Butterfly Art Journal Page

April 27, 2021

Hi there,

It’s Tanja here and today I would like to show you how to create this Butterfly Art Journal Page:

Step 1: Creating the Background

  • apply Embossing Paste through the Waves stencil on a piece of watercolor paper and let this layer dry thoroughly
  • add color using pinks from the Watercolor Palette
  • ink up the edges with Distress Ink Black Soot and add some splatters with watered-down black acrylic ink

Step 2: Creating the Butterfly

  • roll a piece of purple tissue paper for the butterfly’s body
  • add little antennas – I used ready-made stamen that you would normally use for flower centers
  • cut out two wings from vellum using a die from the Butterfly Pocket Insert set
  • color the vellum with a light teal Alcohol Marker
  • assemble the butterfly using hot glue
  • add a pre-made sentiment

I hope you got inspired.

A Way With Words

Paper Hugs

January 9, 2021

Have you sent more cards in 2020 than in previous years? I definitely have – and I think it is something that should continue. So I am making some generic cards to be sent anytime – I thought the Paper Hugs sentiment is perfect just to send out for any reason.

This is a fairly straight-forward card and easy to mass produce. I started with a white card base and inked it up with some Distress Oxides. I used analogous colors (colors next to each other on the color wheel) to make blending easier. Splatter with water and then soak up with a clean paper towel. I used a die cut out in the white corner with a die from the Butterfly Insert .

The Butterfly Insert comes with some funky letters that I thought contrasted nicely with the elegant calligraphy of the A Way with Words Hugs lettering. Both the butterfly front wing and the shadow to the word Hugs was cut out of pale blue foil.

Because I get bored easily, I do like to make variations when I mass produce a card. So here is another one with different colors and using the word “free” instead of “paper”.

Thank you so much for looking and I hope you had a crafty start to the New Year!

The World needs who you were made to be

September 22, 2020

Hi there,

It’s Tanja here and today I would like to show you a Mixed Media Art Journal Project. But first I would like to introduce you to some of the different pages you can create with the help of the dies from the Summer Journal Special.

Possibility 1:

  • cut out the double page with the die on the left, cut off one of the flaps and stitch it together
  • I use this to store my cut outs from the Summer Journal Special

Possibility 2:

  • cut out the double page with the die on the left and the pocket on the bottom right
  • cut off the flap on the left
  • you end up with one normal page on the left and a pocket on the right

Possibility 3:

  • cut out the double page with the die on the left
  • cut off the flaps
  • add the half pocket cut out with the die n the top left
  • you can use this to store your stencils from the Summer Journal Special or a tag

In the following step by step tutorial I am going to create a mixed media tag and decorate the half pocket:

Step 1: Die Cutting

  • since I already showed you how to create the half pocket, I only need to die cut the tag from watercolor paper with the help of the die from the Butterfly Pocket Insert die set

Step 2: Adding Texture

  • adhere some torn tissue paper to the tag with multi medium
  • apply Grit Paste through one of the stencils from the Summer Journal Special and let this dry or heat-it with your heat tool for even more texture

Step 3: Adding Color

  • add color by smooshing the tag into watered-down Distress Paint (Cracked Pistachio, Salty Ocean, Peacock Feathers)

Step 4: Finishing Touches

  • ink up the edges of the tag with Distress Ink Hickory Smoke
  • dye four strands of torn seam binding with Distress Stains Peacock Feathers and thread them through the hole of the tag
  • cut out one of the poppies from the Floral Insert die set from grey cardstock
  • add a pre-cut sentiment

Step 5: Decorating the Pocket

  • apply Distress Ink Hickory Smoke through one of the stencils from the Summer Journal Special
  • stamp one of the definitions from the Journal Words set with Versafine Clair Nocturne
  • stamp some single words from that same set and with that same ink – use up to fifth generation stamping to let it fade out

I hope you got inspired.
