Sweet Fun

April 6, 2017

Hi everyone,

It’s my turn to post a tutorial for the Die Cut Design Team. I love making cards that are a little different from the normal square or rectangular cards. Today I have used the Fishtail Borders die set from Els van de Burgt Studio to add a fishtail edge to my card. To decorate my card I used dies from Joset Designs and A Way With Words.

Here is how I created my card:

Step 1 –

Cut a piece of Pink Peach Soft Finish Cardstock that measures 4 1/2 inches x 11 1/2 inches. Score along the 11 1/2 inch edge at 5 3/4 inches.

  • Find the center of the card (I used a centering ruler see photo above). Place the scallop fishtail border from the Fishtail Borders die set so that the point of the die is at the center point and the tails of the die are even at the edges. Run through die cutting machine.
  • Save the negative die cut piece (the piece that is removed from the card) to use later for the inside of the card.
  • Cut a piece of designer paper that measures 4 1/4 inches x 5 1/2 inches.

  • Find the center of the designer paper, same as for the folded card. Place the Stitched Fishtail Border from the Fishtail Borders die set so that the point of  the die is at the center point and the tails of the die are even at the edges. Run through die cutting machine.
  • Save the negative die cut piece (the piece that is removed from the card) to use later for the inside of the card.

  • Adhere the designer paper fishtail layer to the folded card.

Step 2 –

Using the second smallest oval die from the Stitched Ovals set, cut an oval from White Soft Finish Cardstock.
  • Using the third smallest oval die from the Dotted Scallop Ovals set, cut an oval from Pink Peach Soft Finish Cardstock.
  • Layer the two ovals together and adhere to the center of the card using foam tape to add dimension.

Step 3 –
Using the Apron die set cut the following:
  • (1) Apron from designer paper
  • (1) Apron Pocket from coordinating designer paper
  • (1) each of the Scallop Apron Trim pieces from Rosebud Soft Finish Cardstock
  • (1) each Apron Ribbons from Pink Peach Soft Finish Cardstock
  • Assemble the Apron using photo above as a guide.
  • Adhere to the oval using foam tape.
  • Add a Pink/Silver Glitter Dots Peel Off Sticker to the heart on the apron pocket.
Step 4 –
Using the Kitchen Tools die set cut the following:
  • (1) Bowl from White Soft Finish Cardstock
  • (1) Each Rolling Pin, Spatula & Whisk from White Soft Finish Cardstock
  • (1) Heart from White Soft Finish Cardstock
  • Color Kitchen Tools using Copic Markers.
  • Cut a slit in the bowl and add Spatula to bowl.
  • Add Kitchen Tools to card referring to photo above as a guide.

Step 5 –

Die cut two each of the following from White Soft Finish Cardstock: The word “Sweet” from the A Way with Words – Sweet Smiles die set; the word “Fun” from the A Way with Words – Fun Play die set. Layer and glue the pieces together for added dimension and stability.

  • Adhere the sentiments to the card, referring to the photo above as a guide.
  • Using the two smaller fishtail banners from the ModaScrap Stitched Fishtail Banners die set, die cut one each from Pink Peach and Rosebud Soft Finish Cardstock.
  • Offset the the smallest fishtail banner over the larger fishtail banner and adhere to the top right hand edge of the card.

Step 6 – Inside of the Card

Layer the negative die cut pieces that were left over from earlier steps. Layer and adher to the left side.

  • Using black ink, stamp “You’re so sweet” from the General Sentiments die set onto Pink Peach Soft Finish Cardstock.
  • Die cut the sentiment using the smallest oval die from the Dotted Scallop Ovals set. Adhere to the inside of the card so it is centered between the fishtails on either end of the card.
Step 7 –
Using the Kitchen Tools die set cut the following:
  • (1) Bowl from White Soft Finish Cardstock
  • (1) Each Rolling Pin, Spatula & Whisk from White Soft Finish Cardstock
  • (1) Heart from White Soft Finish Cardstock
  • (1) Kitchen Mitt from designer paper
  • Color Kitchen Tools using Copic Markers.
  • Cut a slit in the bowl and add Spatula to bowl.
  • Add Kitchen Tools to card, referring to photo above as a guide.

This reminds me of my mother and grandmothers–and my dad, but his was a dark brown. My grandmothers had there’s on from sunup to bedtime. Mom had hers on less, but both she and dad always wore them at meals. Thanks for the beautiful memories. The card is so creative.

Great idea to use the ‘scrap’ piece on inside of card. Like the apron too.

Hi Frances, I really love this card, I would never have thought to make a fishtail card like this but it really is so effective, especially with the scalloped border, and I adore the pretty apron, I love this !!
Lots of love from Patricia xx
