Christmas Tree Frame with Fairy Lights and Shimmer Sheetz Ornaments

November 10, 2015

Hi, It’s Marsha, back again with some easy peasy Shimmer Sheetz Christmas decor!

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Christmas Tree Frame with Twinkle Lights and Shimmer Sheetz Ornaments

Do you ever go to a store determined to find something cute and then come back empty-handed because every time you saw something there, you heard this voice in your head saying: ‘I can make that!’ Or: ‘I would totally buy that, if only it would come in another colour’… ?!

Well, it happened to me this week: I went to the garden centre to look at what’s new in Christmas decor and I found this wooden Christmas tree frame with fairy lights that I liked. Except the colours were not to my taste and then I thought: I wonder if I can customize it… Or… maybe I can just make something similar using my dies and Shimmer Sheetz!

Here’s how I created it:

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Christmas Tree Frame with Twinkle Lights and Shimmer Sheetz Ornaments

1. Get a piece of 3/8 inch square dowel and cut it into three parts to create a triangle shape. Glue the dowel pieces together with wood glue or a strong craft adhesive.

I’m not a wood worker and nor is my husband, but I just told him what I had in mind and he made something up. I don’t think he even measured it! The bottom dowel ended up 6.7 inches and the upright dowels are about 9.45 inches long.

2. Paint the tree frame to match your holiday decor!

3. Add a wooden building block or something similar to give the tree a trunk.

4. Choose three or four colours of Shimmer Sheetz and use Ornament Set 4 to die-cut 5 or 6 ornament shapes.

Remember that you need a Metal Adaptor Plate to be able to die-cut through Shimmer Sheetz with intricate dies like the ornament shapes!

5. Add Transparent Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back of a scrap of Shimmer Sheetz before you die-cut the little ornament hanger. Remove the protective sheet and stick it on the ornament.

6. Wrap a small string of fairy lights around the Christmas tree frame.

I found these micro-LED lights at the garden centre. I didn’t use anything to fix them to the frame, I was able to just bend the wire around the frame and it stayed put on its own.

7. Use jump rings to hang the Shimmer Sheetz ornaments on the wire.

I like to use two pliers to bend the jump rings open (like you see in the photo above) and I close the ring (on the wire, with the Shimmer Sheetz ornament attached) by bending it in the exact opposite direction before closing it.

Have a wonderful day!

Christmas Tree with Garlands Card

November 9, 2015

Tree Card Front

Mary here with a card made with the Holiday Evergreen & Trimmings dies. This realistic looking tree can be made as full as you like by layering branches. Silk Microfine Glitter adds incredible sparkle to the garlands, which look even more beautiful in person. I used a chalkboard technique for the sentiment – check it out!

Making the Card

1. Cut a piece of kraft colored cardstock to 7 x 10 inches. Fold in half to form a 5 x 7 card base. Cut pattern paper with presents at bottom to 3 3/4 x 6 inches. Cut red cardstock 4 x 6 1/4 inches for mat. Adhere pattern paper to red mat. Cut striped pattern paper 4 1/2 x 6 1/8 inches. Cut black cardstock 4 1/4 x 5 7/8 inches for mat. Adhere striped pattern paper to black mat. Adhere both to card base as shown.

2. Die cut tree twice from green cardstock and once from brown (you may need metal adaptor plate if the cardstock is thick). Cut branches off brown tree – you will only use the trunk part. Adhere trunk to one green tree. With other green tree, cut off each branch, making a little circular-like end where the branch meets the trunk (see photo). Add cut branches to tree, gluing ends at tree trunk. Adhere tree to matted gift pattern paper where shown, leaving branches mostly free (unglued) for a 3D look.

Tree Assembly

3. Die cut two sets of presents from alcohol marker-friendly cardstock. Color with alcohol markers. Let each layer dry before applying another. Use colorless blender to highlight areas and another coat of same color to darken shaded areas. The gifts are so small you really don’t need to do any fancy coloring. Adhere to card where shown using dimensional tape on four. I used a double layer on two of the four to pop them up a bit more.

4. Stick one side of double sided adhesive to a piece cream cardstock. Die cut 8 garlands. Peel off backing, dip in Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter, and polish with finger. Color with alcohol markers. Glue to tree as shown.

5. Cut black cardstock 1 1/8 x 2 1/4 inches. Stamp Merry Christmas sentiment in white ink (don’t worry if it doesn’t stamp very bright – you actually don’t want it to). Add white colored pencil in some areas to give it a chalkboard look. Optional: use a craft knife to gently scrape some areas lighter as desired. Cut green cardstock 1 1/4 x 2 5/16 inches. Adhere black to green, lining up left edge.

Card Close Up

6. Die cut small holly leaves and small berries. Draw line down middle of 3 leaves using pointed tool. On back of each berry, rub small round stylus to form a little cup. Glue above sentiment as shown. Adhere to top left of card using dimensional tape. Add enamel dots as shown.

Memories In A Frame

November 8, 2015

Hello, this is Jackeline from the ECD Design Team. I am always excited to show you beautiful projects using dies from the Els van de Burgt Studio collection. For this week I created a photo frame.

IMG_5237

Let’s get started:

  1. Cut 3 pieces of 7” x 4 1/4” cardstock: 2 pieces in brown and 1 in pink.
  2. Die cut the shorter end of each piece using the main tag shape die from Tags & More 7 –Vine.
  3. Use one of the oval decorative dies from the Accordion Oval Card set to cut an oval opening in the pink cardstock tag. Refer to project photo for placement.
  4. Using Clear Double Sided Adhesive, adhere the two brown pieces to each other for added stability.
  5. Adhere the pink tag to the brown double-layer tag and die cut again with the same oval, taking care when lining up the die so it is precisely within the opening on the pink tag. (You will be cutting only the brown cardstock layers.)
  6. Lightly ink the edges of the tag using Frayed Burlap Distress Ink.
  7. Using your paper trimmer, cut a piece of pattern paper to 5.25″ x 4.25″. (Shown: Pink and brown polka dot pattern.) Add Clear Double Sided Adhesive tap (1/8″ width/3mm) to 1 of the longer sides and 1 of the short sides.
  8. Place this piece on the back of the frame with the open side at the top to form a pocket for the photo.
  9. Die cut a brown cardstock easel using the Card Stand/Easel die.
  10. Use Clear Double Sided Adhesive to attach one half of the easel to the back of the frame as shown in the photo, leaving the other half folded forward to hold the frame at an angle. NOTE: This is a different way to use the Card Stand/Easel. It is most often used as a true easel with the card or tag on it for temporary display. If you prefer this option, do not attach the easel to the back of the project.

IMG_5236

To Decorate the frame:

11. Add Clear Double Sided Adhesive to Soft Finish Cardstock and die cut two flower clusters with the Flower Cluster 2 die.

12. Ink the flower clusters with Frayed Burlap Distress Ink.

13. Place the flower clusters onto the frame at the bottom left and upper right as shown in the project photo. Trim at the edges as needed. Embellish flower centers with flat-backed pearls as shown, or with gems or Glitter Dots peel-offs. Add a sheer brown ribbon bow to match the brown cardstock.

The frame is ready, now it is time to pick your favorite picture.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and remember that there is more than one way to use our dies.

Happy Crafting!!!

Pop it Ups Winter Wonderland Tunnel Card

November 7, 2015

shelly hickox pop it ups tunnel cardHappy Saturday, everyone! It’s Shelly Hickox here today, and I’m going to show you how, with a few snips and a lot of glitter, you can turn Karen Burniston’s new Gift Card Accordion die into a beautiful winter diorama card.

shelly hickox pop it ups winter tunnel cardHow gorgeous are those layers of trees and snow?! The beauty of this card is that it’s three dimensional, but folds completely flat for mailing. The recipient will be amazed at how complex it looks, but it’s actually incredibly simple. Let’s get started!

IMG_49061. Begin by cutting a piece of 100 lb Soft Finish cardstock in half lengthwise, creating two 4.25″ x 11″ panels. Fold each panel in half. Place the folded panel on the Gift Card Accordion die, making sure you drop the folded edge below the cutting line on the die, so that the fold stays intact (you may want to tape it to hold it in place). Run the die and paper through your machine to cut. Repeat for other card. Cut out the center panels and cut off the tabs. Next, cut notches into the outer frame of one panel, and into the inner edges of the other, as shown.

IMG_49082. Use a sponge or inking tool to lightly color the panels on both sides.

IMG_49363. To give the card a bit more shimmer, stamp the two small snowflake dies from Karen Burniston’s Merry & Bright stamp set onto the card using embossing ink. Cover with sticky embossing powder and heat. Immediately cover with Warm Diamond glitter. Let cool and tap off excess. Assemble the card. For a more detailed tutorial, see my original post.

IMG_49324. Cover a sheet of white cardstock with double sided adhesive and die cut seven trees, being sure to cut with the release paper side up. Remove the release paper from the trees and cover with Warm Diamond glitter. Polish the glitter with your finger to completely adhere and bring out the sparkle.

IMG_49425. To create the snowbanks, cover another piece of cardstock with double sided adhesive and cut several pieces using the wavy die from the Outdoor Edges set. Cut to fit the area of the card you’re decorating. Remove the backing paper and cover with Warm Diamond glitter. Tip – for an easy way to adhere the panels, cover the outer edges with a bit of release paper before you apply glitter. Remove the release paper and stick onto your card.

IMG_49456. To make the stickers usable for the card, adhere them to cardstock and then trim carefully with detail scissors.

shelly hickox accordion tunnel cardTo complete the card, add the glittered tress and snow as desired and adhere the deer as shown. I also cut a few snowflakes from the excess adhesive-covered paper (never throw away those scraps!) using the snowflake die from the All Seasons Tree set and added them randomly to the card.

I hope you enjoyed my wintry card tutorial! I love the sparkling snow and glittery deer, and how gorgeous is that embossed frame?! I can think of so many different ways you could use this idea. I would be thrilled if you’re inspired to try one of your own. If you do, we’d love to have you share it on the new Elizabeth Craft Designs Family page on Facebook. People have been sharing some amazing cards!

Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope you have a wonderful, creative weekend!

A Way with Words Holiday Home Decorating

November 6, 2015

Quietfire_Home_Dec_1

Hi there!  It’s Suzanne Cannon here today with a little project which started out as a happy discovery – free-standing words and sentiments!  I had layered two Season’s Greetings die cuts and for some reason I wondered if I could hinge them.  It worked!  The Season’s Greetings die cuts work very nicely because the bottom is almost even.  Unfortunately this year’s version of Merry Christmas won’t work with this technique because the bottom flourish is almost pointed.  Maybe next year….!

Quietfire_Home_Dec_6

I can see these all over the dinner table, maybe used like place cards, or on the mantle along with your other favorite holiday decorations. How about popping them on the window sill or nestling them on the petals of your poinsettia?  They’re so quick and easy to make, you could add them to each of the Christmas cards you send out too.

Instructions:

  1. Die cut Season’s Greetings twice.

Quietfire_Home_Dec_1a

2. Choose the die cut which will be the back and score it straight across the top flourishes about 1/2” from the top. Don’t score into the lettered area.

Quietfire_Home_Dec_2

3.  Apply glue to the scored die cut. Use glue to have a bit of open time in order to align the diecuts perfectly.  Don’t glue below the score line. Adhere the two die cuts.

Quietfire_Home_Dec_3

4. Embellish the top die cut if desired. To create the sample below, apply Elizabeth Craft Designs Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to cardstock, die cut Season’s Greetings and Elizabeth Craft Designs’ small Snowflake, apply Silk Microfine Glitter to the diecuts, then assemble with the back diecut as shown.

Quietfire_Home_Dec_5

5. Spread the bottoms of the adhered die cuts and scatter them around the house! Quietfire_Home_Dec_8

The possibilities are endless! Where would you place these sweet additions? Maybe you could give me ideas in the comment box below?

Thanks for having a look.  Happy creating! Suzanne

Santa Hedgehog

November 5, 2015

ECDHedgieBlockswm

Hi everyone,

It’s Frances Byrne here. Just one more month and then we will be needing to post our Christmas cards out to family and friends, so I thought I would create another  Christmas card today to add to my stash. This one uses another of the Hedgehog Daisy images designed by Bianca Petroschi for Elizabeth Craft Designs. This design would be easy to convert to a shaker card if you wished by just adding a few more layers of the green grids, some acetate and whatever you wished to be your shaking element.

Here is how I created the card:

  1. Cut a piece of burgundy cardstock so it measures 4 1/4 inches x 11 inches. Score along the 11 inch side at 5 1/2 inches and fold along the score line. This will be the base of your card.
  • Use the Snowflakes Embossing Folder and place the front of the base card into the embossing folder and run through die cutting machine.
  • Add color to the embossed snowflakes by using Picket Fence Distress Paint and a blending tool. Blend gently so not to get paint onto the recessed areas of the embossing.

2. Cut a piece of designer paper 2 3/4 inches x 5 1/2 inches. Layer this onto a piece of green cardstock which is 3 inches x 5 1/2 inches.

  • Die cut the Merry Christmas Stand Up Helper Word die from green card. Adhere the sentiment to the top right hand side of the designer paper panel. The sentiment will be adhered under the green layer so that the top of the green panel is level with the bottom of the words.
  • Adhere the designer paper panel so it is centred to the burgundy base card.

ECDHedgieBlocks3wm

3. Using the grid die from the Garden Patch – 1 1/2 inch & Mini Roses die set. Die  cut one grid from green card and one from White Soft Finish Cardstock.

  • Select 3 of the white squares from the white piece and cut down the green piece so it is only one row of 3 squares. (see photos above)
  • Adhere the green grid panel to a piece of green card and trim around the edges so it is the same size as the grid.
  • Stamp the Santa Hedgehog in Chimney from the Hedgehog Daisy – Christmas Clear Stamp set onto the white squares so that the Santa is in different positions on each square.
  • Color images using Copic Markers or whatever you prefer to use.
  • Adhere the 3 decorated squares into the grid panel.
  • Add Transparent/Silver Glitter Dots Peel Off Stickers around each image on the squares to look like snow.
  • Use a glue pen to add adhesive to the white portions of the Santa’s hat and button on his suit, cover the adhesive with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter. Allow adhesive to dry.
  • Adhere grid panel to card using foam tape.

ECDHedgieBlocks2wm

4. The inside of the card:

  • Cut a piece of white Soft Finish Cardstock so it is 3 inches x 5 1/2 inches. Layer onto a piece of green card that is 3 1/4 inches x 5 1/2 inches.
  • Stamp the Santa Hedgehog in Chimney from the Hedgehog Daisy – Christmas Clear Stamp set onto the left side of the white card using black ink.
  • Stamp the three sentiments from the Merry & Bright Clear Stamp set using black ink so that it is centred between the hedgehog and the right hand edge of the card.

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you enjoyed my tutorial.

Pop it Ups

Pop it Ups Wednesday with Caz – Whiskers Winterland Fantasy

November 4, 2015

Hi friends, It’s Caz and I am here today with a fun hybrid card using the Garden Bench Pop it Ups die and the Gift Card Accordion Die.

It’s fun to play around with the dies and use them in a different way than their original design.  Today’s card is just such an experiment.

First up here is the main card opened.  You can see Whiskers the Cat is getting ready for Christmas, possibly waiting to meet a friend to exchange gifts?  Any one of the Character dies would look great on this card.  Or why not add a bunch?

Main Picture

Here is how I made it 🙂

1. To get started I took  piece of blue card and cut the Accordion Gift card twice.  To make it stiffer I also cut 2 in white and backed them so the white is on the outside and blue is on the inside. The die makes the pretty decorative score lines in the frame and also cuts notches to hold a standard size gift card.

step 2

2. For the center panel start with a piece of patterned paper cut to 14.5cm x 20cm (5.75″ x 8″) and folded in half.  Place the Garden Bench die onto the center fold and cut.

3. Also die cut a Garden Bench from brown card and use scissors to isolate just the bench so you get a piece as shown.  Use a brown ink pad to colour the bench.

Step 3

4.Using sticky notes, mask off the bench so only the detail part is showing and use a sponge and white ink to colour the detail white.

Step 4

Once the ink has dried, adhere the brown/white bench onto one that was cut into the patterned paper. Fold the bench according to the package instructions. You may also watch one of Karen’s videos here: (slide to 7:27) Garden Bench Assembly

Step

5. Use the tabs on the Accordion panels to adhere them on either side of the card with Garden Bench.  Here you can see how it looks both on the front and back.

step 5step 5b

6.  Cut two hills from the Outdoor Edges in white and stick onto the Accordion pages.

7. Cut the Flourish Gift frame twice from silver glitter paper and stick to the outside of the frame. (Note: roll the Flourish Gift Frame through your die cutting machine diagonally to get the best pressure for intricate dies)

step 6

9. Cut and Emboss 6 trees from the Evergreen Pivot Card die set.  Cut 2 extra of the larger tree to make the tree that is behind the bench.  Cut as shown.  Edge trees with green ink.

step 7

To make the large tree behind the bench I had to cut 2 trees and assemble and cut as per picture below. The notch will allow the tree to slide around the back arm of the bench and glue to the back of the card.

Step 7b

9. Cut Whiskers the Cat from cardstock and colour as desired.  I have used my pencils to create a calico cat with lots of colours. I also die cut the Santa hat from the Props 5 die set and added it to Whiskers.

step 8

11. Add a rectangle from the Flourish Gift Frame and cover the front of the Accordion and add Merry Christmas with Blue cardstock.

step 9

12. Add gift card of your choice to other page on Gift Card Accordion.

step10

Frosty Pinecones and Holly

November 2, 2015

Frosty Pinecones 10272015 1

Frosted Pinecones 10272015 2

Hi, it is Christine from Susan Tierney-Cockburn’s Design Team here. Today I would like to share a Christmas card that I created using Susan’s Garden Notes “Whitepine Boughs and Pinecones” die along with “Holiday Holly and Berries” die. I just love working with all of Susan’s dies. Here we go!

  1. Using the Accordion Circle Card, die cut 3 panels from off-white cardstock, 4 panels from B&T paper (background and texture) and 2 from Shimmer Sheetz. Also cut 1 piece of off-white cardstock 4-3/4″ square and 2 pieces of B&T 4-3/4″ square. From off-white cardstock, cut 2 scalloped circles using the largest scallop circle die in this set and 1 from Red Metallic Shimmer Sheetz. Also From the Shimmer Sheetz cut “Merry Christmas” using the Quietfire die and “Joy” using ECD’s die (use Metal Adaptor Plate for die cutting Shimmer Sheetz). Lastly cut a set of frames for the center panel from off-white cardstock using the Square w/ Circle Frame Edges – circles. Note: on the items cut from the Shimmer Sheetz and the scallop circles I backed the paper with the Double Sided Clear Adhesive before die cutting.
  2. From the 4 B&T panels and the 2 Shimmer Sheetz panels remove the circle and all the tabs. Set these aside as they will be used to decorate your card base. Ink edges of all panels, your circles (with tabs removed), scalloped circles and frame pieces with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.
  3. Cut, shape and build your pinecones and boughs using Susan’s video found here and do the same for the Holly and Berries using Susan’s video found here. To create the frost I used Dries Clear Designer Adhesive sprinkled with Diamond Dust.
  4. Next build your card base using Karen Burniston’s video found here.  Susan’s and Karen’s videos are wonderful and very easy to follow.
  5. Using your pieces decorate your card.

I hope that this inspires you to try your hand at this card – Enjoy!

Until next time – Happy Crafting!

Christine

Card Trio: Fitted Frames & Butterflies

November 1, 2015

JudiA

By Judi Kauffman

JudiD

JudiF

My Designer Challenge project for September, shown in the two photos below, gave birth to the three card projects I designed for this blog post, shown above. Each features some of the Fitted Frames 4 Curvy Squares pieces that were left after making the card with the nymph (cut all at the same time in one pass through the machine). They also include the extra butterflies I made that same day while I was at it and had set aside with the frames. No time or materials were wasted! I even put the leftovers from the transparent Glitter Dots sheet to use.

JudiJ

JudiK

Rather than providing step-by-step instructions, I’m going to include my design strategies – the unifying elements that made it fun to work on several cards at the same time – and encourage you to use the photos as a source of inspiration. That way, you can switch to a different color combination and otherwise customize the cards to suit your taste and the occasion.

Instead of Friends or Missing You substitute a different sentiment, for example: Happy Birthday, Thinking of You, or Thanks. Instead of pink, orange, brown, and blue as the palette, go for another colorful quartet. Make large cards or small ones, top-fold, side-fold or flat. You get the idea!

The unifying elements that repeat among the trio of projects are:

Dots – Notice the piece of Light Pink Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz embossed with the Lots of Dots embossing folder, those wonderful little extra dot pieces from the frames, and the leftovers from a sheet of Glitter Dots peel-offs that I used for some of the butterflies.

JudiB

JudiE

Squares – In addition to the die cut frames and the die cut square with the heart-shaped cutout, add patterned paper and solid color cardstock squares cut on a paper trimmer.

JudiG

Butterflies – Die cut from Shimmer Sheetz, most have a decorative overlay cut from a second color. A trick for the 2-layer butterflies: Cut off the head and antennae from the bottom layer (only the body section of the two pieces are aligned and attached). And make sure that the wings are bent upward for dimension. Reminder – Use the Metal Adaptor Plate to die cut Shimmer Sheetz; review Els van de Burgt’s YouTube video tutorial if you are new to this technique. TIP: When removing the Shimmer Sheetz butterflies from the die, poke out the two wings first, then the body, and finally pull upward toward the head and antennae last so they won’t tear. (That’s the most fragile part. This strategy works well for cardstock or paper, too!)

JudiH

JudiI

Words – Use cardstock that matches the frames for words cut with Suzanne Cannon’s ‘A Way with Words’ dies or mix in a smaller vinyl peel-off greeting.

Layouts – Trust your eye. Arrange and rearrange the elements till you’re pleased with the results and then use the appropriate adhesives to hold things in place.

Dimension – Use Power Adhesive Tabs to add dimension to some of the frames, to hold the layers together in each of the 2-layer butterflies, and to attach the butterflies to the cards. Use Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to hold all flat layers.
