Shimmer Sheetz Sunday: Snowflake Ornaments

December 10, 2017

By Judi Kauffman

Shimmer Sheetz ornaments add a special touch to a tree, mantel, or gift box. They’re also fun to mail instead of – or inside of – a holiday card!

Each of the three snowflakes in the new die set includes partially-cut elements that can be bent upward for dimension, a beautiful detail. Instead of cutting the snowflakes out of sparkly Shimmer Sheetz, I went for the opposite, the unexpected: Matte snowflakes with a sparkly 2-layer Shimmer Sheetz background.

Match the color of the snowflake to the color of the outer circle (Shown: White Iridescent SS). Choose a contrasting color for the Stitched Circle just behind the snowflake (Shown: Ruby Gemstone and Fire Opal Gemstone SS). See the supply list for more color options or pick your own combo!

Shimmer Sheetz is a challenge to photograph, but amazing in person, and the way light reflects off the surface of the Stitched Circle makes the ornaments really special.

With Sympathy

December 2, 2017

by Judi Kauffman

Alas, I recently needed sympathy cards for the widow and son of a dear, dear man from Vermont. He loved being out in nature, so I turned to colors, textures and shapes that reflect and celebrate that part of his life: Ferns and ivy, marble and stone; a palette of blue, gray (silver), rust, green, mustard (gold) and brown – matte mixed with shiny, muted without being entirely somber.

I wanted to create cards that were appropriately respectful without being overly sad. I hope that is what I have achieved, and that the idea will be useful to you when you are called upon to send condolences.

There are two versions.

Shimmer Sheetz Sunday: Holiday Party Trays

November 19, 2017

By Judi Kauffman

I picked up some metal trays at the dollar store – the right price, but the wrong style…they had a nice plain red rim, but I wasn’t fond of the design printed on the interior (Santa against a beige burlap border). No problem! I gave them a whole new look with Shimmer Sheetz backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheets. It’s an easy, fun gift to whip up in a hurry or to make for last-minute entertaining. And with so many inexpensive trays out there, if you don’t want red-rimmed, you’re sure to find alternatives better suited to your taste and decor. Pretty elegant, don’t you think?

A Way With Words Ornaments

November 11, 2017

By Judi Kauffman

I was so excited when I saw Suzanne Cannon’s new die set with the lovely, open flourished ornament frame and three words: Peace, Joy, Love. It fits right in with one of my favorite projects – making lightweight, durable, flat Shimmer Sheetz ornaments to send instead of cards. They require only a standard envelope and postage. And Shimmer Sheetz is waterproof so the ornaments can be cleaned with a damp cloth if they get dusty.

My first thought was to make three different Christmas ornaments, but then I had another idea: Make one ornament with the two words that felt seasonal and fit nicely within the open area of the ornament (Peace and Joy) and use the third word (Love) for an ornament suitable for birthdays and anniversaries, baby showers and Valentine’s Day! I added a Stitched Circle to the first, a Stitched Heart and a butterfly to the second.

Here’s the how-to:

Shimmer Sheetz Sunday: Adding Sparkle to Mixed Media

October 15, 2017

By Judi Kauffman

I am here today to show you how to incorporate Shimmer Sheetz into mixed media artwork.

I’ve noticed that most mixed media projects include almost exclusively rusty metal, found objects, lots of layering and textures, but rarely anything that sparkles. In other words: Old valued over new, bumpy over smooth, torn over hard edge. In other words: Not particularly my style or preference. I love color, I love artwork and objects that reflect light.

Shimmer Sheetz Sunday – Holiday Head Start, Part 2 – Gift Bags

October 8, 2017

By Judi Kauffman

Solid color or patterned mini shopping bags are inexpensive and easy to find, but these two happened to have come from shopping trips and both had logos printed on the front. To upcycle them into holiday gift bags, I covered the printing with an embossed Shimmer Sheetz rectangle.

Adding a large, lush wire-edge ribbon bow at the top of the rectangle creates the look of a gift box on the front of the bag! Our brains are so used to seeing a big bow on the top of a box, it’s what we see even when that’s not precisely what is in front of us…plus the big bow draws the eye upward, kind of like wearing an interesting scarf or jacket with a fancy collar that would draw attention to our face (rather than our hips).
