Hi, It’s Sandy Diller here today to share a project with you that is all about using what you already own in a creative way. I just love Els’s new patterned cardstock “Through the Lens”, and I’m always on the lookout for ways to use it. Our grandson is graduating from High School in June and I wanted a way to display his photo that honors the occasion. I found an unfinished wooden frame in my stash that I decided to use.
1. This frame is 8″ X 8″ and the paper is 6″ X 6″ so here is how that little problem was solved. It took only 2 pieces of paper to do the trick.
2. From Die #967 Alphabet 1 – Caps
- Cut the words “class of”, once in red and once in black
From Die #968 Numbers & More 1
- Cut 2016, once in red and once in black
From Die #1126 Chains 1
- Cut 2 lengths of chain
From Die #1124 Corners
- Cut 4 corners
From “Through the Lens” – Wood TTL003, select 2 pieces of the same paper. Cut in strips, 10 – 1″ X 6 ” and 4 – 1/2″ X 6″, being careful to have the wood grain going the same direction.
3. Using Distress Ink and a color blender, edge each piece. Vintage Photo was used here.
4. Other supplies needed:
One large black brad – if you don’t have black, paint one that is the correct size.
An e-cutter was used for the graduation cap using free clipart on-line. A template has been provided below with measurements. Cut the two pieces from black cardstock.
5. From chipboard cut one cap top – slightly smaller than the black one.
Golden’s Matte Medium was used for the glue on this project. Remove glass from frame and set aside. Because this frame is made of MDF and is very porous, it was first coated with matte medium and set aside to dry. Drying time will very but it doesn’t take too long.
6. When the frame is dry, begin adding paper. Stager the ends and then miter each corner while medium is still wet and remove excess pieces as shown above.
7. Continue same method until all sides are covered.
8. Turn entire frame over and trim off any excess paper.
9. Clean all edges and sand slightly and then edge with Distress Ink.
10. Glue all letters and numbers together with black on the bottom – leaving a small shadow.
11. Add corners, chain and lettering to frame
12. Glue chipboard piece to back of cap top. Make hole for brand in center – add brad and tassel. Glue top piece to hat. Return glass, insert photo and backing.
13. Attach hat to frame using hot glue or a strong glue.
