I Love Summer

July 4, 2016

I love summer 1

Hello everyone, it’s Christine here from Susan’s Design Team. Well summer has finally arrived and that makes me very happy as it seems like we have waited a long time for this. Flowers blooming, birds chirping, peeps peeping and yes the warm weather….oh how I love it!

Today my post is a 6″ X 6″ pop up card using Susan’s CountryScapes dies for the pops. The Nantucket Arbor has been altered to give it a rustic look which is actually my style of gardening. If you came to my garden you would find lots of old watering cans, bicycle, wagon, wheelbarrow, old washing machine and old pails being used as planters and of course a little Yorkie. Enough about me and more about the card.

Let’s get started. The finished card is  6″ X 6″ .

  •  Cut White Soft Finish Cardstock 5-3/4″ X 11-3/4″, score at 5-7/8″, fold and open again.
  •  Using Karen Burniston’s Lots of Pops die, place on the fold making sure the alignment nubs are over the fold, then die cut.
  •  Using Susan’s CountryScapes Clouds & Grass dies cut templates from heavy cardstock.
  • Take cloud template and blue PanPastel (Phthalo Blue Tint used here) using a makeup sponge loaded up with color, lay the template at top of card and wipe across the template. Move template and repeat staying close to the edge of the template all the way down to where you want the grass to begin. When you get to the pop ups you will want to make sure the top of the pop ups are green grass. You can have as many or as few clouds as you want. Susan has a video on clouds and grass which can be found here.
  • Now take the grass template and Bright Yellow green PanPastel you will be swiping downward towards the template then slide template slightly left or right just until you see white again and rub sponge down again repeating until what is covered. Then move template down the paper and repeat to the bottom of the card.
  • Close card and work the pop ups folding them over at the score lines and popping them to the inside all but the very top small pop up which we are not using.
  • Cut Soft Sky Soft Finish Cardstock 6″ X 12″ score at 6″ and fold so the blue is the outside of the card.
  • Add Clear Double Sided Adhesive to back of the insert piece avoiding the pop up areas. Adhere to inside of card base. It is easiest to do one side at a time making sure to line up folds exactly.
  • Cut 2 Nantucket Arbors from brown cardstock. Cut off gate and narrow up the posts on inside of arch just a little.  If you place one on top of the other and trim both at the same time they will line up perfectly. Adhere 1 on top of the other. Cut 1 Oval grapevine Wreath from same brown cardstock.  Cut branches from the brown cardstock using  new Bouquet Stems & Branches die set. I cut the branches several times. Using clear drying glue add cut pieces to arbor to bulk it up a little. The curved pieces from wreath I used on the top of the arbor.  Some of the branches will stick out too far so just trim them off.
  • Cut Wisteria stems/vine from light brown cardstock twice adhere one on top of other with clear drying glue.  You can add a little ink for shading if you wish. Take a piece of white Soft Finish Cardstock and with 2 shades of purple PanPastels randomly sponging color over paper filling in all the white (you want variation. Violet Tint from set 1 and Violet from set 2 used here). Die cut florets approximately 10 times from this cardstock.  Lay florets onto a hard rubber mat (I have found that a Speedball Carving Rubber works very well and is larger than an eraser giving you more space) take smallest ball tool from Susan’s tool kit and slightly cup each one. Using clear drying glue attach in clusters (approximately 16-18 per cluster) to stem/vine. Glue to the arbor.
  • Using CountryScapes Woods 3 Wheelbarrow die set cut three wheelbarrows – 1 from dark brown cardstock, 1 from Through The Lens – Wood Series cardstock and 1 from gray cardstock ( gray one you only need the wheel and brace underneath the rear). Glue patterned paper one on top of dark brown one. Cut wheel and brace from  gray one then cut spokes out of wheel leaving just outer wheel glue on top of the patterned paper lining up the wheel and brace exactly.
  • From CountryScapes Backyard 1 cut geranium leaves and stems twice from green cardstock and geraniums twice from red cardstock. Lay the geraniums right side down on molding mat and using medium ball tool lightly rub the back of each giving it a little dimension glue to the stems then glue to the wheelbarrow.
  • From CountryScapes Backyard 1 cut watering can 3 times – 1 from black cardstock, 1 from Through The Lens – Metal Series paper and 1 from gray cardstock (you only need nozzle from gray). Glue patterned paper one on top of  black one then cut nozzle only from gray one and glue onto patterned paper.
  • Cut Yorkie from white cardstock using die from CountryScapes Critters 5 color using markers or PanPastels.
  • Cut 3 small ladybugs from white cardstock using die from Garden Notes Bugs & Butterflies then color using markers.  Shape slightly and attach to wisteria.
  • Using Clear Double Sided Adhesive attach arbor and wisteria to the two small outer pop ups. Attach the wheel of wheelbarow to very front pop up.  Using a pop dot attach  watering can to right front of the largest pop up and the Yorkie pop dot to the base of the wisteria.
  • Using Susan’s Seeds of Thought stamp Lie on the Grass and black ink stamp onto the grass area of the card.I Love Summer 2
  • From white Soft Finish Cardstock and using the two largest dies from the Stitched Squares cut a square frame add Clear Double Sided Adhesive to back and attach to front of card.
  • From Black cardstock cut the “i” using the exclamation point from the A Way With Words – Calligraphic Elements 1 die set trimming it up and cuttting the dot off.  glue to card front.  Using heart die from same set and red cardstock cut heart and attach to card front centered under the “i”. Using black cardstock A Way With Words – 4 Seasons die set cut Summer and adhere to card front.
  • Cut clouds from white cardstock and cloud die from Rainbow Sky attach one directly to card front and pop other one with a pop dot.
  • Cut Sun from same die set using either white card stock and color with PanPastels (which was done here) or cut from yellow cardstock. Adhere to card front using pop dot.
  • Cut Jasmine flower three times from white cardstock using Susan’s Garden Notes Jasmine die. Cut stamen from yellow card stock three times and cut several leaves and 1 stem from green cardstock. Using yellow from PanPastels set 1 shade center of each flower. Lay flowers face down on molding mat take small loop tool and pull down each petal turn over and with small ball tool push down in center to cup. Spread a little glue along the bottom of the stamen and  roll up. Fan out stamens. Add a little glue to bottom and attach to center of flower. Lay leaves face down on leaf molding pad and using leaf tool draw vein down center of each turn over and using yellow-green PanPastels add shading down the vein line. Attach to lower right corner of card front and  attach flowers. Add a few more leaves.

Queen Anne’s Lace and Roses

February 1, 2016

QA Lace and Roses 2

Christine here from Susan Tierney-Cockburn’s Design Team posting a card featuring Susan’s new Garden Notes Queen Anne’s Lace die along with Rose 2 from her first release of dies. Susan has so many fantastic dies.  I also used a couple of Els’s newly released dies, too: Fitted Frames 4 Curvy Ovals and Stitched Ovals.  It is funny how it seems that everything is “coming up roses” in the posts lately.

Here is how I made the card. I like to make all my components first before any assembling.  The card base is 5″ X 7″.

  1. Starting with the Queen Anne’s Lace die, cut 2 each of the flower bases for each flower (I did 3 flowers) from medium green cardstock.  Also cut several leaves and the stamen from the same cardstock.  From White Soft Finish Cardstock (85#) cut the florets about 8 times.  Using white PanPastels shade your leaves and flower bases to give them a muted look.  Put vein lines in the center of the leaves and pinch them up with fingers to give them dimension.  Attach 3 florets to each cross area on the flower bases using a clear drying glue.

Pop it Ups Karen Burniston Designer Challenge – Home for the Holidays

December 16, 2015

Hi, it’s Karen Burniston with the December Pop it Ups Designer Challenge. Each month I challenge my Designer Challenge team to use Pop it Ups dies for a specific theme. This month the theme is to interpret the phrase Home for the Holidays. The team will definitely put you in the holiday spirit with their beautiful creations, celebrating the warmth of home and those special memories we create with the people we love.

FireplacePopUpBoth

For my card and video I wanted to celebrate Santa’s arrival by creating a pop-up fireplace with dangling boots. The Props 6 cowboy boot dies work just perfectly (with slight modifications) to make Santa’s boots and also to make stockings for the front of the hearth. The fireplace itself is made using the Lots of Pops die, plus an added hand-scored insert strip to line the fireplace and hold the boots. Learn all the steps to making your own fireplace card by watching this video tutorial:

Because the fireplace is bulky and will want to spring the card open, I chose to create a magnetic fold-over flap at the bottom to keep the card closed. I used the Props 5 Santa hat sticking out of the chimney top for the front of the card plus a strip of “Merry Christmas” washi tape across the flap.

FireplacePopUpCardClosed

When the card is opened the fireplace pops up and Santa’s boots dangle in the fireplace. Other decorations include a candle made from the lower portion of the Lots of Pops pole plus a flame, greenery and berries from the Els van de Burgt Studio Candle die set. Santa’s boots and the stockings are made by snipping away the toe of the cowboy boot (and the heel for the stockings) and then creating a cuff with one of the banners in the Lots of Pops die. The two stars that come included with the Props 6 set layer nicely in Shimmer Sheetz to create the star garland. Rudy the Reindeer’s wreath is glued to the wall behind the candle with a Shimmer Sheetz mirror inlaid inside the wreath to reflect the candle. No Santa card would be complete with the word “Believe” and the Quietfire calligraphy die was the perfect choice.

FireplacePopUpCardOpen

Here is a side view of the card showing how the boots are hanging inside the fireplace. It’s a very easy technique and the video shows how to do it. I also created a very simple box platform from cardstock for behind the candle. As I say in the video, the decorations for the fireplace are completely up to you. Dig around in your stash and see what you have. Could you make a plate of cookies? A glass of milk? How about ornaments, greenery and lights atop the mantel? Personalize the card by writing names on the stockings.

FireplacePopUpCardSideView

The finished card measures 5.5″ wide by just under 5″ tall and can be mailed in an A7 envelope. Extra postage will be required because of its thickness.

Ready to make your own Santa’s arrival card? Here’s what you’ll need:

Frances Byrne created this cozy holiday home using the Adirondack Chair Pop Up plus a host of other decorator dies from various sets. The Holiday House and Outdoor Edges combine for a festive card front and the Merry & Bright Clear Stamps create the greeting. I love how she made the calendar!

FB_KBDCChristmasDay1wm

Fran Sabad went to the country for this amazing Home for the Holidays creation. She assembled several Characters for the card front, including Brownie the Cow, Cheepers the Chicken, Jolly the Mouse, Snowball the Sheep and William the Goat. The background is the Outdoor Edges and she also used presents from the Sleigh die and the Props 5 Santa outfit.

FS1_PIU-Christmas-front

Open the card and the garland (made from Rudy the Reindeer’s wreath) carries inside where Cocoa the Horse uses it to decorate the barn. I mean brilliant! Fabulous card!FS2_PIU-Christmas-open

Caz Counsell interpreted the theme a little differently for her project. She wanted to use Pop it Ups to decorate her own Home for the Holidays. Perfect! It’s a great project, too, with Gift Card Accordion pages (embellished with Flourish Gift Frames) strung together with Rudy the Reindeer, Fancy and Katie Labels. Love it!

CC_home for holiday 2

Karen Aicken really set a wintry scene with this soft pretty card combining the Christmas Trees Pop Stand die with the Holiday House die. By using a pop stand in the center, Karen was able to animate the house just like the trees. I want to visit this house for sure!

KA_Card_PIU_KBDC_TreesHse_5

Sandy Diller says “Merry Christmas, Ma’am!” with this mighty fine western holiday landscape. She created a floating floor inside the card to allow for the Holiday House, Christmas Tree and Fence dies to be animated in different locations. I love the siding on the Holiday House with the barn front door. Perfection!

SD_combo photo

Raquel Mason will make you go Awwww! with this adorable mouse house. She used the Barn Pop Stand, also with a floating floor so she could animate items throughout the card. Jolly the Mouse wears the Santa Props 5 and the Holiday House die’s door and string of lights work perfectly to give Jolly’s home a festive feel!

RM_KBDC Dec Home for the Holidays 2

Summer Hills-Painter made a mansion from the Holiday House on this festive card featuring the Flourish Gift Frame for the front of the card and the Merry Christmas pop up inside. I love the doubled window, traditional colors and crisp, classy feel of this card.

SHP1_Dec 2016 Closed SHP2_Dec 2015 Open

Kelly Booth wanted to welcome friends and family home for the holidays with a festive front door. She created it on the Rectangle Pull Card and cleverly combined decorator Katie labels and ovals for the trim and used the slot die from the upcoming Oval Pull Card for the door handle. The new Pull Card Edges allow for shadowed paper placement and Kelly used Rudy the Reindeer for door decor. I also love how she stacked up several cuts on the Merry Christmas to make a faux-chipboard greeting.

KB_Watermarked Photo 1 (2015-12-13-2148)

Fran Sabad created a mousey wonderland! Jolly and his neighbor meet to go a’caroling outside their picture perfect brick houses. The structure is the House Pivot Card with the tripling technique and Fran also added many accessory dies to set the scene. Fa la la la fun!

FS_PIU-House-Pivot-02-open

Helen Cryer is the queen of pop-up gingerbread house cards and this card certainly shows why! She used the Holiday House die, expanded into a gingerbread mansion, on pop stand dies to make a standing pop-up scene. Absolutely gorgeous! Helen is taking a break from the team to focus on a very exciting new adventure – she’s a new Fire Fighter! How cool is that?! We will miss her on the team, but hopefully we can convince her to do some guest spots with us in 2016. Congratulations, Helen!

Shelly Hickox made this beautiful woodland inviting scene, complete with Holiday House turned log cabin, shrink plastic Rudy antlers (adorable!) and Evergreen Pivot trees turned into stamps, textured with real foliage! See a video of this card opening and closing on her blog plus read all her tips for making this card.

SH_shelly hickox pop it ups xmas cabin

Caz Counsell created a very fun card front featuring Jolly the Mouse, contentedly sleeping in his cozy nest. Caz joked that perhaps Jolly had indulged a bit at the holiday party, or perhaps he is dreaming of sugarplums. I love how Caz created the frame using the Circle Accordion and then ringed it with the Els van de Burgt Studio Leaves & Berry Branches for the perfect little nest.

CC_jolly

Karen Aicken made this wonderful tri-panel card featuring the Evergreen Pivot Card. She added the extra flap to the right side of the card that opens up to reveal the Holiday House, a prancing reindeer from the Merry & Bright Clear Stamps, and a sweet greeting. Such a clever card design and so elegantly pretty.

KA_Card_PIU_KBDC_PivotEGreen_5

Frances Byrne made a ton of clever adaptations in this fun gingerbread house standing card. By turning the Rectangle Pull Card sideways it becomes a cool standing card. Frances created a gingerbread man by combining pieces of two Character dies. So many great ideas in this card!

FB_KBDCGingerbreadHouse1wm

Kelly Booth made this sweet card using the Holiday House to decorate the front of the card and the Christmas Trees Pop Stand die inside. I just love the crisp colors and textured styling to everything. Check out her blog to see a flat card made with the Holiday House die as well.

KB_Watermarked Photo 2 (2015-12-14-1110) copy

Sandy Diller made this cute little decor piece using two brand new dies shipping in January. She used a new Character die, Baker the Beaver, and the fun Props 8 set, which included the Chef’s hat, heart, spatula, slice of cake and fork. Awww. Bakers gotta bake!
