Goodbye Summer, Welcome Autumn

August 14, 2015

Hello friends, it’s Petroschi Bianca here.

I already hear cackling crows in the mornings, which tells me that fall is around the corner, a spectacular season that I love so much thanks to Susan Tierney Cockburn and all the designers at Elizabeth Craft Designs. They have made so many beautiful new dies to put our fantasies in practice. With my project today, I would like to welcome you to Autumn. I hope you enjoy!
Petroschi Bianca (1)

Here is how I created this mini decorative panel:

1. Panel base is made of cardboard measuring 25 cm/20 cm.

2. I painted the background with a black Chalkboard Paint and after drying, I hand drew ”Welcome Autumn” with a pencil.

3. I then traced the “Welcome Autumn” with white acrylic.

Petroschi Bianca (2)
4. I cut the cute scarecrow from different colors of 300 gr/sqm cardstock using Susan’s Garden- CountryScapes Build a Scarecrow die set and assembled it.

Petroschi Bianca (3)

5. I cut, colored, shaped and assembled a multitude of chrysanthemums using cardstock in autumn colors with the new die set Garden Notes Chrysanthemum. It was so much fun!

6. I filled the empty spaces with die cuts from the Leafy Branch die.

7. I used ribbon to make a hanger and added two pumpkins from the same CountryScapes Build a Scarecrow die set. I also added 2 little ladybugs from the Garden Notes – Bugs & Butterflies.

Christmas In August With ECD

August 13, 2015
Hi, it’s Angela and today I want to share a home décor project idea that works perfectly with the brand new Elizabeth Craft Designs Card Stand/Easel die. This die is perfect to display cards, tags, programs or paper frames with photos! Here is how I created mine.

Creating the paper frame:

*Die cut two tags with the brand new Tags & More 9 – Sparkle die from festive patterned paper.
*Place the two tags on a 10 x 10 white cardstock background that has been scored down the center.
Creating the ornaments:
*Attach cardstock to an ECD double-sided adhesive sheet. Peel off the release sheet and place your peel-off sticker upside down on the release sheet.
*Place cardstock with adhesive facing down on the release sheet with the peel-off.
*Remove release sheet and cover adhesive with Bluebell Silk Microfine Glitter.
*Polish glitter with your finger and brush of excess.
*Return the leftover glitter into the jar. Fussy cut each ornament.
*Add the ornaments as desired.
Glitter “Believe”:
*Apply ECD double-sided adhesive sheet to a scrap of cardstock.
*Remove the release sheet and glitter the adhesive sheet with Antique Silver Silk Microfine Glitter.
*Polish glitter with your finger and brush of excess.
* Place the “Believe” die on the glittered piece and die cut.
 Creating the glittered corners:
*Apply ECD double-sided adhesive sheet to a scrap of cardstock
*Remove the release sheet and glitter the adhesive sheet with Antique Silver Silk Microfine Glitter.
*Polish glitter with your finger and brush of excess.
*Place the corners on the glittered sheet and die cut.
Creating the Easel Stand:
*Die cut a wood grain paper with the easel die.
*Fold on the score line in the center and stand up the easel.
Finishing the project:
*Glue the “Believe” onto tags.
*Glue the photo and corners onto the tags.
*Set in the easel for display.

This was a fun and easy project to complete. Try adding a little glitter to your holiday projects for that festive touch! The Silk Microfine Glitter comes in tons of beautiful colors and you can also mix them to create your own custom ones. The new dies were such fun to create with! Get your dies, glitter, & adhesive sheets out and PLAY!

Garden Box Card Keeper

July 9, 2015
PHi, it’s Angela and today I want to share with you a wooden box that I altered using a garden theme. My box measures about 9” wide, 6” tall & 7” deep. The box will be the perfect place to store my summer themed flower & garden cards. Let me show you how I created this project.

A (5)

Preparing the box:
*Paint the box with gesso. After it has dried, paint with green paint. After the paint has dried, lightly sand all sides.
*Make a template for the inside of the box. Cut out and trace onto patterned paper. Cut out the four sides & glue to the inside of the box.
*Sand edges of paper and ink with coffee ink using a sponge.

B (3)

Decorate the box front:
*Cut a piece of patterned paper 8 1/2 x 2 1/2 & fold in half. Die cut using the Tags & More Lace die. Place a copper brad in each hole and hammer the brad flat.
*Add this to the front of the box with glue.
*From polka dot patterned paper, die cut a tag using Tags & More Daisy die.
*From a preprinted image in the paper collection, die cut a tag using Tags & More Leaves die. Shorten tags as desired.

C (3)

*Mat the two tags together and glue to the box front.

D (3)

Create a pocket for the box:
*Cut a piece of 11 x 4 1/2 cardstock. Die cut using the Tags & More Vine die (center die on cardstock).

E (3)

*Cut to 6 3/4” long. Score on all three sides of the tag at 1/4” & apply ECD tape to the edges & crop the edges as shown in the photo.
*Apply patterned paper cut at 4 x 3 3/4” to pocket front & glue down the decorative edge. Place  copper brad in the hole & hammer the brad flat.

F (2)

*Die cut Alpha letters from green cardstock spelling “GARDEN NOTES” & apply to the pocket.
*Ink edges with coffee ink & glue to the inside of the box.
*Extra tags can be stored in the pocket.

Tags for the Cards:
*Cut cardstock to 5 1/2 x 4 and die cut using the Tags & More Sunburst and Flourish dies. Place one die at the top & one at the bottom of the cardstock.

G (2)

Choose patterned paper and create the cards. Add the tags, ribbon & die cuts from the paper collection.

J

*Create a divider for the inside if desired.

P

That’s it! I hope you give this tutorial a try, it’s an easy project to complete from an old box!

Daisies & Roses: Towels & Cards

March 15, 2015

By Judi Kauffman

???????????????????????????????

I’m glad to be back as today’s Guest Designer. My projects: A pair of kitchen towels for our neighbor to thank her for hosting our morning coffee hour and a quartet of simple cards that incorporate the same peel-offs that I chose to use as stencils for the painted and stitched towels.

???????????????????????????????  ???????????????????????????????

???????????????????????????????  ???????????????????????????????

Here’s the how-to:

  1. Wash the towels to remove sizing (no fabric softener). Iron the towels (even if they are never ironed ever again…).
  1. Open the towel so it is flat on the table. Measure and center an outline peel-off on the towel about 6” from the bottom hem. Use painter’s tape to mask off a rectangle around the peel-off. Add a trio of outline peel-off bees or butterflies within the rectangle. Make sure all peel-offs are pressed firmly in place. I chose ovals with flowers, but you could pick circles with owls or dragonfly ladies or flower or any other shaped (enclosed) motif(s) you prefer.
  1. Cover work table with plastic bag and newspapers. Spread out the towel so it is flat and smooth. (Option: Tape the towel in place so it won’t move.) Following paint manufacturer’s instructions for using fabric medium, mix Black Plum acrylic paint and fabric medium together on a palette or disposable plate. Using a stencil brush to apply paint/medium mixture, fill the rectangle around the peel-offs, taking care not to let paint seep underneath the lines. Tip: Stencil brushes have stiff bristles and are used with a pouncing motion, paint is applied a little at a time – not in thick swashes like a regular paintbrush.
  1. When the paint is dry, lift up and discard the painter’s tape. Very carefully lift up the outline peel-offs and move them onto A-2 Kraft Brown cards. There will still be adhesive on the back; the outlines will now be matte Black Plum instead of shiny Black.
  1. To get the most from the peel-offs use a Sticker Transfer Sheet to move the negative pieces (leftovers) from the sheet onto two more A2 Kraft Brown cards.
  1. Use 1 strand of white Perle Cotton #5 to add touches of embroidery to the towels. I chose a mix of French knots, running and straight stitches.

???????????????????????????????    ???????????????????????????????

  1. Use black and white pens to add doodles and details to the cards.

Decorating for Winter

January 2, 2015

ECD_winter_Candy_Spiegel7

Hi, it’s Candy here! I am so happy to spend another year designing with Elizabeth Craft Designs!

When I pack away my holiday decor, my house feels a bit empty. This year I decided to decorate for winter, starting with this adorable banner. It only requires a few products to make and is a fun way to celebrate the season. Plus get extra use out of card-making supplies.

Here’s how I created the banner:

1. Cut six pieces of patterned paper 3 1/2 x 6″.

ECD_winter_Candy_Spiegel

2. Line up the Tags & More 2 – Deco die at the top of the paper and run it through your die cutting machine. Tip: use a piece of washi tape (or painter’s tape) to hold the die in place.

ECD_winter_Candy_Spiegel2

3. Snip the edges off of each of the sheets of paper. Then use a paper trimmer to trim the sides.

ECD_winter_Candy_Spiegel3

4. Line up the Tags & More 2 decorative tag, secure with washi tape and run through your die cutting machine. Do this to 3 of the tags.

5. Match the decorative tags to the plain tags and adhere them together.

ECD_winter_Candy_Spiegel4

6. Score and fold each of the three tags 3/4″ from the bottom. Add a strip of Elizabeth Craft Designs Transparent Double Sided Tape to the bottom edge. Peel off release strip and fold. This creates a casing for the string.

ECD_winter_Candy_Spiegel5

7. Cut decorative corners and reinforcements and adhere to tags.

ECD_winter_Candy_Spiegel68. Adhere a piece of Elizabeth Craft Designs Transparent Double Sided Tape to a piece of white cardstock slightly larger than the snowman. Remove the release sheet and place it upside down in front of you. Place peel-off sticky side up on your release sheet, then place white cardstock with adhesive side facing down on top. Turn over, remove release sheet and cover adhesive with Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter. Polish and brush of excess glitter. Color with alcohol markers. Fussy cut image and adhere to one of the tags.

ECD_winter_Candy_Spiegel79. Add sticker words to the other two tags.

10. Run twine or ribbon through casing on the back of the tags so they hang side by side. Tie a loop at each end. Hang and enjoy!

The Twelve Days of Christmas Mantelscape

November 22, 2014

Nancy Walker is back as today’s Guest Designer, showing us how to create this stunning Twelve Days of Christmas Mantelscape.

Mantelpiece

The Twelve Days of Christmas Mantelscape

By Nancy Walker

Since Karen Burniston joined forces with Elizabeth Craft Design, I have been excited to see what she designs next. I have followed her designs for years, and these new wafer-thin dies are a dream! I have been delighted that all shapes needed to make a complete card with various levels of mats and focal points are included in the die sets. This makes storage a dream. The Accordion Fancy Label die has become my favorite. There is no end to what can be done with this set. And now—a scene for your mantel!

THE MANTELSCAPE CARD

1. Choose a set of coordinating stamps. This project uses a stamp set based on the Twelve Days of Christmas from the familiar old song.

2. Cut number of panels needed for the stamp set from patterned paper. This project uses a 6” square pad of various coordinating Christmas cardstocks. It is acceptable to use all the same paper patterns or one or two coordinating ones.

3. Using one of the dies from the set that will be the correct size for the images chosen, cut these into squares from heavy white cardstock. Bristol board or hot press watercolor paper takes water media and markers very well without much bleeding.

4. Stamp images on white cardstock, cut close to the size of the die chosen. Note: the title for this piece was too large to use a smaller die, so an extra panel was cut from the hot press watercolor paper and trimmed off so it fits flush with the pivoting fancy label inside the panel.

3a

5. Stamp images in black or heat emboss with black fine detail powder. If using water media to color the stamped images, heat embossing will allow more control with the watercolor. Alcohol markers were used to color these images, so a black ink that is suggested for use with alcohol markers was used.

6. Color all images and cut with chosen die.

2[1]

7.  If using one of the smaller dies, and there is another larger one that can be used for a mat, cut mats from solid cardstock that coordinates with the panels.

3

8.  Using Distress Inks and an Ink Application tool, add some warm color to the edges of the colored panels. Then switch to a clean applicator tool and edge each colored panel and each colored mat in gold ink. Then use a metallic gold paint pen to draw a controlled edge around each mat. Hint: cut a small slit in the applicator tip, prime the pump, and run the pen around the edge with the paper inserted into the slit. It will not be perfect, but it is an easy way to accomplish this task.

FINISHED STAMPED AND MATTED IMAGES:

4[1]

FINISHED PANELS, READY TO ASSEMBLE:

5[1]

ASSEMBLE THE MANTELSCAPE

1.  Adhere each finished matted image to panels onto pivot area in the middle.

2.  OPTIONAL: If the chosen cardstock is “wimpy” as much printed cardstock is, add a reinforcement panel on the back. Since this is a large piece, it will need reinforcement. Smaller projects will be fine without them.

3.  To make a reinforced panel, cut a panel out of either coordinating cardstock or plain white. This project uses white and then each panel is stamped with a background Christmas words stamped in green and then sprayed with gold glitzy spray to match the gold on the front. This way the center won’t be too heavy and can be trimmed down as shown here:

6

ASSEMBLY

1.  If a smaller accordion fold card has never been made, it would be good to practice on some plain panels to get the idea. Following instructions with the die (or online at one of the excellent YouTube videos by Karen Burniston and Els van de Burgt showing you how to assemble an accordion card), practice along with the person teaching on the video.

2.  Remember to lay out the panels with the “wing” on the right. Adhere some double sided adhesive on the front of each flap or wing and on the front of the two little tabs that will connect the center panels. Now “exercise” that flap and the tabs a little by turning them up at the fold line and then flattening them back out.

3.  Put adhesive on all flaps. Begin with the first panel and add the second panel to the flap, adhering the flap to the back of the next panel on its left side. Do not put the second panel flush with the fold line. It needs a little “wiggle” room so it can open and close. Repeat this method, assembling the first four panels. Then repeat this for each of the next three panels.

FIRST TWO PANELS WITH FLAP (OR WING) JOINED TO NEXT PANEL:

7

4. Decide if the mantelscape needs to begin with a mountain fold or a valley fold and then fold each group accordingly. This project begins with a valley fold on the outer frame panels so that the title page shows up better when on the mantel. The inner panels will be a mountain fold over the valley fold. Once that decision is made, take each center on the little pivot points and “exercise” them once.

5. The pivoting centers of each panel fold the opposite way, so take the first two panels and adhere the tabs to the back of the next pivoting panel. That will put the centers in the “mountain” fold pattern. Tape the next center panel going the opposite way as shown in the photo or the directions from online. See next photo.

8

6.  Do this with all the rest of the panels already put together. It is better to make 4 smaller versions of this project than to add one at a time. { To quote a favorite teacher, “Ask me how I know.”}

7. Now merely join the first section with the second section via the flaps and join the tabs the same way on each previous section. Repeat with the next two sections, and finally join the two large sections in the middle.

8. Be very careful when handling this many sections at the same time. It is better to keep the section being worked on folded as best as possible while joining the next panel. Be aware that the pivot area is the most fragile part of this panel, so do not put too much stress on any of the pivot points.

9. Once totally assembled, it can be pressed gently in a single stack to “set” the folds. Remember to alternate mountain and valley folds. When the outer panel is a valley as seen above in the sample, the center panels come forward and are joined together. The next folded area will be coming forward in a mountain fold, while the center panel will go towards the back in a valley fold. This is an excellent pattern for a decorative piece.

10. A project like this can also be used on the center of a table by finishing both sides with images. Reinforcement will not be necessary if two panels are combined for this method.

Pin and bookmark these ideas for this holiday season and to use throughout the year! Each day of the hop features approximately 30 gift projects and you can “hop” from one blog to another to check them all out.

We are exited to join this year’s Blog Hop! For the first day of the hop we invited our frequent guest Designer Judi Kauffman who created a beautiful decorated tissue box. See Judi’s instructions below.

Two-Way Tissue Box

By Judi Kauffman for Elizabeth Craft Designs

Box-1B

???????????????????????????????

My friend Els is decisive when it comes to comfortable shoes and schnitzel (no gravy!), but when it comes to décor in her studio it’s another matter. She likes to redecorate and reorganize the space on a regular basis. Hence, her present this Christmas is a Two-Way Tissue Box. She can position it with the two adjacent mixed media sides facing her guests and students, or with the two adjacent embossed sides taking center stage.

When making your own tissue box projects all four sides can match, all four can be different, or use my strategy with two pairs.

You’ll need just under two and a half 5” x 12” sheets of Shimmer Sheetz from a 3-sheet pack. Keep the leftovers for cards, jewelry, or other projects.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Base coat edges and interior of Walnut Hollow Boutique Tissue Box with royal purple acrylic paint. (No need to paint the rest, it will be covered.)

???????????????????????????????

2. Using an ink applicator tool to create a mottled effect, alter three 5” x 12” pieces of Purple Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz with pool (turquoise), espresso, purple and gold metallic alcohol inks. Allow some of the original color of the Shimmer Sheetz to remain visible between the randomly applied inks.

???????????????????????????????

3. Mixed media side pieces: Cut one 5” x 12” piece of alcohol ink-altered Shimmer Sheetz in half (two 5” x 6” pieces). Cut sparkly mesh 5” x 6” to cover both pieces. Set sewing machine to 7 stitches per inch. Using tan thread, randomly stitch through both layers – mesh and Shimmer Sheetz. Switch to purple thread and continue stitching in different directions. (No need to switch the bobbin when changing to purple.)

???????????????????????????????

4. Two-pattern embossed side pieces: Cut one 5” x 12” piece of alcohol ink-altered Shimmer Sheetz in half (two 5” x 6” pieces). Orient the pieces so they are vertical rectangles. Emboss the bottom 4” of each piece with Bouquet folder. Leave an eighth-inch space and emboss the remaining portion of the rectangle with Spring Leaves folder. Lightly sand to bring out the embossed details. Wipe sanded surfaces with damp paper towel. To create further contrast on these two side pieces, cover embossed flowers with paper to protect it; lightly apply purple alcohol ink to raised portion of Spring Leaves.

5. Top piece: Cut a 5” square from remaining 5” x 12” piece of alcohol ink-altered Shimmer Sheetz. Back with double sided adhesive sheet. (Do not expose the adhesive till step 6.) Place tissue box upside down on the back of the Shimmer Sheetz square and trace the opening. Cut out the opening. (Tip: Use short, sharp scissors to ensure smooth curves along the cutting line.)

6. Finishing: Back the four side pieces with double sided adhesive sheet. Working one piece at a time expose the adhesive and put the top and side pieces onto the tissue box (mixed media pieces on two adjacent sides, embossed pieces on the two remaining sides).

Deer family in rolling hills

October 28, 2014

EDC_RE_10_19_14

Hello crafty friends,

This is Rita Edwards here and I would like to share my new framed project with you: Deer family in rolling hills.

While organizing my craft room I came across a frame I had long forgotten and knew instantly that today’s project would be placed in this frame.

As always, I hope you have a nice cup of coffee or tea in your hand so you can sit back and enjoy my tutorial.

This is how you can create your very own framed artwork:

1. Cut blue cardstock at 6″ wide x 6″ high, set aside.

2. Cut green cardstock at 6″ wide x 4″ high. Using the pine trees die from the Outdoor Edges die set, die cut edge. Using some scrap pieces, die cut additional pine trees, trim at the ‘trunks’, set aside

3. Using the same green cardstock, die cut the leaves with the Curvy Leaves die set. Trim each leaf off and set the individual leaves aside.

4. Cut brown cardstock at 6″ wide x 2.5″ high. Using the rolling hills die from the Outdoor Edges die set, die cut edge.

5. Using the same brown cardstock, die cut a tree with the All Seasons Tree die set.

6. Using the All Seasons Tree die set, cut clouds from blue and white cardstock.

7. Have Double Sided Adhesive, Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter, Deer Peel-off stickers in black, white cardstock and a clean non-stick craft mat ready for this step: Peel off the release sheet from the Double Sided Adhesive Sheet and adhere the adhesive side to white cardstock. Peel off the other release sheet and place it upside down on your craft mat (shiny side up). Place the peel-offs upside down on the release sheet (sticky side up) and place your white cardstock with the Double Sided Adhesive Sheet applied to it on top (This will pick up the stickers onto the adhesive.) Turn over, remove the release sheet and cover adhesive and peel-offs with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter. Polish with your finger. Brush off the excess glitter; return it to the jar for other projects.

DSCF4485_2

8. Use your Copic or other alcohol markers to color the glittered peel-offs. Fussy cut around the peel-offs. Els has a wonderful video demonstrating this technique on YouTube: Silk Microfine Glitter – Coloring with Alcohol Markers. Once blending (darker to lighter color) is complete, use a white pen to add spots to the fawn.

DSCF4492_2

9. The photo below will show you all of the pieces for our scene.

DSCF4490_2

10. Using the blue cardstock as base, adhere the green die cut aligning the bottom edges, add the additional pine trees. Also aligning the bottom edges, adhere the brown die cut next. Adhere the tree as the next layer, trim off overhanging branches.

DSCF4491_2

11. Using foam adhesive for dimension, adhere the deer family as shown in the project photo.

DSCF4496_2

12. Decorate the tree with the green leaves and Blue Glitter Flowers. Add the clouds. Using a silver glitter pen, outline the layers with ‘stitching’. Place inside frame, hang and enjoy for many years to come.

Thank you for following my tutorial. I hope you enjoyed reading it  as much as I did creating it. And most of all I hope that it will inspire you to make a framed project of your own.

Hugs, Rita
