Clean and simple cards with basic dies

July 9, 2021

Hello everyone, it’s Sanna here today with another guest design team project. This card idea originated from a wish to have a die that could cut chevron type backgrounds, which I didn’t own. But then I figured, I actually could use my existing dies to create a chevron pattern as a card background. And while I die cut the “chevrons”, I had plenty of pieces left to create two more fun cards. So one basic idea led to a set of cards that I’m quite happy with.

Here is how I created this card:

Step 1: I first die cut “frames” with the Stitched Rectangles die set by using the largest and the third largest die from the set. This way I had a bigger frame than if I had used the next to largest with the biggest size. I picked yummy, summery pastel cardstock for die cutting. I also kept the stitched rectangle pieces for later. You will see how I used them on the two cards to follow.
Step 2: After die cutting the frames I then took a card base and arranged the corners onto it in such manner, that they formed a “chevron” and marked the edges with a pencil. This way it was easier to know where to cut later. After that I just adhered the piece onto the card base with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape. Out of each frame I got two bigger parts for the chevron pattern and I also saved the smaller ones for the lower and the higher corners. So for this size of a card you only need 4 frames in total.

Step 3: After adhering all the corners onto the card base I took the Planner Essentials 21 “Note Pieces” set and die cut a focal point for the card from black cardstock.

Step 4: I then added a stamped and embossed sentiment using the Planner Essentials “Remember” stamp set with neon green embossing powder. After that I just adhered the sentiment with 3D foam onto the card to create more texture and interest. For finishing touches I added a few craft drops for decor. The residue pieces then let to the second card:

For this one I did the following steps with the residue papers I had left over from my first card:

Step 1 to 3: I placed the stitched rectangle cardstock pieces onto my die cutting machine and places a stitched oval die onto the middle of them and die cut 4 pieces to create the oval background piece for the next card. After that I took a leftover strip of the light blue cardstock and attached Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet onto it and die cut two “Budding Florals” for the card.

I then adhered the flowers on place, applied some liquid adhesive and loose golden glitter onto the upper area of the buds and let that dry. After the adhesive was dry, I just tabbed the residue glitter off. For the sentiment I used the General Sentiments stamp set with white embossing powder and a piece of black cardstock that was die cut with the Fitted Fishtail dies. Very easy, but still very colorful thanks to the multi-colored background piece. This then led to my last card project:

For this card I used the final stitched rectangle pieces, as shown in the steps here:

Step 1 to 3: I arranged the leftover pieces from the previous card onto the card base and cut them into size so that they filled the whole background. Then I die cut a focal piece from white cardstock using the Stitched Circles die cut die. I stamped and embossed a sentiment (using General Sentiments) and florals (using the Spring Fling stamp set) and golden as well as light green and pink embossing powders.

After embossing I inked the circle light yellow with Distress Ink. Next I die cut a piece of golden glitter carstock with the Scalloped stitched circle die to place under the sentiment piece and finished the focal piece off with some Fitted Fishtail dies.

So one idea led to a set of three fun cards and I basically worked with the same paper pieces from start to finish. Here are some close-ups of the finished cards:

I hope I could inspire you to take a second look at your basic dies to use them in a little different way! I´d love to see what kind of ideas you come up with. Wishing you a fabulous July and see you again next month with another card idea!

Happy crafting,
xxx, Sanna

Hey Crafters! Katelyn here, sharing with you my Remember the Now Planner Page.

To create my Remember the Now Planner Page, I’ve used a variety of the dies from the Planner Essentials Collection and Joset Designs. You’ll want to read below as I share with you how to recreate my planner page at home.

Step One. You’ll need to choose five pieces of coordinating winter patterned papers. From the Planner Essentials 28 – Globe die, die cut the page out of one of the patterned papers. Ink the edges of the page using Walnut Stain Distress Ink and a blending tool with foam.

Step Two. Next, you’ll need the doily reinforcements from the Reinforcement Variety Pack 2. Die cut the doily reinforcements once out of a second piece of patterned paper. You’ll need a total of six reinforcements. Ink the edges of the reinforcements using Walnut Stain Distress Ink and a blending tool with foam.

Step Three. Die cut a 1 3/4″ Diagonal Stitched Fishtail out of a piece of White Soft Finish Cardstock. Ink the edges of the fishtail using Walnut Stain Distress Ink and a blending tool with foam.

Step Four. From the Planner Essentials 8 die, you’ll need the ragged edge die. Flip the first patterned paper over and die cut the ragged edge die out of the paper. Cut the edge down to 7″. Ink the edges of the edge using Walnut Stain Distress Ink and a blending tool with foam.

Step Five. From the Planner Essentials 21 – Note Pieces die, you’ll need the 2 5/8″ note piece and 2 7/8″ note piece. Die cut the 2 5/8″ note piece out of the third piece of patterned paper. Die cut the 2 7/8″ note piece out of the fourth piece of patterned paper. Ink the edges of both pieces using Walnut Stain Distress Ink and a blending tool with foam.

Step Six. From the Reminiscence Book, you’ll need a piece of cream paper and a piece of dark green paper. From the Planner Essentials 16 – Christmas Tree Page, you’ll need to the two full trees. Die cut one of the trees out of the cream paper. Die cut the other tree out of the dark green paper. Ink the edges of the trees using Walnut Stain Distress Ink and a blending tool with foam.

Step Seven. Now, you’ll need the two matching arrows from the Planner Essentials 29 – Directions die. Die cut one of the arrows out of the dark green paper. Die cut the other arrow out of the second piece of patterned paper. Ink the edges of both arrows using Walnut Stain Distress Ink and a blending tool with foam.

Step Eight. From the Planner Essentials 34 – Christmas Figures die, you’ll need both trees. Die cut the cut out tree out of a piece of White Soft Finish Cardstock. Die cut the plain tree out of a piece of green paper from the Reminiscence Book. Apply Emboss It Ink to the cut out tree. Sprinkle Iridescent Shimmer Embossing Powder over the entire surface of the cut out tree. Tap off the excess powder and emboss with a heat tool. Ink the edges of the plain tree using Walnut Stain Distress Ink and a blending tool with foam.

Step Nine. Choose a label from the Planner Labels die. Die cut the label out of White Soft Finish Cardstock. Apply Chipped Sapphire Distress Ink to the Remember the Now stamp from the Planner Essentials – Remember Stamp Set and stamp on the left hand side of the label. Ink the edges of the label using Walnut Stain Distress Ink and a blending tool with foam.

Step Ten. Die cut the 3 1/2″ Stitched Rectangle die out of of the photo.

Step Eleven. Adhere the doily reinforcements over the circles on the page.

Step Twelve. Foam square the fishtail 1 1/4″ from the left and 1″ from the top of the page. Use adhesive and foam squares to adhere the ragged edge piece 1 1/2″ from the right and 1/2″ from the top of the page.

Step Thirteen. Adhere the 2 5/8″ note piece 1 3/8″ from the top and 3/4″ from the left. Use adhesive and foam squares to adhere the 2 7/8″ note piece 1/8″ from the right and 2 3/4″ from the top of the page. Adhere the green arrow 1 1/4″ from the top and 1 1/2″ from the right of the page. Adhere the cutout tree to the plain tree. Use adhesive and foam squares Use adhesive and foam squares to adhere the tree slightly over the right hand side and 1 1/8″ from the top of the page.
