Wednesday With Shelly – Pop it Ups Double Z-Fold Card

March 15, 2017

Hi all! It’s Shelly Hickox with you today, sharing a fun alternative way to use your Pop it Ups Iron Fence Die. I’m always a huge fan of finding new ways to use my favorite dies, and when I saw the cool pop-up Double Z-Fold cards that have been popular lately, I thought the Iron Fence would be perfect to adapt for this fold.

Magical, right?! What I love is that it will fold completely flat for mailing, and shouldn’t require any extra postage. You can go crazy with the fussy-cut embellishments like I’ve done here, or keep it simple. Read on to see how to make one of your own.

1.  Cut two fences using the Pop it Ups Iron Fence die. Trim the end post from the left side of one of the pieces. Add a strip of Elizabeth Craft Designs Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the post as shown and adhere the other fence piece to the post, lining up the points, creating an 8 1/2″ long fence.

2. Cut a piece of cardstock measuring 8 1/2″ x 4 1/4. Score down the center. Score the left side at 2 1/8″ (the halfway point of the left side). Fold as shown. Score the fence in the same way, but adding the second score line to the right side.

3. Decorate the panels as desired. Adhere the fence to the card as shown. Cut a strip of coordinating paper and fold it in the same way as the fence. Adhere to top of card. This strip serves two purposes: Decorative, and to stabilize the top of the card.

4. Die cut the birds and branches from rust, blue, and green cardstock using the Lovebirds die. Cut the leaves from the green cardstock and the birds from the blue and adhere over the brown branch. Attach to card as shown in photos below.

5. To add even more dimension, cut two strips of clear acetate, fold ends to create tabs, and attach to card as shown. Cut leaf sprigs from green cardstock using the Leafy Branch die. Layer with fussy-cut flower pieces and attach to strips, making sure the card can easily open and close without any pieces getting stuck.

6. Add additional leaf sprigs and fussy-cut butterflies to complete the card.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my take on the Double Z-Fold card. There are so many different ways they can be styled – I can’t wait to make another one!

Great card. Please explain how the acetate tabs are folded to create continuing “pop.”
Hmm, are they not tabs but strips attached to the fence and side/back?
    Thanks!

Thanks, Cynthia! I cut the strips about 1/2″ longer than the opening created by the popped out fence, then folded the ends 1/4″ to create tabs. One end of the tab was adhered to the card, and the other end to the fence. The strips will fold with the card as its closed. I hope I understood your question and answered it. Please let me know if you still have questions!
