Wildflowers

August 16, 2017

Hello to all you wonderful craft-loving friends.  Today is my turn to post on Elizabeth Craft Designs blog with a design for Susan’s Garden Design Team.

The card I created features the wildflowers that grow right here in Maine.  The flowers are arranged in Susan’s Garden Notes Pottery Pitcher, a die that is made to look like an old enamel pitcher.  I love having the actual flowers to look at as I create them in paper.  Most of the wildflowers are found growing either in my field or along the roadside as I drive into town.  The one I could not find was the blue chicory.  I had my husband driving around to find some, but we were a few days too early and by the time I was ready to create the chicory they were in bloom.

Here is how the card was created.

  1. Create all your flowers 1 – Day Lily, 2 – Black Eyed Susans (using 1 set of petals from Garden Notes Gerbera Daisy die set),  1 – Queen Anne’s Lace and 1- Chickory created by using stem from CountryScapes Mini Botanical – Hollyhock and petals from Garden Notes Aster.  From green cardstock cut a few leaves and stems for each flower.  Use colored cardstock for each flower shading with Susan’s Garden PanPastels set 1, shape using Susan’s Garden 4 pc. Tool Set, Molding Mat, and Leaf Mat. Then use Kids Choice Glue to assemble each flower.
  2. Card base is 5″ X 7″ .  Cut cardstock (Soft Finish Cardstock – Spring Green used here)  10″ X 7″; score at 5″ and fold in half.
  3. From White Soft Finish Cardstock die cut largest Stitched Rectangles.  Adhere to card front (centering) using Clear Double Sided Adhesive.
  4.  Using Elizabeth Craft Designs Watercolor Paper and Distress Oxide Re-Inkers, create backhtound for pitcher of flowers.  Put a few drops of 3 different colors on a non-stick craft mat. Choose colors that coordinate with the card base.  Shohwn: Iced Spruce, Peeled Paint and Spiced Marmalade. Spritz mat with water. Pat the right side of watercolor paper into the ink to pick up the color. Repeat, moving the paper, until it is covered and to your liking. Air dry or use a heat tool for faster drying time.  Cut piece 4″ X 5-1/4″ adhere to card front using Clear Double Sided Adhesive.
  5. Cut 1 Garden Notes Pottery Pitcher from White Soft Finish Cardstock.  Use a black marker to color the handle and the narrow edge on the rim.  Lay face down on molding mat and use large ball tool from Susan’s 4 pc. Tool Set to rub all over back of the pitcher to round it and give it realistic dimension.  Adhere to card front using Kids Choice Glue applied with tooth pick to just edges on bottom and both sides leaving top open to insert flowers.
  6. Arrange flowers as a bouquet in the pitcher as shown or as you prefer. Adhere flowers with Kids Choice Glue. Tuck in and glue the leaves after the flowers.

I hope that this tutorial has inspired you to make your own card.  I believe this card would brighten anyone’s day.  Be sure to visit Elizabeth craft Designs to see all their great products.

Christine- what a beautiful creation! I was in Maine last September (my son married a Maine girl). I have photos of some of the beautiful flowers growing around Pemaquid Point lighthouse. They are very different from our wildflowers here in south Texas! It was so refreshing to enjoy the cool Maine weather, when Texas is still in the grips of HOT summer in September! My husband and I will be coming back to Maine this October to see our son and new daughter, and I am looking forward to seeing some fall foliage, as well.
Thank you for sharing your beauty, and refreshing my memories of a wonderful time in Maine.

Oh Devy I am so glad that it brought back great memories of Maine. Maine is a beautiful state. I leave about 1-1/2 hours north of Pemaquid – Pemaquid is a beautiful place.
