Die Cut Design Team Designer Challenge – April

April 4, 2017

Hi everyone,

It’s the first Tuesday in April, time for the Die Cut Design Team Designer Challenge.

Our challenge this month is “Glittery Backgrounds” – add Silk Microfine Glitter in some way when creating the background for your card.

Our Design Team have some wonderful ideas on how to create Glittery Backgrounds for you today. Make sure you check their individual blog posts for information on the technique they used. Elizabeth Craft Designs also has many videos on their YouTube channel using Silk Microfine Glitter, including more backgrounds and plenty of other ideas.

For our challenge today we are giving away three 1/2 oz containers of Silk Microfine Glitter in the colors of your choice to three lucky winners.

To enter, simply leave a comment on this blog post below and answer this question: What is your favorite technique to use with Silk Microfine Glitter?

Winners will be selected in a random drawing.

The winners’ names will be announced on Friday, April 7 here on the Elizabeth Craft Designs blog.

Now let’s take a look at the wonderful creations our talented Design Team have created for the Challenge this month. For more information about the cards, click on the designer’s name under each card to be taken to the designer’s blog post and will open up in a new window.

To start us off this month, Birgit Norton created her glittery background using Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape in 3mm; 6mm and 10mm covering the adhesive tape with Vintage Pink; Spring Peridot; Sea Glass and Teal Silk Microfine Glitters. For the rest of her card she used the Dotted Scallop Rectangles; Scallop Hearts from Els van de Burgt Studio, the Small Cupcake from Joset Designs and the Garden Notes Ivy Vine. Birgit used White and Celadon Soft Finish Cardstock on her card.

Frances Byrne used the ModaScrap Rose Pocket die to create her glittered background with Pink Peony and Silverado Silk Microfine Glitter. Frances also used the ModaScrap Dancing Butterflies and Stitched Fishtail Banners and the word “Sending” from the A Way with Words – Sending Hugs Kisses die set to decorate her card. Frances used White, Rosebud, Silver Gray and Rich Black Soft Finish Cardstock as well.

Sanna Lippert created a beautiful glittered butterfly background using the ModaScrap Dancing Butterflies and the Small Butterfly & Smile Sentiment from Els van de Burgt Studio. Sanna used Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter to create her background panel and Fire Opal Silk Microfine Glitter for the butterfly next to the sentiment. Half-pearls add a bit of dimension to the butterfly’s body.

Selma Stevenson created a gorgeous glittery gift card holder using the ModaScrap Leaf Pocket and Lacy Poppies die sets. To create her gift card holder Selma also used Els van de Burgt Studio Tags & More 9 – Sparkle; Dotted Scallop Rectangles and Happy Birthday dies. For the sentiment on the front she chose A Way with Words – Celebrate. Selma used White, Rich Black and Olive Twist Soft Finish Cardstock on her card and added Soft Green Microfine Glitter, visible through the open areas within the leaves.

Melanie Smith created her glittered background using Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape in 3mm; 6mm and 10mm, covering the tape with Antique Silver, Antique Gold and Ruby Silk Microfine Glitter. To create her card Melanie chose Stitched Rectangles and Dotted Scallop Rectangles from Els van de Burgt Studio and a sentiment stamp from Susan’s Garden. To decorate her card Melanie die cut patterned paper with ModaScrap Dancing Butterflies dies.

Sandy Diller created a gorgeous gatefold card that can be used with an invitation tucked inside. She used the ModaScrap Gatefold – Elegant Rose die as well as the Postage Stamp Squares from Els van de Burgt Studio. For the glittered background Sandy chose Copper Rose Silk Microfine Glitter.

Anita Kejriwal celebrates in style using the ModaScrap Rose Pocket with Vintage Pink Silk Microfine Glitter for her background. Anita used Dotted Scallop Rectangles from Els van de Burgt Studio and incorporated Silk Microfine Glitter in the foreground, too, with A Way with Words – Celebrate in Basic Black Silk Microfine Glitter. She chose Soft Finish Cardstock as well.

Katelyn Grosart gets straight to the point with this masculine birthday card. For her glittery background, she used the Diamond Background from Joset Designs, adding sparkle with Chocolate and White Silk Microfine Glitter. To decorate her card Katelyn chose the Arrows and Feathers die sets from Joset Designs, the Pair of Leaves 1 and Pair of Leaves 2 from ModaScrap, and the Stitched Circles from Els van de Burgt Studio. For the sentiment she picked the General Sentiments Clear Stamps.

  • Vicki Miller April 4, 2017 at 5:45 pm

My favorite thing to do with glitter is to adhere double sided adhesive to a card. Pull off the paper cover to expose the adhesive and stick a piece of lace on it. Add a light colored glitter and burnish the glitter. Pull the lace off and add a dark glitter and burnish the glitter. Makes a great background or border and everyone thinks the card is awesome.

  • Kathy April 4, 2017 at 1:02 pm

  • Maggie Neil April 4, 2017 at 12:59 pm

Each & every card is absolutely beautiful & unique! I haven’t used glitter much when making cards because it seems intimidating. I would love to try it. I would probably use the double sided tape method or adhesive backing? I’m going to watch your videos and attempt some of these projects. Thanks for the beautiful inspirations and products

  • Kathy April 4, 2017 at 12:59 pm

  • Joanna Mackintosh April 4, 2017 at 10:08 am

I have never used your Silk Microfine Glitter – I do tend to avoid it wherever possible 😉 Have to say though, after watching lots of Els and purchasing a roll of the double-sided adhesive, I am experimenting a bit more. I wish I could get hold of Swiffer cloths more easily here in the UK though, she uses them so well but I would have to go through Amazon and pay a small fortune for them sadly 🙁

    • Ingrid Broekman April 4, 2017 at 10:39 am

Joanna, do you have an Aldi or Lidl nearby? If not, perhaps an ASDA? You should be able to get similar no-name brands there for considerably less 🙂

  • carol a smith April 4, 2017 at 10:08 am

My favorite technique is to use the double-sided tape on the cardstock and lay a beautiful piece of lace over it and burnish in the Elizabeth Crafts microfine glitter. Remove the lace and add another color of the microfine glitter to the exposed tape.

  • Patsy April 4, 2017 at 10:04 am

Really like the “fineness” of this glitter. Use it with spray adhesive to put a very light sparkle on flowers to attache to cards.

  • Lisa Weyers April 4, 2017 at 10:01 am

I am addicted to your double sided adhesive. I will be trying some lace techniques as described here! thank you Els and team

To tell you the truth, I have not used your Silk Microfine Glitter. To tell the truth, I have not used much glitter at all. I am fairly new to crafting and have just started to try out glitters. I just recently heard about your Silk Microfine Glitter from Stacy at Scrapbooking Made Simple. I put it on my list of craft things to buy. And then I got your email today, so I thought I would try and win these. I so do want to try them. I was so curious about them, I went into YouTube and just watched several of your videos on this Silk Microfine Glitter. It looks AMAZING!!! Thank you for the chance to win some of these. I am very eager now to try them. As I was watching the videos, I thought, why would anyone want to use any other glitter than this. I hope , eventually, to get every color you have. I know I want these to become my “go to” glitter. Thank you again for the chance to win and try them.

These cards are fabulous! I haven’t used this glitter yet, but I watched the video where it was burnished through lace & I’m anxious to give that a try.

  • DOREEN BLOSSER April 4, 2017 at 9:58 am

love to do the lace technique…have done it and its always a shop stopper!!

  • Jean Chaney April 4, 2017 at 9:57 am

I like to use the Microfine Glitter as a background for images. For example, a combo of blues and then add orange fish on top in a shaker card. Love the inspiration cards!

  • Joanne Kruger April 4, 2017 at 9:55 am

I don’t know if I could choose only 3 of your beautiful glitters if I won, but I would like to try.

  • DOREEN BLOSSER April 4, 2017 at 9:54 am

I haven’t tried it yet but I want to do the technique with the lace. I think the finished product is so delicate and beautiful.

  • Nancy Yoder April 4, 2017 at 9:41 am

Ahhh glitter everywhere! Until I watched Els video on glitter! Now a coffee filter contains the glitter everywhere! Thank you Els! And I love Delmas card using tone on tone glitter to paper! Stunning! Thank you Selma!

    • Nancy Yoder April 4, 2017 at 10:00 am

Ohhh…soft green glitters is my choice of glitters! Just as Selma used!

  • Kathy Mueller April 4, 2017 at 9:40 am

I haven’t used this type of glitter before, but I would love to try it out with a lot of different methods.

  • Carol D. April 4, 2017 at 9:38 am

My favorite way to use the glitter is with a beautiful piece of lace on the adhesive sheets. Apply and polish in the open areas, burnish with finger, brush off extra, then pull off the lace and fill in with a clear or contrast color glitter. Very fancy!

  • Sandi McFarland April 4, 2017 at 9:37 am

I like to die cut shapes and place them on double sided tape and then add the glitter. Beautiful results every time.

  • Myrna April 4, 2017 at 9:30 am

The array of colors of your Silk Microfine glitter is fabulous. They do make striking backgrounds.

  • Cynthia Link April 4, 2017 at 9:30 am

I like to use the glitter on pieces that I die cut from double sided adhesive sheets. It gives a die a whole new look! Love lots of glitter! Thanks!

  • Connie Sue Larson April 4, 2017 at 9:29 am

The double sided tape works well and easily for me when using glitter! I LOVE adding glitter to my cards

Making rainbows – wow, are they pretty in glitter!
    Beautiful inspiration today, thank you.

  • Mary Ellen Reeder April 4, 2017 at 9:27 am

I love the color choices with this fine glitter. Will give sparkle and interest to the areas I love to hightlight on my cards like butterfly wings:)

  • Elizabeth April 4, 2017 at 9:25 am

I like to sprinkle it on modeling paste that was applied using a stencil! That gives it dimension and sparkle!

  • Bill Burton April 4, 2017 at 9:25 am

I like double-sided tapes. I use Scor-Tape and Silhouette Double-sided sheets. Your glitters are fantastic!

  • Pat April 4, 2017 at 9:21 am

I’m new to glitter. The backgrounds look easiest and most forgiving. One of those will be first. I now have five colors of glitter–all EC.

  • Pat April 4, 2017 at 9:19 am

I have just built up my inventory of EC glitter to 5 colors. I am ready to try my first glitter project. These backgrounds look great and I think I’ll try one of those first, then a sticker. All of these projects look doable for a beginner, now to find the time.

  • Marilyn April 4, 2017 at 9:19 am

I always loved glitter; but couldn’t get it to “act right” until I discovered yours and the double sided tape . Now everything has at least some glitter on it! Thank you!

  • Carol b April 4, 2017 at 9:14 am

I love to highlight certain areas on cards! Can’t beat the sparkle of the microfine glitter.

  • Theresa A Wright April 4, 2017 at 9:13 am

So many choices! I’ll have to look again to see if my favorite was used – certainly there was at least one variation – but my favorite is to use a scrap of lace on cardstock that has been backed with double sided adhesive, apply glitter and rub in well, then remove the lace and apply a contrasting color of glitter to the negative space that had been left by the pattern in the lace. Lovely!

  • Edith Double April 4, 2017 at 9:13 am

I haven’t used thIs product and would love to learn .I love adding glitter to my cards. Thank you for all the tips you give on your blog.

  • Vivian C. April 4, 2017 at 9:00 am

All the design team projects are so beautiful. I’m a glitter novice. I have been watching Els’ videos and learning lots. My favorite glitter technique is to fill the negative space of a die cut with glitter. It really makes the die cut pop.

  • Jan D., FL April 4, 2017 at 8:38 am

I love coloring the glitter with my Copic markers. I took a class to learn how to use the peel offs with the glitters and then coloring and blending with my Copics. I’ll be honest, I hated glitter until I discovered yours. Now I wouldn’t be without it in my arsenal of supplies.

  • Leanne Brock April 4, 2017 at 8:30 am

I absolutely love the Silk Microfine Glitter that Els puts out. I use it on a lot of different projects to give sparkle and texture. The people who receive my cards or creations always say the same thing, “I can’t believe this is glitter, it’s so soft.” Thank you to all of the designers for wonderful pictures and ideas.

  • Janet Lange April 4, 2017 at 8:19 am

Elizabeth Crafts glitter is the best on the market. I like to use it any time I want to add a little sparkle to a card.

  • Mary Holshouser April 4, 2017 at 8:17 am

I use the peel-off stickers for my
cards. There are so many designs
and I can always find one that fits with
the design. I enjoy coloring the glitter.
thanks for sharing so many great cards.
