettia in green cardstock. ensemble, and  decorate the center of the poinsettia with some gold glitter dots.

7. Die cut a piece in red cardstock  using the Ribbons & Jewels die. Cut this piece in three, decorate with some red glitter dots and add them behind the leaves.

8.  For the sentiment apply a piece of transparent Double Sided Tape to Gold Shimmer Sheetz large enough to die cut Merry Christmas using a combination of the  lower and upper case alphabet dies.

9. Die cut the stand/easel in green cardstock using the new die from Els Studio Collection.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.

A Way With Words

A Way With Words

August 7, 2015

Hi everyone,

It’s Els here today!

And what an exciting day it is, as we welcome Suzanne Cannon, Quietfire Design to Elizabeth Craft Designs as our third licensed designer. To welcome Suzanne, we are holding a fantastic competition over on our Facebook page. If you would like to win all twelve of the new Quietfire Design dies, you should check out our Facebook page for details of how to enter (and hopefully win!) If you can’t wait to be the proud new owner of all twelve of these new dies, don’t worry because you can get them for a steal on our website.

In this post, I will be sharing a collection of cards using the new Quietfire Design dies, named ‘A Way With Words’. Suzanne’s beautiful dies are so elegant, very versatile and can be used for both simple projects or more complicated (more decorated) projects. For the background of all my cards I used Elizabeth Craft Designs’ Silk Microfine Glitter and Elizabeth Craft Designs’ Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape, both of which are available on our website. For the first card, I used a masking technique and I’ll show you how I created the card in the step by step instructions below.

IMG_5993

1. I used our Clear Double Sided Adhesive 101 mm tape role. First apply a piece of the tape to white cardstock 4″ x 5 1/4″. Remove the release sheet and safe this to die cut a variety of snowflakes using the Elizabeth Craft Design Snowflakes die.

IMG_5962

IMG_5967

2. Apply the die cut snowflakes to the adhesive, Elizabeth Craft Design logo facing up. Make sure not to touch the adhesive as this will leave marks in your glitter. Use a piece of release sheet to press down the snowflakes on the adhesive.

IMG_5969

3. Cover the adhesive with Bluebell Silk Microfine Glitter and brush off the excess.

IMG_5970

4. Polish glitter with your index finger, this will make the glitter shine.

IMG_5978

5. Carefully remove each snowflake using the Elizabeth Craft Design Fine Pointed Tweezers.

IMG_5979

6. After removing all the snowflakes, cover exposed adhesive with White Silk Microfine Glitter and brush off the excess (don’t polish the white glitter).

IMG_5980

7. Adhere glitter piece to the front of a white top fold card.

8. Die cut one Merry Christmas from black cardstock backed with Elizabeth Craft Design Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape and one from Elizabeth Craft Design Silver Metallic Shimmer Sheetz backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape as well. Make sure to use the Metal Adaptor Plate when die cutting. Adhere both greetings to card front (use black Merry Christmas as a shadow for the Silver Metallic Shimmer Sheetz).

9. Add Silver Lines Peel-Offs around snowflakes piece.

IMG_5984

I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial and will try this technique yourself. The elegant words and greetings dies from the ‘A Way with Words’ collection are a beautiful combination with Elizabeth Craft Design’s Silk Microfine Glitter or Shimmer Sheetz.

Baaaa Humbug…

August 5, 2015

Hello everyone, it’s Donna Wright here today. I am very pleased to be here again, this time showing you some lovely new dies from Karen’s Farm 2 and merry & bright collections. As there are only 142 sleeps to Christmas I thought I would get you into the Christmas spirit with this adorably grumpy goat.

baaa humbug ecd 5 augsut 2015 goat

I used the goat rather than the reindeer you can also get from the Merry & Bright collection as it fitted so nicely with the words Baaa Humbug in the speech bubble from Karen’s accordion rectangle die set.

After applying plain cardstock to a double sided adhesive sheet I cut the goats horns, nose and the blade of the sleigh then sprinkled the pieces with pewter microfine glitter. I used brown patterned paper to cut out the goat overlay and black cardstock for the goats body.

baaa humbug ecd 5 augsut 2015 speech bubble

I used a half inch strip of acetate to make it look like the white cardstock speech bubble was suspended in place above the goats head. I hand wrote the Baaaa Humbug with the calligraphy pen I received as a Christmas present. I need to practice cursive writing more!

baaa humbug ecd 5 augsut 2015 label

From the Katie label accordion die set I cut two labels in red card stock, one with double sided adhesive applied to it and one plain. I stuck them together slightly offset and sprinkled red microfine glitter on the lower one. I secured the label in place with one of my coloured mini clothes pegs.

baaa humbug ecd 5 augsut 2015

I then cut one piece of patterned Christmas card 12×6 cardstock fold it in half, placed it unfolded on the cutting plate with the gift card holder pop up die in the centre position assembled my cutting sandwich and ran it through the machine. (Watch a video tutorial for the Sleigh Gift Card Holder.)

Using red cardstock I cut one sleigh from the sleigh die set.

After applying red cardstock to double sided adhesive I cut one sleigh overlay die and sprinkled red microfine glitter on it.

I hope you enjoy my tutorial for this quick and easy card…

A Way With Words

Die Cut & Doodle

August 2, 2015

By Judi Kauffman

Thank you for inviting me to be today’s guest designer. My projects illustrate a super simple approach to cardmaking: Die Cut & Doodle! There are only three steps:

  1. Die cut any of Suzanne Cannon’s A Way with Words Collection words or greetings from solid color cardstock that you’ve backed with double-sided adhesive sheet.

8-2-2015-B

  1. Position the word or words on a contrasting color top-fold card base. The card base can be a solid color (Happy Birthday), a cardstock rectangle on top of a patterned card base (Believe), or a card base topped with a die cut oval (Season’s Greetings, Merry Christmas).
  1. Doodle around the words with a white opaque pen as shown or in any light opaque color(s) you prefer. Doodle on the lettering, too, as shown on the Season’s Greetings card shown below.

8-2-2015-C

Don’t worry if your doodling isn’t perfect. The point of making marks is to have a good time, to create something that is clearly hand-done, that is evidence of a human brain at work. (Practice on scraps of cardstock if you don’t want to doodle on the card until you feel confident.

Don’t stop at the four dies shown – there are eight other options in the collection from which to choose.

TIPS:

*Do all of the die cutting at one time so you can make a big batch of cards and spend a long afternoon or evening (or weekend…) doodling patterns and designs.

*Create your own patterns and designs or search for them in books or online.

*Develop your own pattern “vocabulary” using your favorite marks and shapes. I love using lots of dots and small circles, as well as scallops or sharp zig zags, leaves and flowers, and abstract shapes. The more you doodle the more patterns you’ll develop and the easier and faster it will become. Though speed is not a goal, it’s nice to develop a rhythm.

*Position words at an angle or parallel to the top and bottom of the card base. Words can be arranged on one or more lines. Some of the dies have words that are connected (Happy Birthday, Season’s Greetings, Merry Christmas) but the other nine consist of one or more words that can be arranged as you choose, and they can be mixed among the sets. For example: Best Friends; With Best Wishes.

*Use more than one color for the doodling.

*Add gems, peel-offs, or other small dimensional embellishments. (Keep the embellishments small so they enhance but don’t overwhelm the doodling.)

Pop it Ups Karen Burniston Designer Challenge – Homegrown Holidays

July 15, 2015

Hi, it’s Karen Burniston with the July Pop it Ups Designer Challenge. Each month I challenge my Designer Challenge team to use Pop it Ups dies for a specific theme. This month the theme is “Homegrown Holidays”and the challenge is to create holiday cards with a country/farm feel. The team received brand new dies to use just in time for the challenge – the *NEW* Farm 2 collection and the *NEW* Merry & Bright collection. Each collection features 6 new dies and a coordinating 4″ x 6” Clear Stamp set. Both collections are shipping in two weeks (first week of August, 2015) to independent craft stores worldwide. A full collection preview can be found on my blog here: Sneak Peek 2015 Summer Pop it Ups Release.

This month I did things a little differently. Rather than make a card start to finish, I wanted quicker “how to assemble” videos for the new dies. Over the next week or so you’ll see new how-to videos showing up on my YouTube channel so that by the time the new dies ship the first week of August, 2015, there will be assembly videos for all the new pop-up dies. Today I’m focusing on the Farm Collection. Here are two new videos – one for assembly of all six Farm Characters and another for assembly of the Fence Pop Stand.

Since many of you probably watch my videos here on the ECD blog or on my blog or Facebook, you may not know that my YouTube channel has a Playlist for assembly videos. I only add a video to this playlist if, within the video, it explains all the assembly steps for a die. You can find that playlist here: Pop it Ups How to Assemble

Now that you know how easy it is to assemble the Characters and the Fence, take a look at seventeen amazing Homegrown Holidays/Country Christmas cards by the Designer Challenge Team. For each card you can click on the designer’s name to head over to their blog post for more photos, supply lists and basic instructions.

Frances Byrne adapted the video tutorial for the floating floor barn card to use with the Christmas Trees Pop Stand instead. She added the Fence, Snowball the Sheep, Props 5 and the Merry & Bright Clear Stamps. Her blog shows additional photos and details. Amazing!

Karen Aicken made this sweet card using the Pop Stand die from the Hay There set to animate a Character, in this case Jolly the Mouse wearing the Props 5 Santa hat. She also used Jolly’s candy cane and the Outdoor Edges. Adorable!

Kelly Booth made a super fun country Christmas card using lots of dies combined into a fun scene. She used the Fence Pop Stand, Evergreen Tree, Cheepers the Chicken, Props 5, Outdoor Edges, Merry Christmas, Western Edges, Jolly’s candy cane, the star from the Christmas Trees and the lights from the Holiday House. This is a great card to illustrate how well die sets from the Pop it Ups collection can be mixed and matched into amazing combinations.

Caz Counsell shows in this next card how nicely the Characters work to decorate card fronts. No need to reserve them just for pop-ups and interactive cards. Here she has Cheepers the Chicken, Snowball the Sheep, Virgil the Pig and Brownie the Cow, along with Props 5. What a bunch of Characters!

Fran Sabad has been making the cutest little mice cards using Jolly the Mouse. This adorable card uses the Christmas Trees Pop Stand and the flourish from Merry Christmas, along with two Jolly mice. Eeek! This is so cute!

Raquel Mason does a fabulous job of telling a story with her cards and this one is no exception. William the Goat stands in a glorious country western landscape on the card’s front, featuring the Western Edges, Christmas Trees and Fence. Then, when the card is open you discover William eating a present from under the tree! So funny.

Sandy Diller is our monthly DC guest, but this month she had a Designer Challenge Challenge by not having the new dies yet, so she got creative and chose a beach scene for her Christmas card instead of a country scene. The lights (from the Holiday House) in the Palm Tree are terrific!

Summer Hills-Painter can craft a scene to perfection! She made two amazing scenes in one amazing card. The front features the Barn, Fence and Cocoa the Horse (plus the wreath from the Holiday House) and the inside features the Sleigh, Snowball the Sheep, Cheepers the Chicken and Brownie the Cow. Sensational!

Karen Aicken is clever, clever, clever! She started with a fun country snowman paper and then fashioned her own matching snowman by altering Chilly the Penguin, Props 1 and a Cheepers the Chicken beak! Brilliant! She also used the Merry & Bright Clear stamps and the Tags Pivot Card. The pen detailing on the sleigh is marvelous.

KA_Card_PIU_ChillySnowman_7

Frances Byrne dressed up Brownie the Cow in both the Christmas costumes included in Props 5. She used the Merry Christmas die inside and added the barbed wire from the Western Edges top and bottom for a more country feel. And of course the clever “to moo”. I love the gingham paper as a backdrop – sets the scene marvelously.

Raquel Mason has a fabulous technique for the front of her second challenge card. She first used an embossing sandwich to press the Chicken Wire die into the cardstock. This brought out all the perfectly-spaced hexagons as an embossed pattern. Then she sunk a die-cut chicken wire piece down into the groove. Love that! Cheepers the Chicken is asking if you are a naughty or a nice egg, and then inside the card is the Merry Christmas pop-up (notice the egg!) with another piece of chicken wire. Perfect interpretation of the theme!

Donna Wright cut several pop stands into a 12″ wide card to be able to make this fabulous Holiday House and Christmas Trees scene. She also used the Tags Pivot Card for the tags plus the stamps and the Merry Christmas die. Such a great illustration of how the Pop Stands can be used anywhere (and multiple times) in a card.

DW_july country karen challenge copyFran Sabad made this adorable card with three stacked Jolly the Mouse Characters working together to trim the tree. She used the Christmas Trees Pop Stand die for the tree, embossing and stacking it to make it tall. So adorable!

Caz Counsell made a fun Christmas on the Farm card by focusing on the different holiday spirits of the animals. William and Rudy are quite festive, whereas Snowball is . . . not! Ha ha. Great card.

Shelly Hickox‘s latest “Shellypiece” is this amazing country Christmas scene. Her fence technique is fabulous, spanning the card so it pops up as well. She also used the Barn, Evergreen Pivot Card and Western Edges. A video on her blog shows the card opening and closing. So pretty!

Karen Aicken made this lovely country kraft & red card featuring the new Merry Christmas pop-up die. Her signature “high trees” backdrop looks fabulous behind the pop-up and she embellished with the Merry & Bright Clear Stamps and snowflakes from the Sleigh die.

While it is true that I am completely biased, I would argue that the Designer Challenge team is one of the most talented group of bloggers, teachers, crafters in the industry. I feel very blessed to have these eleven designers creating with my products. They certainly take the dies in directions that I never even imagined during the design process. Plus they’re just really nice awesome supportive people. I am so lucky to call these ladies my friends.

Join us next month on August 12, 2015 for the next Designer Challenge, called Inspired Creations. Everyone is looking forward to this challenge, where we each get to pick a challenge card by a fellow teammate from any Designer Challenge and use it as inspiration for a new project. The inspiration can be a technique, a combination of dies, a color scheme – anything! Not only will this be a fun challenge, but a great chance for the team to show how to take inspiration and translate it into something new.

Happy Crafting!
