Roses, Beads, and Butterfly Card

Designed by Mary Dimercurio Prasad for the Elizabeth Craft Designs DT

Creating the Card

The last card I posted was a bit involved so I thought I would simplify for my second post! Start by cutting a card base 6″x12″ from the Core’dinations Black Magic card stock. Fold it in half (I use a bone folder/burnishing bone to make a nice crease). Hint: if you aren’t a perfect folder, short the back side a tiny amount when you fold the card. Use sandpaper to sand some of the black coating off of the front of the card around the edges (I left the back side all black). Do NOT do this on your craft sheet if you are using one.

The Graphic 45 6×6 paper pad has this lovely kraft colored music sheet pictured. If you do not have it, just stamp music on a piece of kraft 6×6 card stock (to tone it down, you can stamp off on another sheet before stamping on the card stock without re-inking – this is second generation stamping). Tear a slight amount of paper around all the edges (tear towards you, with the good side facing you to get more effect). Using the ink blending tool, apply Antique Linen Distress Ink around the edges and also the back side of the paper where you plan to curl it, if desired. Using your fingers, curl the paper where  you inked on the back (it’s easier do this at the corners but you could also do it in the middle with some fiddling). Adhere this to the card base front. I made my card so it would open from the bottom; I oriented the card stock accordingly.

Adhere one side of the double-sided adhesive to cream or white card stock, keeping the backing sheet. Die cut the fancy butterfly (top layer) and rose bases from this. Die cut the delicate top layers of the roses from black card stock. Die cut two stems from green card stock. Die cut the small backing butterfly from the Core’dinations Black Magic card stock and sand it. Die cut the doily from Kraft Glassine. Crumple the Kraft Glassine doily until you get the look you desire (this puts white creases in it but also helps knock out the small pieces – although you may still have to pop out a few pieces by hand; I use a die pick for this). Place the delicate top layers of the roses face down onto the backing sheet you originally pulled off the double-sided adhesive (the side that was originally on the sticky part). Remove the top sheets from the rose base die cuts, exposing the other side of the adhesive. Carefully line up the bases with their matching tops and stick them down. Pull off the top sheet of the butterfly to expose the adhesive. Add glitter to exposed adhesive on the butterfly and roses. Polish it with your finger to get it really stuck down. Use a soft brush to knock off any excess glitter.

Using the listed Copic markers, blend from dark to light towards the tips of each of the petals on the flowers and from the center of the butterfly out towards the edges of the wings. I left the tips of the wings without color to match the seam binding ribbon. Apply Wink of Stella (optional) to the stems. Once dry, paint on a layer of Distress Crackle Paint and set it aside to dry. Once it is dry, use a die pick, edge of burnishing bone, or other tip to draw lines down the centers of each leaf from the back sides. This will both shape the leaves and make a white mark on the fronts of the leaves from the Crackle Paint. You may also do this with the stems, although I prefer to do the stems before applying the Crackle Paint so they will not get the white lines down them.

Roses, Beads, and Butterfly Card

Tear a piece of Core’dinations Black Magic card stock for under the roses, then emboss it and sand off the top layer to reveal the pattern. Adhere this, the doily, and the roses to the card as shown. Adhere the center of the fancy butterfly wings to the smaller base using glue. Gently bend the wings up on either side and adhere it to the card as shown.

To create the ribbon, I cut a little more than needed to wrap around the card. I ran some adhesive down the seam binding and stuck it to my craft sheet. Since I did not want beads inside the card, I placed the card about the middle of the ribbon and eye-balled about where to start adding beads, leaving extra wire on the ends to adhere just inside the card, under the ribbon. I started winding the green wire around the ribbon, adding beads here and there, lifting up sections of ribbon as necessary. Having parts of the ribbon stuck down made it easier to handle. I used my fingers to bend loops on either sides of the beads to keep them in place on the front of the ribbon. It may take some fiddling to get the look you desire. Once you have the beads worked out, gently lift the ribbon and stick it to the front of the card. You may want to do one side at a time (lifting the middle to slide the card under it). Be sure to wrap the ends of the wire around the edges of the card before putting the ribbon across the inside, covering up the ends of the wire to help keep them in place. You can cover the ends where the ribbon meets if you like, e.g. with a butterfly.

I love the sparkle of the glitter, Wink of Stella plus Crackle Paint, and beads! It really gives life to this card.

Accordion Circle Ladybugs Card

March 18, 2014

Hello everyone! This is Helen Cryer here, sharing with you my first ever card post as a member of the Elizabeth Craft Designs Design Team!

As soon as I saw the Lady Bug die set, I thought how well those little ladybirds (as I call them – I’m from the UK!) would go with the spotty border from the Square w/Circle Frame Edges die set, on the Accordion Circle Card. Here is the card I came up with:

I wanted to show you the different die cut elements to my card. You can see that I used the Frame Edges die set to cut solid black borders, as well as red spotty borders, which I glued over the top of the black borders. I cut the red borders from paper-backed satin, which is why they have a sheen. The other circle pieces are cut with the Accordion Circle Card die set. I cut six ladybirds, but only ended up using five of them.

For the leaves, I cut one layer from Green Velvet Adhesive Sheet (which is absolutely gorgeous, luxurious stuff!), and another leaf layer from Light Green Velvet. The Big Triple Leaf die puts an embossed line down the leaves, which I used as guideline to cut along. I stuck half of each Light Green leaf onto the darker green layer, so I could create two-toned leaves.

I adhered all the card elements, joining the two card halves together last. I felt like the card looked a bit plain though, and decided to add some flowers and leaves to the outer frames of the card. I cut another Green Velvet leaf, another Light Green Velvet leaf, and the flower layers shown below. I made two smaller flowers (each with two layers), and one larger flower (with three layers). I shaped the top layer of each flower by using a ball tool to mould it, pressing into a foam pad. I created flower centres with Transparent Silver Glitter Dot stickers. I used an assortment of plain red card stock, and Red Velvet Sheet for the flowers.

On the first page of the card, you can see the Light Green Velvet I used for one of the circle layers, and the ‘Hello’ which I die cut from Green Velvet:

Flower detail on the second page:

Well I hope you enjoyed seeing this card, and hopefully it will have sparked some ideas for something you’d like to create too!

Garden Bench Woo Hoo!

March 17, 2014

ECD-PIU-Whoo-Hoo

Hi, Raquel Mason here.

To make this card, I started off with a River Rock backing card cut at 5 x 10 & scored in the middle.  I added a piece of Brocade Blue embossed with the NEW Lots of Dots embossing folder.  Before adhering that to my backing card, I added a piece of  Gingham Ribbon.  I die cut a piece of patterned paper using the Oval Accordion Card – I nested the largest oval & the next size down to get the stitch marks and ran it through my Big Shot all in one go.  I stamped the image onto Whisper White, colored with Spectrum Noir markers, fussy cut & glued him to the card using pop dots.

ECD-PIU-Whoo-Hoo-inside

I used a Whisper White base to die cut the Garden Bench & another Garden Bench from Brocade Blue.  To die cut the Garden Bench, all you need to do is line up the tabs on the sides of the die with the fold of your card & cut.  For the Brocade Blue bench, I only wanted the arms, so I only needed to snip those parts off & glue it to the white bench.  For the patterned paper behind the bench, I die cut that at the same time as cutting the Whisper White base card so it will all line up perfectly.  I used Agatha Edges on the top & bottom of the pattern paper to get that wonderful curvy edge.  For the top flower patterned Agatha Edge, I used the excess from the bottom that I cut off and just cut again matching the shape & then glued it to the top.

ECD-PIU-Whoo-Hoo-inside-close-up1

I really love the All Seasons Tree by Karen Burniston!  I cut the trunk from Early Espresso Core’dinations & the foliage from Kiwi Kiss.  To glue the foliage on, I like to put 2-way glue on the back side of the branches & place the foliage on top & adding more glue as needed.  Just remember to add the smaller foliage first, otherwise it will be hidden when you glue the larger foliage on.  I used Fire Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz & the  flower die included in the Garden Bench to cut lots of  flowers.  To cut Shimmer Sheetz with ease, use the Metal Adapter Plate.  The cutting goes pretty quickly as you can cut 3 flowers at a time.  I hope you can see just how gorgeous these are – they are truly stunning!  The tree holds my little owl that I stamped, colored & fussy cut.  The sentiment was stamped, cut out & adhered with pop dots.  I used the grass die from Garden Bench to make 2 little patches of grass in front of the bench – I cut them a little bit smaller….just a little pruning.

Pink Lady Bug Accordion Birthday Card

March 16, 2014

   ECDLadyBug-wm

Hi everyone, Frances Byrne here.

I needed to make a birthday card for my Grand Niece who is turning one at the end of the month and the theme of her party is pink lady bugs. So when I saw the Lady Bug Peel-Off Stickers I knew I needed to use these to create her card.

As I wanted to replicate the dots of a lady bug it wasn’t hard to decide to create an Accordion card using Karen Burniston’s  Oval Accordion Card die.

Here is how I created my card:

ECDLadyBug5-wm

1. Cut a piece of white card big enough to fit one large Lady Bug and two small Lady Bugs. Apply a piece of double sided adhesive to one side of the card.  Lay the liner that you just removed from the adhesive sheet on your table and remove one large and two small lady bugs from the Lady Bug Peel-Off Sticker sheet and place on the liner sheet sticky side up. Lay the adhesive side of the white card down onto the stickers and rub the back of the card so that the stickers transfer from the liner to the white card. Apply Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter over each Lady Bug and polish the glitter into each of the Lady Bugs. Remove excess glitter and use Copic markers to color over the glitter. You can see this technique in more detail in Els’ video which you can find here.

ECDLadyBug4-wm

2. Using the Oval Accordion Card die, die cut three pages from black card. On the third page, run this back through your die cutting machine using the embossing sandwich for your die cutter so that the embossed stitching on the die is embossed onto the page. Without removing the die take a white chalk marker and color each stitch line.

ECDLadyBug2-wm

3. Adhere double sided adhesive sheet to pink card. Using the Oval Dots Frame Edges die, die cut six long and six short frames. Apply frames to both sides of one of the black pages and the other set of frames to the remaining black page.

4. Apply adhesive to the tabs and join the three pages so that the two pages with the pink frames are on either side of the stitched black page. Trim off the large tab from the third page.

5.  Use the Oval Accordion card die again to die cut the oval only from the “accordion page” die from pink card. Trim off the tabs etc and adhere over the black oval of the center page.

6. Use the largest oval accessory die from the Oval Accordion Card set to cut out three white ovals. On the third oval use the stitching die from this set to create a stitched border.

7. Use black ink to stamp “Look Who’s 1” to the white stitched oval and attach to the center page using foam tape.

8. Take some Green Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz and the Curvy Leaves die and cut out four sets of leaves. You will need to use metal adaptor plate to help cut the leaves out cleanly.

ECDLadyBug3-wm

9. Arrange the leaves onto your white ovals so you are happy with the arrangement and attach to the ovals using foam tape. Attach the large Lady Bug to one of the ovals  and one of the smaller Lady Bugs to the other oval as per photo.

ECDLadyBug4-wm

10. Adhere the last small Lady Bug to the top right hand corner of the centre accordion page using foam tape. Use two of the left over Shimmer Sheetz leaves and attach these either side of the Lady Bug.

ECDLadyBug6-wm

11. Die cut the Happy Birthday sentiment five times from black card and once from pink card. Use adhesive to layer all the black sentiments into one thick sentiment, then adhere the pink sentiment to the top of this. Adhere the “Happy” to the left hand page and the “Birthday” to the right hand page.

12. Attach the white ovals to the center panels of the left and right pages of the accordion.

13. Apply tape to the small tabs of the first two ovals. Remove the tape from the tab of the first oval and join the first oval to the centre oval. The fold of the card should be a valley fold while the two ovals will form a mountain fold. Remove the tape from the tab of the center tab and bringing the ovals behind the oval pages join the last two ovals together. The second fold on the card should be a mountain fold and the fold of the ovals a valley fold. Trim off the excess small tab from the last oval.

Daisies – Thank You card

DSC_0306-1

Hi Everyone!! My name is Jackie Smith and I was super excited to be asked to join the first ever Elizabeth Craft Designs Design Team! It’s my first post and I’m going to show you how to use Karen Burniston’s newest Pop It Ups Collection dies called ‘Accordion Oval’ to make a real simple card. In this die package comes an oval frame along with 4 nesting ovals plus a heart. I started off using Pool Party paper as my base and cut out 2 frames using the Oval frame die. I wanted to add a layer to both frames which is really easy to do. I first cut 2 frames out of the butterfly paper (Kaisercraft collection – “Enchanted Garden”). I then cut out the oval and cut the frame down 1/8″ along the short and long sides. I did this to all 4 sides of the 2 frames. You can see Karen demoing this die here

I cut out 2 more ovals using the dies that come with this oval set and stamped the sentiment by Stampendous using Archival ink by Wendy Vecchi. I added a black butterfly peel-off called ‘Daisies in Oval’ and coloured it using Copic Markers on Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter.  You can see Els demoing it  here on her YouTube video.

DSC_0311-1

For the inside of both frames, I cut out the polka Dot border using the Oval Dot Frame Edges. I used double sided adhesive that was placed onto decorative paper. I then applied Fuchsia Silk Microfine Glitter to the left side of the frame and Leaf Green to the right. For the left side I used the black peel-off Daisies in Oval and colored them using Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter. I used the following Copic Markers:

For the right side I used the die called “Daisy”. I cut the daisy silhouette out of pink Shimmer Sheetz and the overlay out of black Velvet Adhesive sheet. I used a glue pen for the centre of the flower and added some Fuchsia Silk Microfine Glitter.  I then cut the leaves using the leaf die from the same die set using Peridot Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz. I cut out the greeting using the die called ‘Thank You’ from Pink and Black Velvet Adhesive sheets. I laid the black ‘Thank You’ down first and then offset the pink ‘Thank You’ on top.

Fancy Label Accordion Card with The Bowl of Cherries Peel Offs

March 14, 2014

Hi, it’s Kelly Booth here with My First Post on the ECD Blog!  I’m Excited to be on this Very talented team and get to work with Amazing Tools.

I decided to work with the Fancy Label Accordion Die Set along with the Fancy Frame Edges and the Bowl of Cherry Peel Offs. I Love coloring the Peel Off stickers in the Usual Way (on cardstock) and also using the Silk Microfine Glitter and coloring them. For this card I colored them in the Usual way with the Exception of one of the Cherries which I have colored on the Silk Microfine Glitter.

Here is the Front of my CardLife_is_Sweeter_Closed

Custom Glitter Color Shamrock Card

March 13, 2014

Hi Everyone! I’m Debra Hensley and I am so excited to share my first project for the brand new Elizabeth Craft Designs Team. St. Patty’s day is right around the corner- the perfect time to use the adorable 4-Leaf Clover Die and wish a dear one good luck!

Shamrock joyfold closed P1060180 small

The card I created is a Joy Fold card. To make this, start with a white base cut to 4 1/4 x 8 ½. Score at 5 ½. Fold and crease well. The smaller center card is also on white cardstock cut to 3 x 8 and scored at 4. Fold and crease well.

shamrock joyfold open2

The pattern paper is from Authentique- the Precious collection-boy and the colored carstock is Bazzill. I inked all the edges of the pieces lightly with Vintage Photo brown ink before assembly.

Cut 2- 3 x 4 pieces of the pattern paper and adhere to the front and back of the short flap on the base card.

Cut 1- 4 x 5 piece and 1- 2 ¾ x 3 ¾ piece from dark green cardstock. The large piece goes in the inside of the large base and the smaller piece goes on the outside flap of the small card- add the ribbon to the smaller piece about ½ inch from the bottom before adhering it down.

Cut 1- 2 ¾ x 4 ¾ piece of light green and add to the inside of the small card.

To assemble, add a strong adhesive to the back side only of the smaller card. Close the card and place centered in the middle of the base card with the fold to the right. Adhere well. Open the flap and close the larger flap of the base card ( which should have the fold to the left), then close the small flap and your joy fold is complete! Now to decorate…

Shamrocks:
I wanted the Shamrocks to be the focal point so what better way than to make them sparkle! Die cut one large and one small shamrock from double sided adhesive sheets adhered to white cardstock. Die cut one small shamrock from pattern paper. Using the scraps of the double sided adhesive sheet, punch a small circle out for the center of the pattern shamrock. Using the remaining scraps, cut a strip approximately 3 x ½.

shamrock joyfold diecuts2

Peel off lining of large shamrock, circle and strip and glitter with Forrest Green glitter. Polish well with your fingers to set the glitter in the adhesive and bring up the shine. You’ll see the difference!

For the smaller shamrock I wanted a similar color but a little brighter. This gave me the chance to mix my own custom color! I mixed half and half Forrest Green and Spring Peridot and created the perfect blend. You can create your own custom colors for any occasion. I store my new color in an empty glitter jar I had on hand but you can purchase new ones just for your custom blends HERE. You can find a glitter recipe list and chart to keep track of your custom blends for download on the ECD website HERE.

shamrock joyfold custom glitter2

Place a medium white button in the center of the large shamrock and a smaller button on the smaller one. Place the glittered circle in the center of the pattern paper shamrock. Cut a “v” out of each end of the strip for the banner look. Place the strip on the inside of the smaller card about 1/8″ from the bottom and sticking off to the left about ½”. Adhere the pattern shamrock on the inside flap of the smaller card about 1″ from the edge. Adhere the large glittered shamrock to the front of the small card at an angle to the left. Add the smaller glittered shamrock, on a pop dot, to the left with the stem crossing the larger stem.

shamrock joyfold glitter closeup2

To finish and secure the flap, punch a 1 1/8″ circle from white cardstock. Punch a 1″ circle for the light green cardstock. Stamp the word “lucky” in black ink towards the bottom of the green circle. Mat on to the white circle. Tie a small knot in a cream color ribbon and adhere with a glue dot above the word lucky- this will be your closure. Add a small piece of foam adhesive to the bottom 1/3 only of the circle. Close the card and position and adhere the circle so that the foam adhesive is just below the bottom edge of the flap with the top part over the flap to hold it closed. When opening and closing you move the corner from behind the circle and place it back again to hold it shut.

I hope you enjoyed making this card with me. It’s a classic fold that is very versatile made even better with Elizabeth Craft Designs dies and Silk Microfine Glitters!

Karen Burniston Pop it Ups Designer Challenge – Spring & Easter!

March 12, 2014

Hi, it’s Karen Burniston with the March Pop it Ups Designer Challenge. Each month I challenge my Designer Challenge team to use Pop it Ups dies for a specific theme. This month the theme is Spring or Easter cards. You’ll find eighteen inspiring projects below from the DC team plus one guest designer.

The Karen Burniston Designer Challenge Team is a group of eleven designers who were already participating in my challenges for a previous company. When I made the leap to Elizabeth Craft Designs I was thrilled that the team came with me and we were able to pick right back up again with monthly challenges.

Recently, an Elizabeth Craft Designs Design Team was formed and five of those designers are participating in both teams. The KBDC team focuses primarily on Karen Burniston dies for the monthly challenges, mixing in whatever other products they like, including (and encouraging) other ECD products. The Elizabeth Craft Designs Design Team promotes ALL ECD products and will post many types of inspiring projects, not just Pop it Ups cards. Hopefully this will clear up any confusion about the teams.

OK back to the Spring/Easter challenge. For my project I decided to combine the Garden Bench with the Lots of Pops die to give me additional platforms for creating my Easter scene. Then I started mixing in decorator pieces from many other Pop it Ups dies, like the All Seasons Tree, Butterfly Accessory, Katie Label Pivot Card, Oval Accordion and Fancy Frame Edges.

The video tutorial will show you how to extend the length of the Fancy Frame Edges to make a frame to fit a 6×6 card:

01_Easter_Bench_Closed

The video will also show how to use the Garden Bench and the Lots of Pops dies together, plus how to get the black/white texture on the Poles. Continue Reading

Little Fishes Big Thank You

March 10, 2014

Good morning, Everyone!

This is Rita Edwards and sharing my very first Design Team card today. We’re making a sweet Thank You card !

You might already know how much I love the ocean and what better image to use than the Fishes Peel-Off Stickers! I also chose the Accordion Oval Card die set with the Oval Dots Frame Edges and the Thank You die sets.

Once all the die cuts are made, the very first step I take is connecting the base pieces and only then start adding the frames. This way we can cover the connection points between two base pieces, just like this photo below shows. Also, to create the perfect frames for the base card, I work with all four of the frame edges at once. I first place some glue on the back of each frame piece and only press the middle of each frame onto the base cut. This way I can easily adjust the connection points of each frame segment and the result is perfectly lined up frames.
